The system addresses one specific situation: a laptop is taken while you are connected to it and the BusKill app is armed.
What is BusKill, and how does it work?
BusKill combines a USB cable with a magnetic breakaway and software that monitors the connection. You attach one end to the computer and keep the other attached to yourself. If you and the laptop are separated, the breakaway disconnects; the armed app detects the USB disconnection and runs its configured action. The project describes the setup as a hardware dead-man switch. BusKill FAQ
It is not a general anti-theft alarm. It depends on the cable being connected, attached to you, and monitored by the app. It cannot trigger if the separation does not cause the monitored disconnection, and it does not guarantee protection against every way a laptop can be stolen or attacked.
What can BusKill do when the cable disconnects?
The project documents screen locking and shutdown as the ordinary app actions. Its app repository lists Linux, Windows, and macOS support; exact setup and behavior depend on the platform. BusKill app repository

The project also describes optional auxiliary actions for advanced users. Do not assume that every such action works across all supported operating systems: the documented LUKS-header-wipe example is for Linux or QubesOS.
Does “self-destruct” destroy the laptop?
No. The phrase refers to optional destruction of data or encryption material, not physical damage to the computer. BusKill’s FAQ says the hardware is not destroyed. On a machine using full-disk encryption, a destructive sequence may make the stored data unusable by destroying information needed to unlock it. BusKill FAQ

Destructive triggers are not included in the app by default. The project says they are intentionally difficult to configure, and its documentation warns that the example instructions can corrupt or permanently delete data. BusKill destructive-trigger guide Unless you deliberately understand and test the consequences, use a lock or shutdown action instead. Keep independent backups of important files; a trigger that destroys data is not a substitute for a recovery plan.
What do you need to set up BusKill?
- A BusKill cable with its magnetic breakaway, physically connected to the laptop and attached to you.
- The BusKill app installed or launched for your operating system. The project provides a portable software guide with platform-specific instructions for Linux, Windows, and macOS. BusKill software guide
- A chosen action and a clear understanding of how to arm and disarm the app before you move away from the computer.

Can BusKill trigger by accident?
Yes. The magnetic breakaway is meant to separate, so an unintended cable separation can trigger the armed action. The project says the design reduces but does not eliminate false positives; it recommends getting comfortable with arming and disarming, using a sturdy table and chair, avoiding laptop movement while armed, and starting with a lock-screen action. BusKill is aimed at a narrow threat: someone takes a laptop while its user is connected and logged in. It adds a physical-separation trigger, but does not replace full-disk encryption, strong authentication, backups, or ordinary physical security. The project itself acknowledges that unrestricted physical access can defeat many defenses and that malicious hardware or software insertion during shipping is a concern. Open-source designs may make inspection and verification possible, but do not by themselves prove that a particular shipped unit is genuine or unmodified. BusKill FAQ

BusKill favors a wired trigger rather than radio-based proximity detection. The project argues that wireless systems bring added complexity, delay, and attack surface; that is its stated rationale, not an independent comparative security finding. Choose based on whether a physical tether is practical for you, the supported actions on your platform, how you will avoid and recover from accidental triggers, and whether any destructive behavior is configured.
