Choose Bluetooth speakers for convenience, fewer signal cables, and a phone- or tablet-based setup. Choose a wired connection for a fixed TV or projector setup when predictable audio delivery, lip sync, or support for particular formats and ports matters more. Neither connection type guarantees better sound: the speaker itself and compatibility with your source are just as important.
What “wired speakers” means
A wired speaker connection can mean different things. A powered speaker has its own amplification and may accept an analog or digital cable directly from a source. Passive speakers generally need an amplifier in the system. Check the actual inputs on the speaker and outputs on the source; the word “wired” alone does not tell you whether they will connect.
Bluetooth and wired inputs can also coexist on one speaker. For example, Audioengine describes its B2 as a powered stereo speaker with Bluetooth aptX and a wired analog input for turntables, tape decks, and other analog sources. The manufacturer also says it supports SBC and AAC Bluetooth connections when a source does not support aptX. Audioengine B2 details illustrate a hybrid design, not a recommendation that this particular model suits every setup.
Bluetooth vs. wired at a glance
| What matters | Bluetooth | Wired connection |
|---|---|---|
| TV and projector lip sync | Can introduce latency; performance depends on the source, speaker, and app. Check for sync controls and compatibility. | Often preferable when available for reducing sync concerns; confirm the ports and audio formats both devices support. |
| Compatibility | Source and speaker need a codec in common. A codec listed on just one device does not ensure it will be used. | Depends on matching physical inputs and outputs and, for digital connections, supported formats. |
| Range | Wireless, but actual range varies; walls and their materials can shorten it. | Limited by cable length and routing, rather than a wireless link. |
| Convenience | Fewer signal cables and easier placement changes; useful with phones and tablets. | Requires a cable and workable routing, but can suit equipment that stays in one place. |
| Power and portability | Bluetooth removes the audio signal cable, not necessarily the need for power. Check whether the speaker is battery-powered or must be plugged in. | Powered speakers need power; passive speakers normally require an amplifier. Check the actual system requirements. |
| Sound | Depends on speaker design, codec, source, and listening conditions. | Depends on speaker design, source, connection, and supported formats; a cable by itself does not guarantee superior sound. |
When Bluetooth is the better fit
- You mainly play audio from a phone or tablet and want to avoid running a signal cable.
- You want to move the speaker or change its placement without rerouting that cable.
- Your source and speaker support a compatible Bluetooth codec and their measured performance suits your use.
Bluetooth sends encoded audio data from a source to a receiving device, which decodes it for playback. The devices use a codec they share; if they do not share a more advanced option, they may fall back to a common one. Bluetooth can involve compression, latency, and format or channel limits compared with wired or HDMI audio, but those connection characteristics do not mean every wired speaker sounds better than every Bluetooth speaker. TCL’s Bluetooth audio explanation describes the process and trade-offs.

Check codec support at both ends
For Bluetooth Classic, the source and receiver need a supported codec in common, and the codec selected may not be the highest one that both devices support. Bluetooth LE Audio uses LC3 and is separate from Bluetooth Classic; the two are not directly compatible. Confirm end-to-end support rather than relying on a codec badge on just the source or speaker. Sennheiser’s explanation of Bluetooth audio was updated April 13, 2026.
Expect range to depend on the room
There is no fixed indoor range that applies to every Bluetooth speaker. RTINGS tests range in direct line of sight and notes that obstacles, including walls and their materials, can reduce it. Its published methodology calls 145 ft (44.2 m) a good range value under its test framing; that is an evaluation benchmark, not a promise for a particular room or product. See RTINGS’ Bluetooth connectivity methodology.

When a wired connection is the safer choice
For a television or projector that stays in place, a wired or HDMI connection is often the safer starting point if lip sync, supported audio formats, or predictable delivery matters. TCL describes wired or HDMI options as preferable for lip sync and sound quality when available. Before choosing a cable, confirm the source’s output, the speaker or amplifier’s input, and support for the audio format you intend to use.
Bluetooth latency varies by devices and apps. RTINGS tests iOS and Android separately, and warns that apps and devices can compensate for latency differently. Its “under 150 ms” figure is a good-value evaluation benchmark, not a guarantee that every viewer will see perfectly synchronized audio and video. RTINGS’ test description explains its separate latency tests and their limits.

Projector lip sync: check settings and alternatives
If a projector’s picture and Bluetooth audio do not line up, check for audio-delay or lip-sync controls on the source and speaker, if available, and inspect the wired connection options on both devices. BenQ recommends wired speakers to avoid Bluetooth sync issues on the projector models listed in its support answer. It says those projectors support SBC and suggests aptX or aptX-LL devices, or a wired connection, as possible remedies; an alternative codec helps only if the source and speaker both support it. The support page, dated June 13, 2022, notes that encoding and decoding introduce delay: “This results from the process of encoding and decoding audio and is unavoidable.” See BenQ’s projector Bluetooth lip-sync FAQ.
Some speakers let you trade sound quality for connection stability
Bluetooth settings can affect both codec choice and connection behavior. Sony’s SRS-XE300 guide documents a sound-quality priority that uses AAC, LDAC, or SBC, and a stable-connection priority that uses SBC. Sony warns that sound interruption may occur in sound-quality priority depending on the source-device settings and environment. This is a product-specific example: check the settings and supported codecs for the speaker you own. Sony SRS-XE300 codec settings.

Choose based on your setup
- Identify the source. For a phone or tablet and flexible placement, Bluetooth may be the simplest fit. For a fixed TV or projector, first check wired and HDMI options if lip sync or formats are important.
- Check both devices’ connections. For Bluetooth, confirm codec compatibility at both ends. For a cable, match the source output to the speaker or amplifier input and verify any format requirements.
- Account for the room and placement. Bluetooth range can fall when walls or other obstacles intervene. A wired setup instead needs a practical cable route and, for passive speakers, an amplifier.
- Verify the speaker’s requirements. Find out whether it needs mains power, has a battery, includes amplification, or needs a separate amplifier. A wireless audio link does not necessarily mean a portable, self-powered speaker.
- Test the detail that matters most. For video, check lip sync with the content and app you actually use. For a Bluetooth speaker, listen from the intended position and check for interruptions. For a wired setup, confirm that the connection works with your source’s output settings.
Bottom line
Bluetooth is usually best when easy pairing, fewer signal cables, and movable placement matter most. Wired audio is usually the safer choice for a stationary TV or projector when lip sync, format support, and a predictable connection take priority. Compare the specific source and speaker—not just their Bluetooth or wired labels—before deciding.
