Yes—but a 720p source file alone does not reduce the bandwidth a 24/7 YouTube stream uses. The important setting is the bitrate sent by your encoder. YouTube’s current recommended live bitrate for 720p is 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 8 Mbps with H.264, at either 30 or 60 fps. To use less upload bandwidth, configure a lower suitable live bitrate and test the resulting picture—not just the resolution of the file you play.
What determines bandwidth in a 24/7 stream?
A video file is the content source; an encoder converts that source into a continuous digital feed for YouTube. As YouTube Help explains, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The file’s original bitrate is not automatically the bitrate of the live feed. The encoder’s output settings determine the outgoing live bitrate and therefore the stream’s approximate continuous upload use. YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into playback formats for viewers. That means your upload rate is not the same as the download rate each viewer uses, and a creator’s lower ingest bitrate does not dictate one identical playback quality for everyone. The same recommended rate is listed for 30 and 60 fps, while the rate differs by codec. These are recommendations, not guarantees of identical picture quality: motion, visual detail, audio, and encoder behavior affect the result. Test with representative footage and the codec you plan to use. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs and RTMP/RTMPS among its live protocols. Live-stream bitrate is not video-file upload bitrate
If you upload a video to YouTube as a file, YouTube’s separate recommended encoding rates for 720p are 5 Mbps for standard-frame-rate video and 7.5 Mbps for high-frame-rate video. Those figures are for uploaded videos, not the live feed from an encoder. Do not use the file-upload table as a substitute for the live ingest recommendations above. Estimate continuous upload use
At a stable bitrate, data transferred is approximately bitrate multiplied by time. For a rough estimate, 6 Mbps sustained for 24 hours is about 64.8 GB of video data, and 8 Mbps is about 86.4 GB, using decimal gigabytes and excluding audio variation, protocol overhead, retries, and any backup feed. These are calculations from the listed bitrates, not YouTube-reported monthly usage figures. Actual use can differ when bitrate varies or the stream is interrupted and reconnects.
To estimate a real change, compare the live bitrate you currently send with the bitrate you plan to send, then multiply the difference by the hours streamed. YouTube’s reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal savings percentage or monthly saving from switching 24/7 streams to 720p files. A 720p stream at a high configured bitrate can use more bandwidth than a higher-resolution stream configured at a lower bitrate; the outgoing bitrate is the relevant comparison.

Set up and verify a lower-bandwidth 720p feed
- Choose an encoder and connection. YouTube supports software and hardware encoder options; dedicated hardware is optional, not a bandwidth-reduction method by itself. The bitrate setting is the lever. Where practical, use Ethernet for a computer-based stream. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; YouTube Help: Filming tips – Live.
- Set the live output to 720p. Select 1280 × 720 and the intended frame rate, then choose the codec and a suitable bitrate. For YouTube’s current recommendations, use 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 8 Mbps for H.264, at 30 or 60 fps. A lower setting may reduce data use further, but may also reduce picture quality; test before relying on it.
- Check real outbound capacity. Measure upload speed under conditions similar to the planned 24/7 operation. Download speed does not show whether the connection can reliably send the feed. YouTube advises leaving bandwidth headroom and identifies about 20% as a useful margin; a connection operating near its full upload capacity is more vulnerable to instability. - Test privately or unlisted before a long run. Start a test stream with the intended source, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and monitor audio and video quality. This reveals whether a seemingly adequate bitrate and connection work with your actual content and setup. What 720p can—and cannot—save
- It can help when it leads to a lower live output bitrate. Less data is sent when the encoder actually sends fewer bits over time.
- It does not guarantee lower use. A 720p source encoded at 8 Mbps still sends roughly an 8 Mbps video feed; a 720p file’s storage bitrate does not set the encoder’s live output automatically.
- It is a quality trade-off, not a universal best setting. Compare codec, frame rate, motion detail, measured upload capacity, stability, and picture quality in a representative test.
- Do not confuse creator upload with viewer playback. YouTube transcodes the live input, so viewers may receive different playback formats from the feed you send.
