Yes, but only after the encoder or cloud service sending your feed is updated with the replacement stream key and reconnects. YouTube’s instructions say to copy the new key and update your encoder software. They do not guarantee that a third-party service will detect a reset, restart automatically, or keep the same broadcast and watch page running. Check your provider’s recovery instructions and verify the stream in YouTube after reconnecting.
What a YouTube stream key reset changes
A stream key is a credential used with YouTube’s Live server URL to send a feed from an encoder. YouTube describes keys as information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. When you reset a key, the old credential is replaced. The source transmitting the feed must use the new one.
YouTube’s documented recovery is to copy the replacement key and update the encoder software. That instruction applies whether the source is a local encoder or a service that sends the feed for you. It does not establish whether a particular cloud provider can refresh a saved key without stopping a job or whether the same broadcast session will continue. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
How to restore the stream
- Check YouTube’s status. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and identify the affected stream. Note its health or status message and whether the viewer-facing watch page is still live.
- Copy the replacement key. Retrieve the new key from Live Control Room. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers cannot.
- Update the system that actually sends the feed. For a local encoder, replace the saved key in its stream settings. For a cloud relay, update the credential in that service’s saved configuration. If you use a backup encoder or a second saved configuration, update those too. Gyre specifically advises updating replacement keys wherever they were saved, including backup configurations; that is Gyre’s guidance, not a universal promise about all providers. - Reconnect or restart the sender if needed. Follow the provider’s steps to restart the encoder or streaming job. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to retrieve the key from Live Control Room, paste it into the encoder, and start the encoder when a stream will not start. If the software signs in to YouTube without using a stream key, YouTube directs users to contact that software provider’s support team. YouTube Help: Troubleshooting live stream errors
- Confirm the recovery from YouTube’s side. Check that YouTube receives the feed and shows a healthy preview, then open the public watch page to confirm it is live. A provider dashboard saying “running” does not by itself prove that viewers can see the stream.
Why automatic recovery depends on the provider
YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to update the sending encoder; they do not specify how an unnamed third-party cloud service stores or refreshes credentials, restarts a job, or handles an in-progress broadcast after a reset. Do not assume a service will adopt the new key automatically. Check its documentation or ask its support team whether you must replace the saved key, restart the job, or create a new broadcast.

There are different provider workflows. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous streams of prerecorded video. Gyre describes both manual stream-key entry and a channel-authorization workflow that creates broadcasts through API authorization. If you use authorization rather than a manually entered key, follow that provider’s authorization and error-handling instructions. A reset also does not guarantee that the existing broadcast or viewer session will remain intact. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive rule is not a continuity guarantee for a 24/7 stream. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder

Prevent problems and verify your setup
- Know where credentials are saved. Record which primary and backup encoders or cloud configurations use the key so you can update each relevant sender after a reset.
- Test the whole path. YouTube recommends testing the setup and checking that the player rolls over to a backup encoder during failover testing. This helps reveal a broken backup path but does not eliminate the need to update a replaced key.
- Leave network headroom. YouTube recommends upload-bandwidth headroom and notes that network disruption can break a stream. A stable connection cannot make an invalid old key work, but it can help distinguish credential problems from transmission problems.
- Check both status and playback. After reconnecting, review YouTube’s stream health and the public watch page rather than relying only on the sender’s dashboard. YouTube live-streaming tips and troubleshooting
If you are choosing a 24/7 streaming setup
Before relying on any provider, ask how it handles a replaced key: whether you can refresh credentials without stopping the job, whether it documents restart and backup behavior, what support can do during an interruption, and how to confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed. The general YouTube instructions do not answer those provider-specific questions.
