Caesars Entertainment said an attacker obtained a copy of its loyalty-program database after using social engineering against an outsourced IT support vendor. The company’s September 14, 2023 SEC filing said the copied database included driver’s-license numbers and/or Social Security numbers for a significant number of members. Caesars did not confirm an attacker’s identity or a ransom payment in that filing.
What happened in the Caesars cyberattack?
Caesars said its investigation determined on September 7, 2023, that an unauthorized actor had acquired a copy of its loyalty-program database. In a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on September 14, the company said the actor gained network access through social engineering involving an outsourced IT support vendor. The filing does not identify the vendor or explain the precise method used.
Caesars activated incident response and containment measures, engaged outside cybersecurity professionals, notified law enforcement and state gaming regulators, and said it was investigating whether other information was included in the acquired files. The company’s filing is the primary source for the incident details: Caesars’ September 14, 2023 Form 8-K.
What information did the stolen database contain?
Caesars said the database included driver’s-license numbers and/or Social Security numbers for a “significant number” of loyalty-program members. The company did not give an exact count of affected people or records, and it said its investigation into other information in the files was continuing.

At the time of the filing, Caesars said it had no evidence that member passwords or PINs, bank-account information, or payment-card information had been acquired. That describes what the company knew at that time; it is not proof that those data types could never have been involved.
The Associated Press reported in September 2023 that Caesars Rewards had more than 65 million members. That was the program’s total membership, not a confirmed count of people whose records were copied. The AP’s contemporaneous report also covered the separate MGM Resorts incident.

Were Caesars casinos and gaming apps disrupted?
Caesars said its physical properties and its online and mobile gaming applications continued without disruption. The company stated in its filing: “Our customer-facing operations, including our physical properties and our online and mobile gaming applications, have not been impacted by this incident and continue without disruption.” This is Caesars’ account of operational impact, not an independent guarantee about every system or subsequent event.
Did Caesars pay a ransom, and who was responsible?
Caesars’ SEC filing does not name the attacker, say that a ransom was paid, or disclose a ransom amount. Reports at the time attributed the attack to the group known as Scattered Spider and described a possible ransom payment, but those details were not confirmed by Caesars in its filing.

BleepingComputer reported a roughly $15 million payment against an initial $30 million demand, citing other reporting. Treat those figures and the attribution as media reports, not company-confirmed facts. BleepingComputer’s September 14, 2023 report describes the reported payment.
What did Caesars do for affected members?
Caesars said it offered credit monitoring and identity-theft protection to all loyalty-program members and planned to notify affected people in line with its legal obligations. This was the offer described in the 2023 filing; its current availability and terms are not established here. Members seeking assistance should use Caesars’ official channels to check whether any protection or support remains available, rather than assume the historical offer is still active.

The company also said it took steps intended to have the actor delete the stolen data, while acknowledging it could not guarantee deletion. At disclosure, Caesars said it had seen no evidence that the data had been shared further, published, or misused. Those statements report what Caesars had observed then; they do not establish that deletion occurred or rule out later misuse.

Caesars’ fiscal 2025 Form 10-K continued to discuss the incident. The company said it still could not assure that the data had been deleted, described numerous putative class actions and state regulator inquiries, and said it had received and continued to pursue insurance reimbursements. Caesars said it could not estimate potential losses from the proceedings, but assessed that the incident had not materially affected and was not expected to materially affect its operations or financial condition. These are the company’s assessments in its fiscal 2025 annual filing.
