For most small SaaS teams, Grafana Cloud is the simplest cheap Prometheus alternative when you need application metrics and dashboards without operating Kubernetes. It stores and visualizes Prometheus-compatible metrics as a hosted service, so you avoid running Prometheus servers, storage, upgrades, and cluster infrastructure. If you only need to know whether endpoints are reachable, Uptime Kuma is cheaper in license cost: it is free, open source, and self-hosted. If you need logs, traces, error tracking, real-user monitoring, and incident response in the same managed product, Better Stack is the broader option. Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus fits AWS-heavy teams that already understand Prometheus and PromQL.

The key decision is not which product has the lowest advertised price. It is whether you need application metrics or only availability checks, and whether you prefer paying a service or spending engineering time on hosting.

Choose by the question you need answered

Start with the operational question, not the product name. A single SaaS can use one tool for uptime and another for application telemetry, but many early teams can begin with one narrow capability.

Your immediate need Best starting point Why
Is the website, API, database, or VPS reachable? Uptime Kuma Self-hosted endpoint checks, notifications, and status pages with no software license charge.
How many requests fail, how slow are they, and how much capacity remains? Grafana Cloud Managed Prometheus-style metrics and dashboards without maintaining Prometheus storage or Kubernetes.
Do we need logs, traces, errors, real-user data, and on-call workflows together? Better Stack Managed uptime, logs, infrastructure metrics, tracing, error tracking, real-user monitoring, incidents, and subscriber status pages.
Are we an AWS or container team that wants PromQL compatibility? Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus Fully managed, Prometheus-compatible metrics storage for AWS, on-premises, hybrid, and multicloud container environments.

A “cheap” choice can mean a low subscription, a low infrastructure bill, or little operator time. Those are different costs. A free self-hosted monitor still needs a machine, disk space, updates, backups, and a reliable path for notifications. A hosted service can cost more per month while saving the person-hours needed to keep monitoring available.

What Prometheus does—and what it does not do

Prometheus is a metrics system. The Prometheus Authors describe it as “a system to collect and process metrics, not an event logging system.” Metrics are numeric time series such as request count, error count, latency, memory use, queue depth, or active subscriptions. Prometheus generally pulls those values over HTTP from an application or exporter. Pushgateway exists for jobs that cannot be scraped normally, but it is an exception rather than the default collection model.

This distinction prevents a common design error: choosing a Prometheus replacement when the real requirement is log search. A metric can tell you that HTTP 500 responses increased; a log record can show the exception, request identifier, and customer context. If logs matter, plan a separate log service or choose a platform that includes logs. Uptime checks answer yet another question: whether a probe received an expected response from outside the service.

Kubernetes is common in Prometheus examples because it provides a large, dynamic environment to discover and scrape. It is not a prerequisite for a small SaaS. Your application can expose metrics from a virtual machine, a single Docker host, or a managed runtime and send them to a hosted backend.

How the four practical options compare

Option Operations Telemetry scope Cost shape Main trade-off
Grafana Cloud Hosted Metrics, with optional logs, traces, profiles, users, application observability, Kubernetes monitoring, and database observability Usage metered independently by product Usage can increase the bill; exact rates depend on plan, region, retention, and ingestion
Uptime Kuma Self-hosted with Docker or Docker Compose HTTP/HTTPS, TCP, SSL, IP, ICMP ping, database checks, status pages, notifications, and a Prometheus metrics endpoint No software license charge; you pay in host and maintenance effort Not a full metrics, logs, tracing, or incident platform
Better Stack Managed SaaS Uptime, SQL-queryable logs, infrastructure metrics, distributed tracing, error tracking, real-user monitoring, incidents, and subscriber status pages Free tier and paid responder-based plans are published; limits and prices can change Broader capability than a basic checker means more features and potentially higher cost
Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus Fully managed AWS service Prometheus-compatible metrics and PromQL AWS service usage; current rates are not stated here Metric-only; broader observability may require CloudWatch or other services

Grafana Cloud: the easiest managed Prometheus-style dashboard

Grafana Cloud is the strongest default when you want application metrics but do not want to run the Prometheus server yourself. You instrument your application, expose or forward Prometheus-compatible measurements, and build dashboards and alerts in a hosted environment. The service handles the backend operations that otherwise become your responsibility: durable metric storage, upgrades, capacity planning, and availability of the monitoring control plane.

Understand the bill before sending telemetry

Grafana Cloud does not use one flat infrastructure price. Its documentation describes separate meters for products. Metrics are measured by active metric series; logs by gigabytes; traces, profiles, monthly active users, host hours, application observability, Kubernetes monitoring, and database observability use their own billing concepts. Your bill therefore depends on what you send or use, the selected plan, retention, and your region. Check the live pricing page for current rates before committing to a retention period or high-cardinality instrumentation pattern.

