Bluehost does offer Windows hosting, but not on every product or in every customer account. Its help documentation updated July 5, 2026 says Windows is available on select shared and dedicated packages. If your application needs ASP.NET, classic ASP, Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL), MS Access, Visual Basic or C#, you must confirm that a Windows package is available for your region before buying or planning a migration. A PHP/MySQL site usually has no such requirement and is normally better served by Linux hosting.
The conflicting “Windows hosting is unavailable” advice comes from an older Bluehost compatibility article describing a Linux Apache, MySQL and PHP (LAMP) environment that did not support ASP.NET or MS Access. That guidance can still appear in search results, but it should not be treated as a blanket description of Bluehost’s current catalog.
Does Bluehost support Windows hosting now?
Yes, according to Bluehost’s official Windows/Linux comparison updated July 5, 2026. The documentation says Windows hosting is offered on select shared and dedicated hosting packages. “Select” is important: the operating system is tied to the product and package, and availability may also vary by country or account region. A Windows option visible to one customer is not proof that the same option will appear in your checkout.

Why do search results say Bluehost Windows hosting is unavailable?
The most common cause is a legacy support page. Bluehost’s older ASP.NET/MS Access compatibility article describes a Linux stack built from Apache, MySQL and PHP. That environment does not run ASP.NET or MS Access and the page tells customers to “Move your content to a host that provides Windows-based services.” The statement accurately describes that Linux environment, but it is not equivalent to saying that every Bluehost product has always lacked Windows hosting.
Product names, regional catalogs and control panels can also change. A customer may see only Linux plans in an existing account while a new customer, or a customer in another region, sees a Windows package. Treat the current package selector and written confirmation from Bluehost as authoritative for your account; do not rely on an old comparison page, a cached search snippet or another customer’s dashboard.
When do you actually need Windows hosting?
Windows hosting is required when the application depends on Microsoft server software that is not available in the Linux environment you are considering. Bluehost identifies classic ASP, ASP.NET, MSSQL, MS Access, Visual Basic and C# as Windows-specific use cases. Microsoft’s ASP.NET hosting guidance likewise describes Windows hosting with IIS and identifies WebhostforASP.NET as a Windows and ASP.NET provider.

| Application or stack | Usual hosting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| ASP.NET on IIS, including applications tied to the .NET Framework | Windows | Requires the Windows/IIS runtime and, for many legacy applications, the .NET Framework rather than a Linux-compatible runtime. |
| Classic ASP | Windows | Classic ASP is an IIS-era Microsoft technology. |
| MSSQL or an application that depends on Microsoft SQL Server features | Windows is commonly the safest fit | Confirm the host’s SQL Server edition, version, database count, storage and connection limits; “Windows” alone does not guarantee a particular MSSQL service. |
| MS Access used as a web application database | Windows | Verify that the provider permits Access databases and supplies the required IIS/driver configuration. |
| Visual Basic or C# server application | Usually Windows | Check whether the application targets classic .NET Framework, modern .NET, or another runtime before selecting a plan. |
| WordPress, PHP, MySQL or MariaDB | Usually Linux | Bluehost says Linux is the better fit for common PHP/MySQL workloads and provides cPanel there. |
A Windows desktop is not a technical requirement. You can develop on Windows and deploy a PHP site to Linux, or develop on macOS and deploy an ASP.NET application to Windows. The deciding factors are the server runtime, web server, database engine, extensions and deployment process.
Bluehost Windows and Linux hosting compared
| Characteristic | Bluehost Windows package | Bluehost Linux package |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | ASP.NET, classic ASP, MSSQL, MS Access and other Microsoft-dependent applications | PHP/MySQL websites and other Linux-compatible stacks |
| Control panel identified by Bluehost | Plesk | cPanel |
| Web-server/runtime direction | Windows Server and IIS-oriented hosting; exact version is package-specific and should be confirmed before purchase | Linux, Apache/PHP-oriented hosting in the legacy compatibility description |
| Availability | Select shared and dedicated packages; region and account can affect what is offered | Broadly available in Bluehost’s standard catalog, subject to the selected product |
| Database expectation | Ask specifically about MSSQL or Access limits rather than assuming they are included | MySQL is the database named in Bluehost’s Linux compatibility description |
Control-panel preference can matter, but it should come after runtime compatibility. Plesk is useful for IIS, Windows sites and Microsoft databases; cPanel is familiar to many PHP and WordPress administrators. A panel cannot make an incompatible runtime work, so verify the framework and database first.
How to check whether a Bluehost Windows plan is available to you
- Inventory the application. Record the framework (classic ASP, ASP.NET Framework, ASP.NET Core or another runtime), target version, required IIS modules, scheduled tasks, file-write locations and database engine.
- Check the current Bluehost plan selector while signed out and signed in. Look for an explicit Windows, Windows Server or Plesk designation. The absence of a label such as “Windows” or “Plesk” usually indicates that the displayed package is Linux.
- Open the package details, not just the marketing headline. Confirm the supported Windows Server version, IIS features, ASP.NET/.NET Framework compatibility, MSSQL or Access availability, database limits, storage, bandwidth, backups and SSL terms.
- Confirm regional eligibility. If the Windows package is missing, contact Bluehost sales or support with your country, domain and required technologies. Ask whether the package can be attached to your existing account or whether a new account is required.
- Request migration details in writing. Ask what Bluehost will migrate, whether MSSQL or Access databases are included, whether there is a migration charge, which control panel the destination uses and how DNS cutover is handled.
- Test before committing. For a business application, obtain a temporary hostname or staging location and deploy a copy. Test login, uploads, background jobs, email, database procedures, URL rewriting, scheduled tasks and any third-party integrations.
If support cannot confirm the operating system and database service for the exact package, treat the plan as unverified and compare a provider that publishes those details clearly.

