If a relic unlock is not tracking in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies, the most reliable recovery is to update the game, restart it, and repeat the entire map setup, portal activation, and relic trial in one uninterrupted match. Do not use Save and Quit during the sequence. Relic progression has had several officially acknowledged bugs, so a missing unlock is not automatically a mistake on your part.
Why BO7 Zombies relic progress disappears
Relic unlocks combine several state-dependent steps: map-side preparation, a portal trigger, a trial, and an award that must appear in the post-trial interface. A failure at any point can make the relic look as though it never counted.
The largest recurring risk is saving and reloading. A current Zombies guide reports that relic progress is not persistent and that the side quest and trial must be completed in one sitting. Community reports also describe reloads resetting steps or leaving a later trigger in a broken state. In practical terms, a run that reaches the portal, saves, and then resumes may no longer satisfy the conditions that were active before the reload.
There is also a separate class of defects tied to particular relics or actions. Official patch notes have listed failures involving the Seed Relic, Focusing Stone, Blood Vials, Samantha’s Drawing, Golden Spork, Dragon Head, Rocket Relic, and the Bus Relic Trial. The installed game version therefore matters as much as the steps you perform.

Treyarch summarized the broader problem in its 2026 115 Day update: “We’re tracking some recent issues with a handful of Augments that worked previously but temporarily acted strangely, or just plain stopped working altogether.” Although that statement refers to Augments, it reflects the kind of temporary progression and functionality problems that have also affected Zombies systems.
Do this first: the clean recovery procedure
Use this procedure before spending time repeating only the final trial. It removes the most common variables in the order that matters.
- Update Black Ops 7. Install every available game and platform update. Several relic defects were fixed in Seasons 02 through 05, so an older build can reproduce a problem that no longer exists on the current version.
- Restart the game completely. Exit to the platform dashboard or desktop, close the game process, and launch it again. A menu-only return is not the same as a full restart if the client has retained a damaged session state.
- Start a fresh Zombies match. Do not resume a saved match for the recovery attempt. Begin the map-side setup from the start.
- Complete every prerequisite in order. Finish the map-side interactions required for the relic, activate the portal, and enter the associated trial. Avoid detours that could trigger a save or reload.
- Finish the trial without leaving the match. Complete the required objectives and wait for the game to show the relic award. For the Bus Relic Trial, for example, kills made with the Psych Grenade must be counted by the trial objective itself.
- Verify the unlock before exiting. Remain in the match until the relic award and the relevant menu update are visible. Only then leave the match normally.
This is a recovery procedure inferred from the documented non-persistence of relic steps and the reload failures reported by players. It is not a guarantee for a server-side defect, but it is the cleanest way to distinguish a reset run from a persistent game bug.

Fresh run versus Save and Quit

If you already used Save and Quit, repeating only the missing final objective is less reliable than restarting the complete sequence. A fresh run also gives support staff a clearer reproduction case if the issue remains.

Check whether your specific relic has a known fix
Official seasonal notes identify several trigger-specific failures. Match the symptom to the entry below rather than assuming every missing relic has the same cause.
Seed Relic: pistol Pack-a-Punch condition
Season 02 fixed a failure in which the Seed Relic portal could fail after the pistol had been Pack-a-Punched. If your portal never appears after that action, update first and repeat the sequence on the current build. On an unpatched build, changing the order of those actions may avoid the defect, but the durable remedy is installing the fix.
Focusing Stone: wine bottles do not appear
Season 02 also fixed Focusing Stone wine bottles not appearing. If the required bottles are absent even though the preceding setup is complete, check the build number before abandoning the run. Missing objects are different from an objective that fails to count after interaction.

Blood Vials: reload leaves the item unusable
Blood Vials could become non-functional after a reload; Season 02 listed a correction. A run that worked before Save and Quit but cannot use the vials afterward is consistent with that defect. Restart the sequence in a current, uninterrupted match.

Samantha’s Drawing: reload behavior
Season 02 included a fix for Samantha’s Drawing after reload, and Season 04 listed additional save-related progression fixes that included Samantha’s Drawing. If the drawing state is missing or refuses to advance after resuming a match, do not keep reloading the same save. Use a new match on the latest patch.
Golden Spork: trial progression
Season 02 fixed a Golden Spork trial progression defect. When the trial begins but its progression does not advance, confirm that the update containing the fix is installed. If it is, reproduce the trial from a clean run and record the exact objective that stops counting.
Dragon Head: portal failure after saving
Season 03 fixed a Dragon Head portal failure that could occur after saving. A portal that disappears or never activates following Save and Quit is therefore a known pattern, not proof that the map-side setup was completed incorrectly. A fresh run avoids the affected save transition.
Rocket Relic: Totenreich main-quest block
Season 03 fixed a Rocket Relic issue that could block the Totenreich main quest. If the relic appears to be the reason the main quest cannot continue, update before attempting workarounds. The problem may be progression state rather than a missed interaction.

