For most modern Windows games, borderless windowed is the safer choice when you Alt-Tab frequently. It remains part of the normal desktop presentation path, so switching to a browser, chat window, recording tool, or another monitor usually avoids the display handoff that can make classic exclusive fullscreen flash, pause, or show a black screen.
Exclusive fullscreen can still be the better setting for a particular game if its borderless mode has poor frame pacing, selects the wrong refresh rate, mishandles HDR or variable refresh rate (VRR), or introduces a title-specific focus problem. The menu label alone does not settle the question: Windows Fullscreen Optimizations and modern graphics APIs can make a setting labeled “fullscreen” behave like an optimized borderless presentation.
The short answer
- Choose borderless windowed first when quick, reliable Alt-Tab switching, overlays, multi-monitor use, or background tools matter.
- Try exclusive fullscreen only to solve a demonstrated problem in that game, such as unstable frame pacing, incorrect display timing, HDR/VRR trouble, or unusual input behavior.
- Do not assume “fullscreen” means old-style hardware-exclusive mode. Windows 11 may apply Fullscreen Optimizations, and Direct3D 12 does not support traditional exclusive fullscreen in the older sense.
- There is no universal FPS or latency winner. The result depends on the game’s API, swap-chain presentation model, Windows version, driver, display, and multi-monitor configuration.
Microsoft describes one advantage of flip-model borderless presentation as “faster Alt-Tab switching.” That is platform guidance, not a promise of a fixed switching time for every title.

Borderless windowed
A borderless game is a window without a visible frame or title bar, sized to cover the display. Windows still treats it as part of the desktop’s window system. The Desktop Window Manager (DWM) remains responsible for composing the desktop and coordinating visible applications.

Because the game is still a window, moving focus to another application normally does not require Windows to surrender and reacquire exclusive control of a monitor. That is why borderless is generally more convenient for switching to a browser, chat, capture software, or a second display.
Classic exclusive fullscreen
Traditional exclusive fullscreen gives the game ownership of the display output. The game can control the active resolution, refresh rate, and presentation surface more directly than an ordinary window. When focus changes, Windows and the game may have to perform a display or swap-chain transition before the desktop can be shown.
That ownership can be useful when a title’s windowed path is old, poorly implemented, or selecting an unsuitable display mode. It also explains why Alt-Tab can produce a delay, a resolution flash, a black screen, or a temporary loss of HDR or VRR.

“Borderless” and “exclusive fullscreen” are user-interface labels, not guarantees about the underlying presentation path. Windows Fullscreen Optimizations can allow a game that presents itself as fullscreen to use a modern flip-model path behind the scenes. Conversely, a borderless option can still use a legacy presentation method if the game does not support the newer model.
Why Alt-Tab behaves differently
Display ownership and focus changes
In classic exclusive mode, the game owns the display while it has focus. Alt-Tab asks Windows to show another application, so the system may need to revoke that ownership, expose the desktop, and later restore the game’s display state. Any change in resolution, refresh rate, HDR state, or swap-chain configuration can make the handoff visible.

In borderless mode, the DWM already manages the game alongside other windows. Changing focus generally changes which window receives keyboard and mouse input rather than changing who controls the monitor. The handoff is therefore usually faster and less disruptive.
Why a black screen can appear
A black screen during an exclusive-mode Alt-Tab is commonly the visible part of a display transition. The game may be leaving one presentation surface, Windows may be restoring the desktop’s mode, and the game may later recreate or resize its surface when you return. The exact delay is title- and driver-dependent; there is no authoritative average time that applies to all games.

Overlays, recording controls, chat panels, and monitoring tools need to draw over or alongside the game. Borderless and optimized flip-model paths are designed to integrate with these desktop features. Classic exclusive mode can have more compatibility variation because the game has taken direct ownership of the display.

What Windows 11 changes
Fullscreen Optimizations
Fullscreen Optimizations were introduced to combine fullscreen-like behavior with the faster Alt-Tab and overlay integration associated with a modern windowed presentation. A game can appear to run fullscreen while Windows manages it through an optimized path rather than the older exclusive handoff.
This is why two games with identical “Fullscreen” menu labels can react differently to Alt-Tab. One may use a modern flip model; another may still expose legacy behavior or switch modes when focus changes.

Optimizations for windowed games
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles running in windowed or borderless modes. Microsoft says the feature can move games from the legacy blt-model presentation to the newer flip-model, reducing frame latency and enabling Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.

When a compatible game behaves poorly in borderless mode, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, choose its options, and check whether the windowed-game optimization is enabled. The feature cannot correct a game that does not support the required API or display capabilities, and it does not guarantee a particular frame rate or Alt-Tab time.
Direct3D 12 is a special case
Direct3D 12 does not support traditional fullscreen exclusive mode in the older sense. When a Direct3D 12 game is the only visible application, Windows uses Fullscreen Optimizations to achieve a similar fullscreen effect without the performance drawbacks associated with classic exclusive mode.
As a result, a Direct3D 12 game’s “fullscreen” option should not be interpreted as proof that the monitor is being controlled through the pre-Windows-10 exclusive path.
Which mode should you choose?
Use borderless windowed when Alt-Tab convenience is the priority
Start with borderless if you regularly switch to a browser, chat, documentation, a recording control, or a second monitor. It is also the sensible default when you want overlays to remain available or when you do not want the desktop to flash while focus changes.

