A Raspberry Pi 3 can run Amiga emulation, but the available documentation does not verify that a complete build still costs less than $100. The practical route is to use software intended for older hardware, provide the required Kickstart ROM files, and price every part—not just the board—before treating the budget as achievable.

Can a Raspberry Pi 3 run an Amiga emulator?

Yes. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine documented an Amibian and UAE4ARM setup on a Pi 3, and the current Amiberry Quick Start guide identifies Amiberry-Lite as optimized for “older/slower hardware (RPi 3 or older).” The magazine walkthrough is more than nine years old, however, so treat it as a historical setup example rather than confirmation that every detail remains current. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s Pi 3 walkthrough and the Amiberry Quick Start guide, edited August 2, 2026 document the two paths.

What the build requires

The Pi is only one part of a usable setup. The historical Amibian walkthrough names a microSD card, USB storage, a wired controller, Kickstart ROM files, and the Amibian distribution. You will also need a display connection and power for the board; whether you already own a monitor, keyboard, or other peripherals changes what you must buy.

  • Raspberry Pi 3: the computer running the emulator.
  • microSD card: holds the operating system and emulator setup.
  • Power supply and display connection: required to use the Pi as a standalone system; check the needs of your particular board and display.
  • Controller: a wired Xbox 360 controller appears in the historical walkthrough, but it does not establish that this is the best or only current option.
  • Kickstart ROM files: firmware files used by the emulated Amiga. Amiberry lists them as a requirement.
  • Game media: for example, an ADF disk image or another supported format.
  • Optional USB storage and keyboard: useful for moving files and configuration, depending on your setup.

Can the complete setup still stay under $100?

The available sources do not establish current Raspberry Pi 3 prices or a complete bill of materials, so they cannot confirm the under-$100 claim. A board-only price is not the total cost of a working setup. Before relying on that limit, add current local prices for the Pi 3, power supply, microSD card, controller, and any display or HDMI items you need, and state which peripherals you already own. Availability and prices vary by market and date.

The old magazine walkthrough quoted Amiga Forever Plus Edition at €29.95, but that is a historical price, not a current offer or a verified part of a present-day budget. Do not use it to calculate today’s total. The original walkthrough provides the historical context.

Choose software suited to the Pi 3

Amiberry-Lite

Amiberry’s current guide separates its standard version, recommended for Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, from Amiberry-Lite, optimized for Pi 3 or older hardware. It requires Amiga Kickstart ROM files and supports ADF, ZIP/7z disk images, WHDLoad .lha archives, CD images, and RP9 packages. On a slower system, if cycle-exact mode cannot maintain full speed, the guide recommends trying “Good compatibility (approximate).” That setting is a performance trade-off, not a promise that every game will run perfectly.

RetroPie Amiga cores

RetroPie documents lr-puae2021 as the option for lower-power devices and lr-puae as the more demanding, accuracy-oriented alternative. Its Amiga documentation lists ROM filenames, versions, and checksums, and places the ROM files in RetroPie’s BIOS directory. Follow the documentation for the core you install; filenames and placement are not interchangeable assumptions. See RetroPie’s Amiga documentation.

Option Documented fit Practical consideration
Amiberry-Lite Optimized for Raspberry Pi 3 or older hardware, according to the Amiberry guide. Try approximate compatibility if cycle-exact mode does not maintain full speed.
lr-puae2021 RetroPie describes it as the lower-power-device version. A documented choice for constrained hardware.
lr-puae RetroPie describes it as more demanding and accuracy-oriented. Its higher demands may be a poor fit if the Pi cannot sustain the desired performance.

Amiberry quick start

  1. Install and launch Amiberry using the setup appropriate to your system.
  2. Copy your Kickstart ROM files into the Kickstarts directory, then rescan the ROM paths.
  3. Choose an Amiga model, such as A500 or A1200, as appropriate for the software.
  4. Load compatible game media, such as an ADF image, and start emulation.
  5. If the Pi 3 cannot maintain full speed with cycle-exact mode, try “Good compatibility (approximate).”

Historical Amibian and UAE4ARM workflow

The Raspberry Pi Official Magazine walkthrough describes writing Amibian to a microSD card, booting into UAE4ARM, and copying ROM and game files from USB storage. It then rescans ROM paths, selects an Amiga configuration, confirms a matching Kickstart ROM, mounts an ADF image, and starts emulation. In that walkthrough, F12 returns to the UAE4ARM interface for disk swaps and save states. Because this account is old, confirm that its software and instructions match the versions you use.

Kickstart ROMs: what to know

An emulator program alone is not the complete Amiga system: Amiberry lists Kickstart ROM files among its requirements. The historical magazine article says UAE4ARM includes an AROS ROM but notes that it supports only some programs; it recommends genuine Amiga Kickstarts for reliability. RetroPie’s documentation identifies ROM variants and checksums for its supported cores, which can help verify that a file matches the expected version.
