Caleb Williams will miss the Chicago Bears’ Oct. 4, 2026 game against the New York Jets because of a hamstring injury, according to the team’s Oct. 2 update. The Bears had not decided whether Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum would start. That is separate from Chicago’s planned decision to rest Williams in its August preseason opener.
Why is Caleb Williams out?
Williams injured his right hamstring midway through the fourth quarter of Chicago’s Sept. 20 game against Minnesota. On Sept. 21, head coach Ben Johnson called him “week-to-week” and said, “I’m not putting a timeline on this. We’re going to say week-to-week.” The Bears subsequently listed Williams out for the Sept. 28 game against Philadelphia and ruled him out for the Oct. 4 Jets game. The team’s Oct. 2 update is the latest status covered here.
Who will start for the Bears if Williams is out?
As of the Oct. 2 update, Chicago had not named its starter against the Jets. The team said either Bagent or Keenum would start, so neither should be described as the confirmed choice.
What is known about Bagent and Keenum?
The Bears’ Sept. 8 depth chart listed Williams first, Bagent second and Keenum third, but that earlier ordering does not settle the game-specific decision. Johnson described the two backups as having different skill sets and said both were cerebral players. In the quoted comments, he did not specify which quarterback was the more mobile one, so the comparison does not establish a clear advantage for either candidate. The team’s update on the quarterback options leaves the choice open.

Bagent had sustained a concussion late in the Minnesota game, raising availability questions ahead of Philadelphia. The Bears reported that he cleared concussion protocol by Sept. 27 and had no injury designation for the Eagles game. That information concerns the earlier game; it does not establish his medical status for the Jets matchup.
Was Williams benched in the preseason?
No. Chicago’s August decision was a planned workload choice, not a response to the hamstring injury. The Bears held Williams and other starters out of the preseason opener, with Bagent starting. Johnson said he did not need to see Williams in a preseason game because he saw him every day in practice and knew what to expect during the season. The team published his comments on Aug. 13. When will Caleb Williams return?
The cited team updates do not provide a return date. “Week-to-week” was Johnson’s Sept. 21 description, not a confirmed timetable, and Williams was later ruled out for the Jets game. No specific recovery estimate is established by the team reporting cited here.
