BMW’s Personal Pilot L3 is a genuine SAE Level 3 driving system, but it is not an all-purpose self-driving mode. On approved German motorways, it can take over steering, acceleration and braking at speeds up to 60 km/h. In eligible cars, the driver may briefly turn attention to in-car activities—but must be fit to drive and ready to take control when prompted.
What BMW means by Level 3
The difference between Level 2 and Level 3 is who performs the driving task and who must monitor the road. With Level 2 assistance, the driver remains responsible for watching traffic and must be ready to intervene. With Level 3, the automated system performs the driving task while the car is operating within its defined conditions; the driver must take over when the system requests it.
BMW describes Personal Pilot L3 as allowing activities such as making calls, reading, writing messages or using in-car entertainment during a traffic jam. These are secondary in-car activities, not permission to ignore a takeover request or leave the driving position. BMW says the driver must hold a valid licence and be fit to drive. Personal Pilot L3 and Highway Assistant are different systems
The 7 Series can combine BMW’s Level 3 Personal Pilot L3 with its separate Level 2 Highway Assistant. The two systems have different speed limits and driver responsibilities; the higher speed figure belongs to Level 2, not Level 3.

Where Personal Pilot L3 works—and where it does not
BMW’s product information specifies approved German motorways and a maximum of 60 km/h. That makes Personal Pilot L3 a narrowly defined system, not a feature for every road, country or speed. BMW separately said its hands-free Level 2 Motorway Assistant had been available since March 2024 in Germany, Canada and the United States on the 7 Series, X5, X6, X7, XM and iX. How to check whether a BMW has it
- Check the specific car’s equipment and market eligibility; BMW does not present Personal Pilot L3 as universally available across vehicles.
- Use BMW ConnectedDrive to check whether the feature is available for that individual vehicle and to activate it if eligible.
- Before using it, confirm that the drive is on an approved German motorway and within the system’s speed and operating conditions.
- While engaged, follow the car’s instructions and take control when requested. Remain licensed and fit to drive.
Price and safety information
BMW’s November 2023 announcement gave a launch price of €6,000 including VAT for the Germany-only Personal Pilot L3 option at that time. That is a historical launch price, not a confirmed current price: BMW’s current product page does not show a universal price, and eligibility is vehicle-specific. BMW’s cited product and roadmap information describes operating conditions and approval, but does not provide an independent crash-rate, disengagement-rate or quantified safety-improvement figure for Personal Pilot L3. Approval and automation level alone therefore do not establish a numerical safety advantage.
