Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) reported 12,300 fewer students than the prior year in its September 14, 2026 benchmark count, a 5.6% decline that includes charter-school losses. Palm Beach County also reported lower enrollment, but its comparison uses an August count against the previous October benchmark, so the two districts’ figures are not a direct like-for-like comparison.

How many students has Broward County lost?

WLRN reported that BCPS’s September 14, 2026 official benchmark count was 12,300 students below the prior year, or a reported 5.6% decline. That figure includes charter schools; it should not be read as a count of losses in district-operated schools alone. The first-day count in August had shown a decrease of about 11,000.

WLRN also reported districtwide enrollment of 177,575 for the 2026–27 school year, compared with 204,721 four years earlier, in 2022–23. Its report described the earlier total as 13% larger. The district’s official benchmark counts are intended as official year-to-year statistical points and include PreK–12 students entered in its FOCUS student-information system.

How does Broward compare with Palm Beach County?

The reported decline is larger in Broward, but the counts use different dates and baselines. The School District of Palm Beach County’s September 3, 2026 memo reports an August 24, 2026 11th-day count. It found 156,059 students in traditional district-operated schools and 177,772 across all public schools in Palm Beach County.

District and count What was counted Published comparison
Broward, September 14, 2026 benchmark WLRN says the reported decline includes charter-school losses 12,300 fewer than the prior year; reported as a 5.6% decline by WLRN
Palm Beach, August 24, 2026 11th-day count 156,059 in traditional district-operated schools; 177,772 across all public schools Traditional district-operated PreK–12 enrollment was 6,090 below the previous October benchmark; charter enrollment was 978 lower

Palm Beach’s memo says a later October benchmark would be more stabilized for planning. Broward’s figure is a September year-over-year comparison, while Palm Beach’s reported 6,090 decrease compares its August count with the previous October benchmark. The figures therefore show that both districts reported declines, but they do not establish a precise apples-to-apples ranking under the same count date, baseline, and population.

For historical context, BCPS’s historical enrollment counts page lists 236,667 students in 2025–26 and 247,501 in 2024–25. Those published historical totals are not substitutes for WLRN’s 2026–27 benchmark comparison.

What is behind Broward’s decline?

The sources cited here establish the size of the reported decline, but do not establish a cause for BCPS’s 2026–27 loss. WLRN reported that charter enrollment was down 2,071 students—the first loss in the thousands during the period it described—and that district prekindergarten was the only grade or level reported as growing, by four students. Those details describe where reported counts changed; they do not by themselves explain why.

Why does the enrollment decline matter?

WLRN reported more than 60,000 empty seats accumulated across the district over five years and said the enrollment decline translates to more than $430 million less in the district budget. These are figures reported by WLRN, not independent calculations here. Fewer students can mean less spending power for programs and resources, while unused capacity can lead the district to consider how to operate its school buildings.

Districtwide enrollment and an individual school’s use of capacity are different measures. WLRN reported Lloyd Estates Elementary in Oakland Park at 61% of capacity and Dolphin Bay Elementary in Miramar at 48%. It also reported Glades Middle at 38% enrollment and said Dolphin Bay supporters raised concerns about a proposed absorption of the school with Glades Middle to create a K–8 model. Those school examples do not show that every BCPS school has the same utilization or closure outlook.

Are Broward schools closing because enrollment is falling?

As of WLRN’s September 22, 2026 report, BCPS was considering 10 closures for the following school year; those proposals had not passed. The board had voted the previous year to close six schools. WLRN reported average annual savings of $1.2 million per school and $10 million collectively for that earlier group. It said savings for the newly proposed closures were not yet known because the affected schools had not been finalized.

WLRN reported that board member Rebecca Thompson said: “It is not just to save money. It is not just to look at spreadsheets and make the numbers work.” Her statement conveys her view of the decision, not a board-wide consensus or evidence that a particular closure would improve student outcomes.

The same report said staff planned to bring comprehensive datasets covering 11 proposals to an October 6, 2026 board workshop, survey families at affected schools, make survey results available by a November 4 workshop, and hold a final board vote in December. Those were plans as of September 22, not confirmed outcomes. The district’s official enrollment-count page explains the benchmark method; the district’s historical-count page lists past totals. Palm Beach’s current report is listed in its student enrollment reports catalog.
