For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. CameraFi advises keeping the stream bitrate near 75% of measured upload speed, so those targets imply roughly 10.7 Mbps and 18.7 Mbps of steady upload capacity respectively. Treat those upload figures as calculations from CameraFi’s headroom guidance—not guaranteed thresholds—and test before relying on them.
Recommended bitrate and resolution settings
Use the YouTube H.264 recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you select, but only if your connection can sustain it. A higher resolution cannot compensate for an unstable or undersized upload connection. YouTube’s table applies to H.264; do not use these numbers as AV1 or H.265 recommendations. YouTube’s live encoder settings
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation | Approximate steady upload capacity at CameraFi’s 75% heuristic |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 10.7 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10.7 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 18.7 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 22.7 Mbps |
The upload-capacity figures are simple calculations: divide the recommended bitrate by 0.75. CameraFi’s approximately 75% rule is headroom advice, not an independently published threshold, and neither it nor YouTube can guarantee that a particular phone or network will deliver a clear stream. CameraFi’s guidance is mobile-specific and says to measure upload speed, repeat the test, and allow for fluctuations. CameraFi’s bitrate and resolution guidance
Which setting should you try first?
Start with 720p30 at 8 Mbps if repeated upload checks show the connection can reliably support that rate with headroom. Try 1080p30 at 14 Mbps only when the connection remains stable at the higher target. If those rates are not sustainable, lower the bitrate and/or resolution and test again. Choose the row that matches both your actual frame rate and resolution; 60 fps uses a different YouTube recommendation from 30 fps in some cases.

Why CameraFi Live video can look blurry
Blur or pixelation can result when the selected bitrate exceeds the connection’s steady upload capacity, when upload speed varies, or when the device struggles under load or heat. Resolution by itself does not determine sharpness: the bitrate must carry enough detail for that resolution and the movement in the scene. CameraFi notes that network changes, background apps, device heat and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth interference are factors to check during mobile streaming.
First distinguish persistent pixelation in the stream from a playback-quality selection that is simply set low. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks; if the stream has just started, processing or the selected playback quality may affect what a viewer sees. Check at the highest available playback quality before deciding that the encoder settings are the cause. This possibility does not establish the cause of any particular blurry stream.

Step-by-step troubleshooting in CameraFi Live
- Check playback quality. Open the YouTube live stream and choose its highest available playback quality. Look for persistent pixelation rather than assuming a low-resolution playback selection means CameraFi is sending a poor source.
- Test upload speed where you will stream. Measure upload—not download—speed repeatedly at the location of the broadcast. Note the lowest or most variable results, not just the best reading. CameraFi recommends basing the bitrate on about 75% of measured upload speed to leave headroom.
- Use one network connection at a time. In CameraFi Live, choose either Wi-Fi or mobile data and avoid switching between them during the stream; CameraFi warns that transitions can disconnect a live stream. Prefer the connection that proves more stable in your actual location rather than relying on a blanket rule about one cellular generation being better than another.
- Match the settings to the connection. If you are using H.264, use YouTube’s bitrate row for your selected resolution and frame rate. Begin with 720p30 if capacity is uncertain. Reduce bitrate and/or resolution if repeated upload checks do not leave reliable headroom; test 1080p30 only if the connection handles its higher target consistently.
- Run a representative test stream. Include audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. Fast movement can make compression limits easier to spot, so do not judge quality from a still scene alone. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream-health messages during the event.
- Reduce phone workload and interference. Close background apps and watch for overheating or degraded performance. If you use Bluetooth with Wi-Fi, CameraFi recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi because 2.4 GHz may interfere with Bluetooth.
CameraFi’s advice is general mobile guidance; the available information does not establish a specific CameraFi Live menu path or confirm that every app version and device exposes every encoder control. Use the controls available in your installed version without assuming a particular label or setting.
How to tell whether the adjustment helped
- Compare the same type of scene and movement before and after changing settings.
- Check the stream at its highest available playback quality, and allow for YouTube’s processing when the stream has just begun.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test is running; a still preview alone will not reveal how motion behaves.
- If the picture remains pixelated, reduce the bitrate or resolution and test again rather than raising resolution without checking upload stability.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an uploaded recording or playlist that should loop as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is not a camera-streaming solution and does not replace CameraFi for a live phone camera broadcast. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start a free StreamNeo day.
