Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSometimes—but a free VPS is not automatically a free or dependable way to stream around the clock. You must keep compute, storage, outbound data transfer, and any other billable resources within the provider’s free allowance. For a continuous video stream, outbound transfer is often the obstacle: even a 3 Mbps stream sends about 0.97 TB over 30 days, while Google Cloud’s published free allowance includes just 1 GB per month of outbound transfer for its eligible free VM.
Oracle documents a larger Always Free compute allowance, but its capacity, region, and idle-instance rules still make uninterrupted operation uncertain. If the channel must stay live, budget for a paid VPS or consider a cloud service built for continuous streaming rather than relying on a free-tier promise.
What “free” means for a 24/7 stream
A VPS can run a YouTube stream without additional compute charges only if every billable resource stays within the applicable free limits. Check the VM, disk, outbound transfer, and any other resources in use; exceeding an allowance on a paid billing account can result in charges. A free trial credit is different from an ongoing free tier, and neither by itself guarantees uninterrupted service.
The VPS sends the encoded stream out to YouTube continuously. That makes outbound transfer a critical part of the calculation, not a minor add-on. You also need enough compute capacity to encode the video in real time, and the provider must keep the VM available. The official plan limits below describe allowances and policies, not independent uptime or performance measurements.

What Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud include
The following figures are from the providers’ current documentation; terms, account eligibility, and availability can change. Check the linked pages and your billing console before deploying.
| Provider and offer | Documented allowance or condition | What it means for a continuous stream |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Free Tier | One non-preemptible e2-micro VM per month in one of three US regions—Oregon, Iowa, or South Carolina—plus 30 GB-months of standard persistent disk and 1 GB per month of outbound data transfer from North America to specified destinations. Eligible VM hours are limited by the hours in the calendar month. Google Cloud Free Tier documentation | The documented 1 GB monthly outbound allowance is far below what even a low-bitrate continuous video stream needs. Use beyond included limits on a paid billing account is billed. The Free Trial is temporary; resources stop if the account closes without an upgrade. |
| Oracle Cloud Always Free | Up to two E2.1.Micro VMs, or an Ampere A1 Flex allowance of 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month—equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory for Always Free accounts. Resources must be created in the tenancy’s home region. Oracle Always Free resources documentation | More documented compute does not establish that a particular workload will encode successfully or that an instance will remain available. Free shapes may be temporarily out of host capacity. Oracle may reclaim an idle Always Free instance under its documented utilization criteria. |
| Oracle Free Tier promotional credit | Oracle describes a $300 promotional credit for 30 days, separate from Always Free resources. Oracle says Always Free resources continue after the trial period subject to their limitations, and permits one free trial or Always Free account per person. Oracle Free Tier offer | Promotional credit is temporary trial credit, not a recurring monthly free allowance. |
Oracle’s documented idle-instance reclamation criteria apply over a seven-day period: 95th-percentile CPU utilization below 20%, network utilization below 20%, and, for A1 shapes, memory utilization below 20%. Oracle states: “Idle Always Free compute instances may be reclaimed by Oracle.” Meeting a compute allowance therefore does not make the service equivalent to a guaranteed always-on host.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube livestream use?
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. The table estimates transfer over 30 days at a constant bitrate, using bitrate multiplied by time and decimal units:

| Example bitrate | Approximate data sent in 30 days |
|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | 0.97 TB |
| 8 Mbps | 2.59 TB |
| 14 Mbps | 4.54 TB |
These are calculations, not transfer figures published by YouTube or the cloud providers. They omit protocol overhead and bitrate variation, so actual transfer can be higher. Even the 480p example greatly exceeds Google Cloud’s documented 1 GB monthly free outbound allowance. YouTube’s recommendations are available in its live encoder settings guidance.

Can I livestream to YouTube from a free VPS?
Possibly, if the provider makes a suitable VM available to your account and region, the VM can encode your chosen video in real time, and the service’s transfer and other limits fit your use. The official free-tier terms do not establish that a particular VM has enough CPU, compatible architecture, host capacity, or uptime for a given encoder and video. Test your exact configuration before depending on it.
YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its guidance recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs, with up to 60 fps. Follow the current settings shown in YouTube Studio for your stream; its ingest recommendations do not certify a VPS’s encoding capacity or availability.

Test the whole path before relying on it
- Confirm the VM’s architecture and available compute can handle your encoder and chosen resolution in real time.
- Measure sustained outbound capacity from the VM and check how the provider accounts for transfer in your region and account.
- Use a representative test stream with similar audio and movement to the intended video. YouTube recommends a speed test and a test stream.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test, and verify that the VPS can recover from a process or connection interruption.
- Review billing and resource usage after the test, including disk and outbound transfer, rather than assuming the free-tier label covers every resource.
Will a free cloud VM stay online all the time?
No free-tier allowance, by itself, proves that a VM will stay online continuously. Google’s free VM offer is bounded by eligible monthly hours and its account terms; Oracle warns that free shapes can lack host capacity and documents idle-instance reclamation. A VM can also fail to meet the stream’s encoding needs even when its usage remains within the free allocation. The reviewed provider documentation does not establish uninterrupted 24/7 availability for either offer.
When a free tier is a reasonable experiment
- You are learning how VPS encoding and YouTube ingest work, and an interruption is acceptable.
- You can test the specific VM, region, encoder, and outbound network path before depending on them.
- You have alerts or a recovery plan and can absorb any charge if usage exceeds an allowance on your account.
When to choose a paid or hosted option
If an outage would defeat the purpose of the channel, compare a paid VPS with a hosted streaming service. Evaluate total monthly cost after any trial credit, included outbound transfer and overage billing, CPU architecture and real-time encoding support, reclamation and availability policies, region and ingest latency, restart and monitoring controls, and whether it supports your specific workflow. The reviewed official pages do not provide an apples-to-apples cost comparison, so check the current terms for the configuration you would actually use.

Common problems and what to check
- The VPS is free, but the stream incurs transfer charges: Compare the encoder bitrate and run time with the provider’s outbound-transfer allowance and billing rules. Continuous video can send hundreds of gigabytes or several terabytes in a month.
- The encoder cannot keep up: Check CPU load, architecture compatibility, encoder settings, and whether frames are being dropped. Reduce the workload or use a VM that can encode the chosen output reliably; free-tier eligibility alone says nothing about real-time encoding performance.
- The instance cannot be created: Check region and account eligibility. Oracle requires Always Free resources to be created in the home region and notes that free shapes can be temporarily out of capacity.
- An Oracle Always Free VM disappears: Review the documented seven-day idle-instance reclamation thresholds and your utilization. Do not rely on a low-use instance as guaranteed permanent hosting.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems: Check the ingest URL and stream configuration, use the recommended constant bitrate and keyframe interval, test with representative content, and monitor YouTube’s health messages.
- A supposedly free resource produces a bill: Review actual resource usage and the account’s billing console against the provider’s current free limits. Trial credits, free-tier allowances, and resources beyond those limits are not interchangeable.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
A technically healthy stream is not automatically permitted content. Before looping a recording, make sure you have the rights needed to stream its video and audio, and review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization. Reusing content or running a continuous loop does not itself establish that the material is original, licensed, or eligible for monetization. You can use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist to review rights questions before going live.
