A “call center in a box” is an informal name for a bundled contact-center system, typically combining call routing, interactive voice response (IVR), agent tools and reporting. It is not a standard bill of materials: the phrase alone does not tell you which features, hardware or support are included, or whether the service is actually hosted by the vendor.
What “call center in a box” means
The phrase describes a package intended to bring multiple contact-center functions together. It may be software installed on a customer’s premises, a vendor-operated cloud service, or a combination of the two. “In a box” signals integration or packaging—not necessarily a physical appliance or a complete, ready-to-use system.
The wording has appeared in vendor material for years. Cisco used “Contact Center-in-a-Box” for its IPCC Express 4.0 product in 2005, describing features including routing, IVR and remote-agent capabilities (Cisco, 2005). A later Cisco presentation depicted an integrated contact-center application with phones, agent and supervisor tools, routing, IVR, recording and reporting (Cisco, 2008). These are historical examples, not descriptions of current product specifications.

- Telephony and agent tools: connects calls with agent desktops through computer-telephony integration (CTI); CRM or other business-system integrations may also be available.
- Supervision and records: may include call recording, supervisor tools, and real-time or historical reporting.
- Additional channels and workforce features: some packages offer email, web chat, quality management or workforce management, but these are not guaranteed by the label.
Remote-agent support is another capability found in the historical Cisco examples. Its 2008 presentation also described voice on one system with other functions available as integrated options. Neither those examples nor the phrase establish a universal minimum feature set.
What “hosted” means—and what it does not
Ask who owns and operates each part of the system. A vendor may run the service in its cloud, a customer may manage equipment on its own premises, or infrastructure may be split between parties or placed in a colocation facility. The word “hosted” by itself does not settle that distinction. An EDN interview from 2006 documented varying uses of the term, including arrangements where customers still bought equipment. It is useful context for the terminology, not evidence of current provider practices.

A bundled service does not necessarily include everything agents use. Depending on the platform and deployment, the remaining requirements may include PCs, headsets, IP phones, broadband, telephony trunks or other supported devices. Cisco’s historical deployment presentation depicts IP phones and agent stations; it supports asking about endpoint compatibility, not choosing a current phone model.

Why old specifications and advertised prices need care
In its 2008 presentation, Cisco described “1–300 agent” capacity for highly available inbound voice, with actual deployment size dependent on required features. A historical Cisco product guide also described Express as designed for up to 300 agents. These figures refer to old Cisco products and configurations; they are not current Cisco limits or general contact-center sizing benchmarks.
Promero’s page states a starting software fee of $49 per agent per month and setup in hours. These are vendor marketing claims, not a market-wide price or a guaranteed implementation timeline. Confirm current availability, inclusions, setup requirements and total charges directly with the provider.
A separate implementation example is CloudHesive’s 2022 brief, which describes combining Amazon Connect with Amazon WorkSpaces for a work-at-home call center and mentions Salesforce and ServiceNow integrations (CloudHesive, 2022). It demonstrates one possible implementation approach, not current pricing or a claim that the same configuration suits every organization.
