The Avnet RZBoard V2L and Renesas RZ/V2L SMARC Evaluation Kit are different boards with separate software instructions. Renesas documents a Qt SDK build for the SMARC kit, but that command is not verified for the RZBoard V2L. For the RZBoard, use the Linux Yocto User Manual and Development Guide that match your software release to identify the supported machine, image, and deployment steps before building or flashing anything.
First, identify which RZ/V2L board you have
The Avnet RZBoard V2L is a compact development board based on Renesas’s RZ/V2L processor. It is not the Renesas RZ/V2L SMARC Evaluation Kit. Their board support packages, machine configurations, image recipes, and deployment instructions may differ, so a command documented for one should not be assumed to work on the other.
Renesas’s getting-started page describes its own kit as “The RZ/V2L Evaluation Board Kit (EVK) is the ideal board kit for RZ/V2L evaluation.” That statement refers to the Renesas EVK, not the Avnet RZBoard. See Renesas RZ/V2L Getting Started.
The RZBoard product page identifies the board SKU as AES-RZB-V2L-SK-G and links a board-specific Linux Yocto User Manual and Development Guide. Start from those documents, choosing versions that match the RZBoard software release you intend to build: Tria Technologies RZBoard V2L Development Board.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Know what “Qt-enabled” means
Three different things are easy to confuse:
- A target image is the operating system built to run on the board. A Qt-enabled image includes the runtime components needed by Qt applications, subject to the image recipe and configuration.
- A development SDK is installed on a development PC and supplies tools and libraries for cross-compiling applications for a target. It is not itself an image to flash onto the board.
- Qt Creator is a desktop IDE. Building an SDK does not establish that Qt Creator is installed on the board or that a graphical desktop will appear when the board boots.
Renesas’s Linux Start-up Guide, revision 1.05 dated June 30, 2025, shows SDK generation for the SMARC EVK: MACHINE=smarc-rzv2l bitbake core-image-qt -c populate_sdk. It says the installer is placed in build/tmp/deploy/sdk/ and installed by running the generated .sh file. The guide says the SDK can be installed on the build PC or another PC. This is a host-side application-development workflow for the SMARC kit; it does not verify an RZBoard image recipe or deployment process. See the Renesas SMARC EVK of RZ/V2L Linux Start-up Guide.

- Which Yocto layer or BSP release is supported, and what is its documented RZBoard machine name?
- Which image recipe includes the Qt runtime you need? Is the recipe supplied by the board BSP or does the guide require configuration changes?
- Does the build produce a complete bootable image, or separate kernel, device-tree, and root-filesystem artifacts?
- Which boot medium and transfer or flashing method does the guide specify?
- After boot, how does the guide start the application, and what display, input, or graphics setup does it require?
Use the manual’s exact machine and recipe names. Do not substitute smarc-rzv2l or core-image-qt just because they appear in Renesas’s SMARC guide. The public Renesas meta-renesas Yocto layer README identifies smarc-rzv2l with the RZ/V2L SMARC evaluation kit; it is not evidence that this is the RZBoard’s supported configuration.
Renesas’s RZ/V2L Getting Started page points users to the RZ/V Verified Linux Package and Linux Start-up Guide and notes that builds can take several hours. Check the package revision and its compatibility notes against the RZBoard documentation before selecting it; processor-family similarity alone does not establish board compatibility.

Build, deploy, and run in the right order
The exact RZBoard commands, Qt version, boot-media preparation, and application launch sequence are not established by the cited SMARC guide. Use this sequence as a checklist, filling in each action from the matching RZBoard manual rather than borrowing unverified SMARC commands.
- Select the matching software release. From the RZBoard product page, open the Linux Yocto User Manual and Development Guide and confirm that they apply to your board revision and chosen software package.
- Set up the documented build environment. Follow the guide’s host prerequisites, repository or package setup, and environment initialization. Confirm the target machine name and image recipe in that release’s instructions.
- Build the target image or SDK for your goal. Build the target image if you need a bootable system with Qt runtime support. Build an SDK if you need to cross-compile applications on a development PC. Do not treat SDK generation as a substitute for a target image.
- Deploy using the board’s documented method. Follow the guide’s artifact selection, storage-medium preparation, and transfer or flashing procedure exactly. The RZBoard’s listed eMMC and microSD interfaces do not, by themselves, establish which one a particular software release uses for installation or booting.
- Boot and verify the runtime. Use the guide’s boot instructions and confirm the expected system starts. Then follow its Qt runtime, display, and application-launch guidance. An image containing Qt does not on its own guarantee a desktop session or automatic application launch.
- Cross-compile and transfer an application if needed. Install the SDK on the development PC as instructed, build against the matching target configuration, and transfer the resulting application by the method supported in the RZBoard guide.
Hardware context: what the RZBoard provides
The Renesas/Avnet product brief dated October 2022 lists 2 GB DDR4, 32 GB eMMC, microSD, HDMI and MIPI display interfaces, a MIPI CSI camera interface, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. These are manufacturer-reported specifications, not independent test results. A basic Qt application does not inherently require every listed interface; the display and input setup needed depends on what the application does and on the board software’s documented support. The brief is linked from the RZBoard product page.

What to verify when a Qt application does not appear
- The board boots but no Qt desktop appears: Check the selected image’s documented boot target and graphical-session behavior. A Qt runtime and an automatically launched desktop are different requirements.
- The application will not compile on the host: Verify that the SDK was generated for the same target configuration and software release as the board image, then use the matching SDK environment setup instructions.
- The application compiles but fails on the board: Confirm that the target image contains the required Qt runtime and other application dependencies, and that the application was built for the board’s architecture and libraries.
- A familiar Renesas command fails: Re-check whether it came from the SMARC EVK guide. Do not apply its machine name, recipe, or deployment procedure to the RZBoard unless the RZBoard guide explicitly supports them.
