A photo-based card grader should estimate condition from visible evidence—not ask an LLM to invent a grade. Computer vision can locate a card, correct its perspective, measure centering, and flag possible defects. A transparent scoring rule can then combine supported findings, show the evidence and uncertainty, and return “insufficient image evidence” when the photos are unreliable. That result is a preliminary condition estimate, not an official grade or proof of authenticity.

What a photo-based card grader should—and should not—do

The system’s job is to turn images into observable measurements and candidate defect findings. The grading logic—not a generative model—should determine how those findings affect an estimate. An LLM can help explain the results in plain language, but it should not choose the score.

This distinction matters because professional grading considers multiple properties. PSA lists scratches, dents, centering, paper condition, and print quality among the factors its graders consider, and its standards allow some judgment about overall eye appeal. A camera-based tool sees only what its images reveal; it cannot assume a hidden or obscured area is clean.

Keep condition separate from authenticity

PSA puts the distinction plainly: “Authentication verifies the originality or genuineness of a trading card, while grading assesses the quality and condition.” PSA’s FAQ discusses these as separate tasks. A visual condition estimate must not imply that the card is genuine, and a condition score cannot substitute for authentication.

Use professional standards as references, not as a universal formula

PSA describes a PSA Gem Mint 10 card as virtually perfect and gives approximate centering references of 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. It also says grader discretion may allow a small variance based on overall eye appeal. Those are PSA-specific references—not universal industry thresholds and not a complete grade algorithm. Keep them labeled and configurable rather than silently treating them as the rules for every grading company or card type. PSA’s grading standards

How to build the image-to-estimate pipeline

A credible workflow should preserve the link between an image, a measurement, and the estimate it influences. The system should be able to show not just a number, but which visible evidence produced it.

  1. Capture both sides. Request clear front and back images. A steady phone position and consistent framing make repeated captures easier; a mount may help hold the phone, but there is no evidence here that a mount improves grading accuracy. PSA documents smartphone card scanning in its app; scanning is a capture workflow, not an official grade.
  2. Locate the card boundary. Detect the card’s outline and check whether it is cropped, obscured, or confused with a sleeve or background. If the boundary is uncertain, do not report precise border measurements.
  3. Rectify perspective. Correct for the card being photographed at an angle before comparing borders. Perspective correction can make the card appear rectangular in the image, but it cannot recover details hidden by glare, blur, or reflections.
  4. Measure centering. Estimate the visible border widths on each side, separately for front and reverse, and show the measurements and method. Treat centering as one condition indicator, not as the grade.
  5. Inspect regions for candidate defects. Organize findings into corners, edges, surface, and centering. PSA’s grader notes use these categories, while AGS describes its own computer-vision approach as separating card images into edges, corners, and surface. These product descriptions illustrate ways to organize an analysis; they do not independently establish accuracy. PSA grader notes · AGS
  6. Apply an explicit rule. Combine only features the system actually detected, using a documented and auditable scoring rule. If a feature is missing or unreliable, represent that uncertainty rather than treating the missing evidence as a clean result.
  7. Show findings beside the estimate. Return annotated regions, measurements, confidence or uncertainty, and the estimate’s scope. If glare, blur, sleeve reflections, cropping, or perspective makes a region unreliable, request another image or return “insufficient image evidence.”

This workflow is a design approach inferred from published grading factors and the stated limits of centering tools, not a validated performance claim. No controlled head-to-head accuracy evidence is established here for photo-based estimates versus professional grading.

What a centering measurement can tell you

Computer vision can compare the visible left and right borders and the top and bottom borders after locating and rectifying the card. A useful result reports those measurements, the image regions used, and any uncertainty in the card boundary. It should identify which side or face was measured and avoid false precision when the borders are hard to distinguish.

VAN GRADE describes its result as “a centering reference, not an official grade or guarantee,” and notes that professional grading also evaluates corners, edges, and surface. VAN GRADE’s centering tool is an example of a centering-only reference, not evidence that centering alone predicts a final grade.

For a named comparison, PSA’s published PSA 10 reference is approximately 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse, with the stated discretion for small variance based on eye appeal. A software interface should label these figures as PSA’s reference and should not apply them as an industry-wide pass/fail line or as a substitute for assessing other condition factors. Design scoring so the LLM cannot pick the grade

Separate detection, decision, and explanation into distinct components:

  • Detection: Computer vision proposes measurements and candidate findings tied to image regions, such as a possible corner issue or surface mark.
  • Decision: A fixed, versioned rule uses supported findings to produce an estimate. Its thresholds, weights, and treatment of missing evidence should be explicit and reviewable.
  • Explanation: An LLM may turn structured findings into readable feedback. It should not add defects that the detector did not report, reinterpret uncertain observations as facts, or alter the score.

Show the rule or reference used, the evidence that affected the outcome, and the parts of the card the system could not assess. A single unqualified grade-like number hides too much: it gives the reader no way to tell whether the estimate reflects visible condition, a missed region, or an assumption.

How to communicate uncertainty and limits

Confidence should be attached to individual findings or image regions, not used as a blanket guarantee that the whole card has been assessed correctly. A system can be confident about centering while uncertain about a reflective surface, or detect a possible edge issue while the card boundary itself is unclear.

  • Flag glare, blur, cropping, sleeve reflections, and strong perspective when they interfere with inspection.
  • Identify which side and region were assessed, and which were not reliably visible.
  • Ask for a better image or return “insufficient image evidence” instead of silently assigning a favorable finding to an obscured region.
  • Call the output a preliminary visual condition estimate—not an official PSA, CGC, BGS, or other professional grade.
  • Do not claim that the tool authenticates the card or that its estimate is equivalent to a professional examination.

These limits are important because grader judgment can include eye appeal, and the reviewed vendor descriptions do not provide independent, controlled comparisons showing how accurately a photo-based system reproduces professional results.

Why population statistics should not determine a card’s score

PSA’s undated “Getting Started With Grading” page reports approximate historical distributions: 90% of Ultra-Modern Sport cards (2017-present) and Modern trading card games (2003-present) graded PSA 8 or higher; 80% of Modern Sport cards (1986-2016) graded PSA 8 or higher; and 80% of Vintage TCG cards (pre-2003) graded PSA 7 or higher. PSA also says it grades cards individually, not according to those population-level statistics. PSA’s grading overview

These are PSA-reported distributions, not predictions for an individual card. They should not be used as a model prior without careful attention to selection bias and whether the cards in the statistics match the system’s target population.

Scanning a card is not the same as grading it

PSA’s FAQ describes a card scanner and research features, demonstrating that smartphone scanning is part of a real card workflow. It does not establish that an automated scan assigns an official grade. A scan can help capture or identify a card; an estimate based on images remains a software assessment, and a professional service’s result is separate.