Try exclusive fullscreen for a specific, observable fault
Use the game’s exclusive option only when borderless produces a problem you can reproduce. Examples include uneven frame pacing despite a stable frame-rate counter, a refresh rate that the game will not select in borderless, HDR or VRR behavior that is incorrect on your display, focus being lost when you return, or a game-specific compatibility issue.
Do not switch solely because an older guide says exclusive fullscreen is always faster. On modern Windows, a flip-model borderless path can match or exceed the practical performance of classic exclusive mode.
Keep the whole configuration in view
The best setting is determined by more than the mode selector. Consider the game’s DirectX version, Windows 10 or 11 build, graphics driver, monitor refresh rate, HDR state, VRR support, number of displays, overlay software, and whether the game pauses or minimizes when unfocused.
How to test Alt-Tab behavior in one game
A short, controlled comparison is more useful than assuming one mode will behave like another title.
- Record the baseline. Note the Windows version, game graphics API if the title shows it, monitor resolution and refresh rate, HDR and VRR state, and whether more than one monitor is connected.
- Use borderless windowed. Apply the setting, restart the game if it requests a restart, and load the same area or repeatable scene.
- Alt-Tab repeatedly. Switch to the same desktop application five or more times. Observe whether the desktop appears immediately, whether the game returns at the same resolution and refresh rate, and whether audio, input, overlays, and HDR remain correct.
- Check the unfocused state. Leave the game in the background briefly, then return. Record whether it pauses, minimizes, loses focus, or shows a black frame. These are implementation behaviors, not universal properties of borderless mode.
- Repeat in exclusive fullscreen. Keep every other setting unchanged. Use the same scene and the same target application for the Alt-Tab sequence.
- Compare frame delivery, not just the counter. Look for hitching or a changed refresh rate after returning. A mode that reports the same average FPS can still feel different if frame pacing or presentation latency changes.
- Choose the least disruptive result. If both modes are stable, keep borderless for easier desktop integration. Keep exclusive only when it fixes a concrete issue that matters to your play.
Troubleshooting common Alt-Tab problems
The screen turns black when you Alt-Tab
This is most associated with a display-ownership or presentation transition in classic exclusive mode. Test borderless first. If the game must remain fullscreen, make its resolution and refresh-rate choices match the desktop and check whether Windows Fullscreen Optimizations are handling the title. A black screen that occurs only in one game points to that game’s presentation path rather than to a universal Windows rule.

The game minimizes or does not return correctly
Some games deliberately minimize, pause, or recreate their rendering surface when they lose focus. Borderless reduces the need for a display handoff but cannot override a title’s own focus logic. Compare the game’s borderless and fullscreen settings, and check whether the problem follows the game regardless of mode. If it happens only in exclusive mode, borderless is the practical workaround.
Borderless feels less responsive
A legacy borderless implementation can add presentation latency, while a modern flip-model implementation is designed to reduce it. Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization can move compatible DirectX 10/11 games to that newer path. Because the result depends on the game and display, verify responsiveness in the exact title rather than assuming that every borderless mode adds lag.
HDR or VRR works in one mode but not the other
HDR and VRR availability depends on the API, Windows configuration, driver, display, and presentation model. On Windows 11, compatible DirectX 10/11 windowed games can receive Auto HDR and VRR support through Optimizations for windowed games. If a feature fails in borderless, test the title with that optimization enabled; if it fails in exclusive, test whether the game is actually using a modern optimized path rather than classic exclusive.

An overlay disappears or stops responding
Borderless and Fullscreen-Optimized paths are intended to cooperate with overlays. Classic exclusive mode can expose compatibility differences between the game and a particular overlay. If an overlay is essential, compare it after several Alt-Tab cycles and keep the mode in which it remains available without disrupting focus.
The second monitor behaves unexpectedly
Borderless is generally easier for moving focus to another monitor because the desktop continues to manage both displays. Exclusive mode can act like a display handoff when focus changes, and the exact result depends on the game and driver. Test the same cross-monitor action in both modes before deciding.
What cannot be predicted from the mode name
Platform documentation explains how presentation models are intended to work, but it does not establish a universal average Alt-Tab time, FPS difference, input-latency difference, crash rate, or percentage of games using each mode. Those figures would require title-specific testing under a stated Windows build, API, driver, display, and configuration.
Even the word “fullscreen” is ambiguous on current Windows. A Direct3D 12 title does not use traditional exclusive fullscreen, and compatible DirectX 10/11 games may be upgraded to flip-model presentation in windowed modes. Treat the selector as a starting point, then judge the behavior you can reproduce.