Set up a first dashboard without Kubernetes

  1. List the decisions the dashboard must support. Start with request volume, error rate, latency, and a resource signal such as CPU, memory, queue depth, or database connections. Avoid collecting every label and event until you know how it will be used.
  2. Instrument the application. Use a Prometheus-compatible client for your language or framework and expose an HTTP metrics endpoint, or use an integration that forwards the measurements to Grafana Cloud. Keep labels bounded: a route name is usually useful; an unrestricted user ID is usually expensive and difficult to aggregate.
  3. Create the hosted connection. In Grafana Cloud, create the metrics endpoint and authentication credentials shown for your account. Store credentials as deployment secrets, not in source code or a public container image.
  4. Send a small, testable set of series. Deploy one instance first and confirm that its target is receiving samples. Verify timestamps, units, and labels before adding workers or background jobs.
  5. Build panels around symptoms. Add a request-rate panel, an error-ratio panel, latency percentiles, and saturation indicators. A dashboard that shows only host CPU cannot explain a customer-facing slowdown; a dashboard that shows only latency cannot reveal a full queue.
  6. Add alerts with a response. Every alert should identify an owner, a threshold, a time window, and the next action. Alerting on a one-minute blip creates noise; alerting on a sustained error ratio or unavailable dependency is more actionable.

When Grafana Cloud is the right “cheap” answer

  • You need application-level metrics rather than only an external ping.
  • You want Prometheus concepts and query compatibility without maintaining a storage cluster.
  • You can control metric cardinality and estimate ingestion before enabling optional logs, traces, or profiles.
  • You prefer a hosted service over patching and backing up a monitoring server.

Uptime Kuma: the lowest-cost answer for availability

Uptime Kuma is an open-source, free, self-hosted monitoring tool. Its documentation recommends Docker and Docker Compose and describes use cases including personal websites, VPSs, APIs, home servers, and business infrastructure. It can check HTTP/HTTPS endpoints, TCP ports, SSL certificates, IP addresses, ICMP ping targets, and databases. It also supports notifications and public status pages.

The cited June 8, 2026 comparison reports checks as frequent as 20 seconds. Treat that figure as a published product detail, not a guarantee for every deployment or plan. The actual usefulness of a check depends on network path, timeout, retry, and notification settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deploy it on a host you already operate

  1. Choose a stable Linux host. An existing VPS or small server is usually simpler than creating a new machine solely for monitoring. The host must remain reachable when the application fails; placing the monitor on the same failed host defeats the test.
  2. Run the documented Docker or Docker Compose deployment. Persist the application data directory on durable storage so monitor definitions, notification settings, and history survive container recreation.
  3. Protect the web interface. Use strong credentials and, where appropriate, a reverse proxy with HTTPS and network restrictions. Do not expose an administration port directly to the public internet without access controls.
  4. Add monitors one at a time. Begin with the public web URL, API health endpoint, certificate expiry, and a critical TCP or database dependency. Configure a notification channel and trigger a deliberate test outage before relying on it.
  5. Publish a status page only for information you are willing to disclose. A status page can reduce support requests, but it can also reveal service names and incident timing. Review which monitors are public.
  6. Schedule maintenance. Back up the persistent data, update the container, test notification delivery, and verify that the monitoring host itself has disk, memory, and network capacity.

Know its boundary

Uptime Kuma is excellent for “is it up?” It is not a replacement for a complete application-observability stack. It does not turn every request into a long-term metric series, provide a full log-search system, collect distributed traces, or manage a complete incident workflow. Its Prometheus metrics endpoint can be scraped with an API key, which lets another metrics system monitor Kuma itself; that feature does not transform Kuma into a Prometheus-compatible application metrics backend.

Better Stack: managed observability when one checker is not enough

Better Stack combines managed uptime monitoring with SQL-queryable logs, infrastructure metrics, distributed tracing, error tracking, real-user monitoring, incident management, and subscriber status pages. It is the natural step when the team wants one managed interface for both detection and investigation rather than assembling separate uptime, log, and trace products.

The June 8, 2026 comparison lists a free tier with ten monitors and a responder plan listed at $29 per responder per month. These are dated vendor terms, not permanent prices; verify current limits, retention, notification rules, and responder definitions before budgeting. The same comparison describes Better Stack checks at 30-second intervals and Uptime Kuma checks as low as 20 seconds, but interval alone does not establish which service is faster or more reliable for your workload.

Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus: an AWS growth path

Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus is a serverless, fully managed service compatible with open-source Prometheus. AWS positions it for AWS, on-premises, hybrid, and multicloud container environments. It supports PromQL, integrates with Amazon Managed Grafana, and removes the need to operate Prometheus components yourself.

AWS explicitly describes the service as metric-only. If you need a unified experience for logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, and alerting, AWS recommends using CloudWatch or additional services alongside it. That separation matters when estimating both architecture and cost.

Use it when the surrounding platform is already AWS

  • Your workloads already run in AWS or containers and your team is comfortable with Prometheus scraping and PromQL.
  • You want a managed backend but do not want to redesign existing Prometheus instrumentation.
  • You accept that logs and traces will live in separate services unless you add them.

For a single beginner SaaS with no AWS operating model, Grafana Cloud is usually easier to explain and start. Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus becomes more attractive as AWS identity, networking, and container governance are already established.