Bus Relic Trial: Psych Grenade kills
Season 05 fixed a defect in which Psych Grenade kills failed to count during the Bus Relic Trial. On a current build, make sure the kills are performed while the trial objective is active and that the counter changes. If the counter remains at zero despite valid kills, capture the details and report it instead of repeatedly consuming equipment.

Patch notes describe fixes, not a promise that every future occurrence has the same cause. A current client can still encounter a new regression, so a clean reproduction remains important.
Solo, public Cursed, and lobby requirements
Choose the simplest lobby for your recovery attempt. Solo play removes coordination and ownership ambiguity, making it easier to tell whether the objective itself is working. A public match can introduce another variable if teammates activate, complete, or interrupt parts of the sequence.

That means the lobby does not necessarily require every participant to independently satisfy the same relic conditions. If a public match still behaves as though the requirement is missing, check that at least one player actually meets the qualification and that the current build includes the Season 03 handling.

Diagnose the exact point of failure
Before restarting again, identify which observable event is missing. This prevents a portal problem from being mistaken for a trial-counting problem.
- Setup never completes: Recheck the map-side interactions and note the last prompt or object that appeared.
- Portal does not spawn: Record the relic, the action immediately before the portal check, and whether the match was resumed from a save. Seed Relic and Dragon Head have had portal-specific fixes.
- Trial starts but the counter is frozen: Note the weapon, item, or enemy action involved. The Bus Relic Trial’s Psych Grenade counter is a documented example of a trigger-specific failure.
- Trial completes but no award appears: Stay in the match long enough to distinguish a delayed menu update from a missing award, then record the round and completion state.
- Award appears but the menu does not update: Do not assume the unlock is permanently lost. Restart the client, check the menu again, and compare the result with a second clean run.
- Only the resumed match fails: Treat Save and Quit as the leading variable and repeat from a fresh match.
Use screenshots or a short recording when possible. The useful evidence is the missing prompt, absent object, unchanged counter, or missing award—not merely a statement that the relic did not unlock.
What not to do when progress is missing
- Do not keep reloading the same save. Reload behavior is itself associated with several relic defects, so repeated attempts can preserve the broken state rather than repair it.
- Do not repeat only the final trial without the setup. The documented non-persistence means the game may require the portal and prerequisite state to be created again.
- Do not treat a missing object as a combat failure. Focusing Stone bottles and portal triggers require a different diagnosis from an objective counter that remains unchanged.
- Do not use an old patch as a control test. You may be reproducing a defect already fixed in Season 02, 03, 04, or 05.
- Do not buy another copy as a fix. A server-side or progression defect is not resolved by changing editions or marketplaces. Verify platform and edition requirements only if you do not already own the game.
When to report the problem to Activision
If an updated client fails during a fresh, uninterrupted run, use Activision’s official support hub and bug-report form. Activision directs players to submit issues that are not already listed on its known-issues page. Check the known-issues list first so your report can reference an existing entry when appropriate.

- Platform and game edition.
- Map and relic name.
- Installed game version or season update.
- Round at which the setup, portal, or trial failed.
- Exact step immediately before the failure.
- Whether Save and Quit or any reload was used.
- Whether the match was solo or a public Cursed lobby.
- What was missing: portal, object, prompt, counter increment, relic award, or menu update.
- Any error message, connection notice, or visible gameplay evidence.
State whether the same symptom occurred after a clean restart and a new match. That distinction separates a reproducible trigger from a single corrupted session and gives support a more useful test case.
How common is the wider Cursed mode?
Call of Duty and Treyarch reported in 2026 that 33% of Zombies players had tried Cursed. That figure describes participation in Cursed, not the percentage of players with relic failures; no reliable public statistic establishes the failure rate for relic-unlock tracking. Treat individual reports and patch notes as evidence of known defect patterns, not as a measurement of how often every player is affected.
Practical decision tree
- Is the game fully updated? If no, update and restart before testing.
- Was Save and Quit used? If yes, abandon that partial run and repeat the full sequence in a new match.
- Does the symptom match a named fix? Check Seed Relic, Focusing Stone, Blood Vials, Samantha’s Drawing, Golden Spork, Dragon Head, Rocket Relic, and Bus Relic Trial entries above.
- Is the lobby public Cursed? Confirm that one qualified player supplies the relic requirement under the Season 03 rule, or reproduce the issue solo.
- Does a clean run still fail? Capture the exact failure point and submit it through Activision’s bug-report route.
The key distinction is between a reset sequence and a current-build defect. A fresh match removes the known save variable; patch-specific checks then narrow the remaining possibilities to a relic trigger, lobby condition, or newly introduced regression.
