A real-time AI workplace safety system combines the right cameras and industrial sensors with site-specific analytics, clear human-owned alerts, and an existing occupational safety and health (OSH) process. It can help identify visible events such as missing PPE or entry into a restricted area, but it cannot detect every hazard or replace hazard controls, trained supervisors, required PPE, or emergency procedures.

What an AI safety system can—and cannot—do

Computer vision can flag events visible in camera footage, including missing PPE, restricted-area entry, and unsafe proximity to machinery, when camera placement and models are configured for the workplace. EU-OSHA’s 2024 event-recognition case study describes AI integrated with CCTV to anticipate risks and improve safety reporting; its 2025 case-study summary gives examples of those detections.

Video does not reveal every exposure. A camera cannot establish that an invisible gas is present or measure an airborne concentration. Direct-reading instruments provide measurements for hazards such as gas, vapor, aerosols, and noise. Wearables may provide location, fatigue, or physiological signals where a documented hazard justifies collecting them. Treat these as different sources of evidence, not interchangeable ways to monitor the same risk.

Use AI to help surface conditions for timely review and intervention. OSHA’s hazard-identification guidance calls for identifying hazards in emergency and nonroutine situations and investigating injuries, illnesses, near misses, and other concerns to find root causes and prevent recurrence. An AI alert should feed that work; it is not a substitute for it.

Build the system in layers

1. Sensing

Start with the hazard assessment and select a sensing method that can actually detect the condition. Existing CCTV or PoE cameras may be suitable for visible events. Direct-reading industrial sensors address measured environmental conditions. Wearables are an option only when their signal is relevant to a defined safety need.

2. Edge processing and connectivity

Where practical, process time-sensitive video or alarms at the edge, near the camera or sensor, rather than making every decision depend on a remote connection. Plan what happens when the network or internet connection fails: which local alarms remain available, what data is buffered, and how the response team learns that coverage has been interrupted. EU-OSHA case-study material notes that continuous internet dependence can limit context capture.

3. Analytics

Configure computer-vision models for the actual site, camera views, zones, and safety rules. AIHA’s Using AI to Enhance OEHS guidance describes multimodal computer vision that can identify and track people, powered industrial trucks, and equipment from images or video. It also cautions that video quality, camera placement, infrastructure costs, and implementation logistics affect results. Combining video with sensor readings or historical incident information may add context, but does not remove the need to validate the system.

Match sensing technology to the hazard

Method Useful for Important limits and checks
Camera with computer vision Visible conditions such as PPE use, restricted-zone entry, and person-vehicle or person-machinery proximity. Depends on view, lighting, image quality, camera placement, and site-specific configuration. It cannot measure invisible exposure concentrations.
Direct-reading industrial sensor Measured conditions such as gas or vapor, aerosols, and noise; sensor applications also include fatigue-related monitoring. Match the sensor type and chemistry to the hazard, workplace, and applicable certification or regulatory requirements. Calibration and placement matter.
Wearable device Location, fatigue, or physiological signals when relevant to a documented hazard. Define why the signal is needed, who may access it, and how it will inform a safe response. Collection can raise worker privacy and trust concerns.

NIOSH’s Direct Reading and Sensor Technologies Center (August 12, 2024) identifies applications including aerosols, gas and vapor, fatigue, noise, and wearables. It notes that direct-reading technologies can provide more timely information and time-series data than traditional time-delayed laboratory monitoring, and can help monitor hazardous conditions, confirm interventions, and trigger alarms.

Implement it in a controlled sequence

  1. Define the hazard and response. State what event must be detected, who receives the alert, what safe action follows, and how you will measure whether the system helps.
  2. Establish a baseline. Use existing incident, near-miss, exposure, and inspection records. Preserve the predeployment period so later comparisons do not confuse a change in reporting with a change in safety.
  3. Choose the least intrusive effective sensor. Use a gas sensor for a gas hazard and a camera for an observable event; do not infer invisible exposures from video. Use wearables only where their information is justified by the documented hazard.
  4. Pilot one bounded area. Include workers and safety representatives in the pilot design. Keep existing controls in force while testing.
  5. Validate against the site’s hazard assessment. Check that the proposed detection and response fit the hazard and do not undermine engineering controls, PPE requirements, or emergency procedures.
  6. Connect response to existing processes. Link alert review, acknowledgement, investigation, and corrective action to the OSH management system rather than creating an unowned alert queue.
  7. Control changes. Revalidate after changes to model versions, camera position, lighting, sensor calibration, or thresholds because each can affect detection.
  8. Review deployment rules and communicate. Check privacy, retention, access, security, and labor-law requirements for the deployment geography. Explain the system’s purpose and worker rights in plain language before use.

Make alerts actionable and human-owned

An alert is useful only if someone can understand it and act safely. For each alert category, document its priority, recipient, acknowledgement expectation, escalation path, and fallback if no one responds. Include enough context for a trained reviewer to assess the event rather than treating a model label as proof. Define how urgent alarms reach the people responsible for intervention and how system outages are reported.

Separate immediate risk control from later investigation. A person responding to a possible hazard may need to make the area safe first; the safety team can then verify what occurred, identify contributing causes, and assign corrective action. Do not use a single automated detection as an automatic disciplinary decision.

Protect privacy, security, and worker trust

Decide and communicate the purpose of monitoring before collecting data. Specify what is recorded, who can see it, how long it is retained, and whether footage or sensor records may be used for any purpose beyond safety. Limit access and retention to what the documented purpose and applicable rules require, and protect data and system connections against unauthorized access.

Worker participation is part of deployment, not a post-launch announcement. EU-OSHA’s 2024 case study emphasizes involving workers and representatives and clearly explaining data use; its 2025 policy brief also stresses data security, privacy, infrastructure integration, communication of purpose, and cooperation between the company and technology manufacturer. The ILO’s April 23, 2025 report on AI and digitalization at work calls for risk assessment, worker participation, and preventive strategies as digital tools are introduced.

NIOSH’s September 2024 bulletin frames trustworthy AI around worker health, safety, and wellbeing. It describes transparency and accountability as supporting a worker’s ability to understand how the AI system operates and what its actions mean. Put that principle into practice with plain-language notices, a channel for questions or corrections, and a clear explanation of how people review disputed events.

Evaluate a pilot and compare vendors on site evidence

Measure performance in the area where the system will actually operate. At minimum, track detection latency, false alarms, missed events, uptime, connectivity loss, and response time. Compare results with the baseline and the hazard assessment; do not claim improvement without a predeployment comparison.

Ask vendors for validation relevant to your site, including how they measure false positives and false negatives, sensor calibration requirements, expected latency, offline behavior, security practices, and support for model or configuration changes. Check whether the system integrates with existing cameras and OSH software, and assess privacy controls, worker acceptance, cybersecurity, implementation logistics, and total cost of ownership.

There is no universal accuracy or injury-reduction percentage established for AI workplace safety systems. Results depend on the site, camera placement, sensor selection, training data, infrastructure, and implementation. A camera analytics product and a gas-monitoring product address different hazards, so compare each against its intended job rather than scoring one as a substitute for the other.
