A media player has to interpret a video file, and a crafted file can exploit a flaw in that parsing code. Keep the player and operating system updated, use files from sources you trust, and take security warnings seriously. Those steps lower risk; they cannot certify an unknown download as safe.
Can a video file contain malware?
A video file can be crafted to target the software that opens or processes it. That does not mean every downloaded video is dangerous, or that every player is vulnerable; risk depends on the file, the player’s code and version, and the operating system.
For a concrete example, VideoLAN’s September 2026 VLC 3.0.24 security bulletin describes issues that crafted files or streams could trigger while opening, pre-parsing metadata, or processing playlists. The bulletin says the issues could cause crashes and memory disclosure with the user’s privileges, and that code execution was demonstrated on macOS under specific conditions. These findings concern the affected VLC versions and stated conditions; they do not establish that every media player, platform, or video file has the same risk.
Is it safe to open a downloaded MP4?
The MP4 extension alone cannot tell you whether a file is trustworthy or harmless. Microsoft explains that changing a filename extension does not convert the file’s underlying content. Check that the file came from the person or service you expected, and be cautious if its type or context is unexpected. Microsoft’s advice for downloads also includes scanning files with antivirus software and avoiding unexpected files from unknown senders. A scan is a useful layer, not a guarantee.

On Windows, Attachment Manager uses Mark of the Web information to decide whether to warn about or block some downloaded files. Treat a warning as a reason to verify the file’s source, not as an obstacle to bypass reflexively. Microsoft Support’s instruction is: “Only unblock files from trusted sources.” Do not disable protection just to make an unknown file play.
Can VLC play a malicious video?
VLC can be exposed to a crafted file if the installed version is affected by a relevant vulnerability. In its September 2026 bulletin, VideoLAN identifies VLC 3.0.23 and earlier as affected by the issues it describes and VLC 3.0.24 as the fix. The official Windows download page lists version 3.0.24. Versions and fixes can change, so check VideoLAN’s current security information and download listing when you update.

The bulletin says VLC 3.0.24 fixes over 50 issues in VLC itself. It also reports that updated bundled libraries, including FFmpeg, GnuTLS, libxml2, and libpng, include fixes for at least 74 publicly documented vulnerabilities. That figure concerns vulnerabilities in the bundled libraries; it is not a count of VLC vulnerabilities.
How to reduce the risk before playing a download
- Update the player and operating system. Use their normal official update channels. If you use VLC on Windows, compare your installed version with VideoLAN’s current official listing.
- Install players from the publisher. For VLC, use VideoLAN’s official download page rather than a repackaged installer site.
- Check the file’s provenance and context. Confirm who supplied it and that it is the file you expected. Avoid unexpected attachments and downloads from unknown senders.
- Leave antivirus protection enabled. Microsoft says Defender scans opened or downloaded files by default when real-time protection is operating. Files opened or downloaded while real-time protection is off will not be scanned during that time; a scan also cannot certify a file as safe.
- Heed operating-system warnings. Verify the source before considering an unblock action. Do not unblock a file merely because you want to open it.
- Show full filename extensions if they are hidden. This can help you notice a misleading name, but an extension is only a label: renaming a file does not change its contents.
VideoLAN advises users who cannot yet upgrade to refrain from opening files or streams from untrusted sources. If you cannot update VLC and do not trust the file’s source, wait rather than opening it.

What to check when choosing or comparing players
Popularity or format support alone does not show that a player is safer. Compare the support and update practices that affect your actual setup:
- Is the player still supported and receiving updates from its vendor?
- Does the vendor publish security fixes and guidance?
- Does your installed version include the relevant fixes?
- Did you obtain the installer from the publisher’s official source?
- Is your operating system still receiving security updates?
These checks help you judge whether known issues are being addressed and whether you have the fixes installed. They do not predict how often malicious videos occur; the cited official guidance does not establish a prevalence rate.