Three small-SaaS architectures that work

Availability-only stack

Run Uptime Kuma in Docker on a host independent of the application. Monitor the public site, API health route, certificate expiry, critical TCP service, and database reachability. Send notifications to the channel someone checks outside the failing system, and maintain a small public status page if customers benefit from it.

Application metrics without Kubernetes

Expose Prometheus-compatible metrics from the application running on a VM, managed runtime, or single Docker host. Send them to Grafana Cloud, then keep logs in a separate service if log search is required. This gives you request, latency, error, and saturation visibility without deploying a Kubernetes control plane.

Managed all-in-one operations

Use Better Stack when uptime is only the first requirement and the team also needs logs, traces, error context, real-user signals, and incident coordination. Define retention and access policies before enabling every telemetry type.

Design the first SaaS dashboard

A useful beginner dashboard answers four questions in order:

  1. Are users reaching us? Show request rate, successful requests, failed requests, and availability from an external probe.
  2. Are requests succeeding? Track error count and error ratio by service or route. Keep route labels normalized so a unique URL does not create a new series for every customer or identifier.
  3. Are responses fast enough? Use latency distributions or percentiles rather than only averages. Pair latency with request volume so a percentile from three requests is not mistaken for a broad trend.
  4. What resource is limiting us? Add CPU, memory, database connections, queue depth, worker utilization, or another capacity signal that matches your architecture.

Then add business metrics that change decisions, such as completed checkouts, active jobs, or failed payments. Business counters should not contain personal data. Use dashboards for diagnosis and alerts for conditions that require action; do not alert on every metric merely because it exists.

Cost and operational trade-offs

Cost question Grafana Cloud Uptime Kuma Better Stack Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus
Software license Usage-based hosted service No software license charge Free and paid managed tiers are published AWS service usage
Infrastructure you operate Monitoring backend is hosted Host, storage, updates, backups, and notification delivery Monitoring backend is hosted AWS configuration and integrations, not Prometheus servers
What drives growth in cost Active series, logs, traces, profiles, users, host hours, retention, and enabled products Host size and operator time; monitor count and interval affect workload Plan limits, responders, monitors, retention, and telemetry volume AWS ingestion, storage, query, and related service usage
Best cost control Bound labels and review ingestion before enabling optional products Use an independent existing host and maintain backups Buy only the capabilities and responder seats you need Keep metric cardinality controlled and account for companion services

Do not compare a self-hosted tool’s zero license price with a hosted service’s subscription and conclude that one is universally cheaper. Include engineering time, outage risk, data retention, alert delivery, and the cost of investigating an incident with incomplete telemetry.

Common mistakes and fixes

Using uptime checks as application metrics

A 200 response from a health endpoint can hide a slow search query, a failing background worker, or a rising payment error rate. Keep endpoint checks for outside-in availability and add application counters and latency measurements for inside-out behavior.

Sending unbounded labels

Labels containing user IDs, request IDs, full URLs, or arbitrary error text create a large number of active series. Replace them with bounded categories such as route templates, status classes, or error types. Review series growth before enabling a new integration.

Putting the monitor on the system it must monitor

If the application host loses power, a monitor installed there cannot notify you. Place an external probe or a separate monitoring host on a different failure domain. For self-hosted Uptime Kuma, this is the most important placement decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring notification failure

Test an outage deliberately, verify that the message arrives, and document who responds. A green dashboard is not proof that notification credentials, network access, and escalation rules still work.

Assuming metric storage includes logs

Prometheus-compatible metrics do not contain the full event context of logs. Add a log system or select a platform with logs when debugging requires stack traces, request identifiers, or customer-specific records.

Trusting old plan limits

Monitor intervals, free-tier quotas, responder prices, retention, and included products change. The Better Stack figures above are from June 8, 2026; verify current terms, and check Grafana Cloud’s live regional pricing before making a long-term estimate.

Can a Raspberry Pi host the beginner monitor?

A Raspberry Pi 5 is a plausible low-cost host for a small Uptime Kuma deployment because Uptime Kuma documents Linux, Docker, home-server, and self-hosting use cases. It should be treated as an optional host, not as the Prometheus alternative itself. There is no stated monitor-count limit, CPU or RAM threshold, benchmark, or guaranteed compatibility in the available documentation, so size and validate the device for your own check frequency, history retention, notification load, and backup plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical migration path

  1. Week one: establish availability. Deploy Uptime Kuma or another external checker, monitor the customer-facing paths, and test alerts.
  2. Next: add four application signals. Instrument request rate, error ratio, latency, and one saturation metric. Send them to Grafana Cloud or an AWS-managed Prometheus backend if your platform already favors AWS.
  3. Then: connect investigation data. Add logs, traces, and error tracking only when an incident cannot be resolved from metrics and deployment context.
  4. Finally: simplify ownership. Remove duplicate monitors, document alert responders, review retention and cardinality monthly, and keep the monitoring system independent of the application’s primary failure domain.

The Bottom Line

Choose Grafana Cloud for the simplest managed Prometheus-style metrics dashboard without Kubernetes, Uptime Kuma for inexpensive self-hosted availability checks, Better Stack for managed full-stack observability, and Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus when AWS and PromQL compatibility already define your architecture.