Bluehost-named alternatives for Windows and ASP.NET
Bluehost’s article “Best Windows Web Hosting 2026: Top 5 Providers Compared,” published February 27, 2026, listed the following starting prices as current in January 2026. These are provider-reported snapshots, not October 2026 quotes. Promotional periods, renewal prices, taxes, currency conversion and regional availability can change the amount you see at checkout.
| Provider | January 2026 starting price | Positioning in Bluehost’s comparison | Windows features stated by Bluehost | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| InterServer | $8.00 per month | Beginner-friendly Windows ASP.NET shared hosting | Up to 25 sites, unlimited space and bandwidth, free SSL, daily backups and Plesk | Windows Server version, ASP.NET/.NET Framework versions, MSSQL limits, support scope, data-center location and renewal price were not stated in the January 2026 table. |
| Liquid Web | $86.50 per month | Premium managed Windows/ASP.NET VPS for enterprise users | Cloud and dedicated options, Microsoft SQL hosting and Active Directory options | Exact CPU, memory, storage, database limits, backup retention, migration assistance, data-center choice and renewal terms were not stated in the table. |

| Hostwinds | $14.94 per month | Scalable Windows hosting | Plesk and several Windows Server versions | Identify the exact Server edition, ASP.NET and MSSQL support, included resources, backup frequency, migration help and renewal price. |
| AccuWeb Hosting | $3.49 per month | Technical-user option | Plesk and broad Windows Server version coverage | Verify framework versions, SQL options and limits, backups, support response, data-center geography and the post-introduction price. |
The table compares the information Bluehost published; it is not an independent performance test. No authoritative uptime, speed or market-share comparison is established here. Select a provider on compatibility, operational support and total cost rather than on the lowest introductory number.
How to choose among the alternatives
InterServer for a small, straightforward ASP.NET site
InterServer’s listed Windows shared plan is the most conventional starting point for a beginner who needs Plesk and wants to host several small sites. The stated allowance is up to 25 sites with unlimited space and bandwidth, daily backups and free SSL. “Unlimited” does not remove CPU, memory, file-count or fair-use limits, so ask for those constraints before moving a busy application. Confirm whether your application targets the .NET Framework version offered and whether MSSQL is included or billed separately.

Liquid Web for managed infrastructure and Microsoft integrations
Liquid Web is positioned at the high end, with a January 2026 starting price of $86.50 per month and managed Windows/ASP.NET VPS services. Bluehost’s comparison also names cloud, dedicated, Microsoft SQL and Active Directory options. That combination is relevant to organizations that need domain integration or a controlled server environment, but the starting figure does not tell you the final cost of licensing, backups, extra storage or a larger instance. Obtain a written configuration and renewal quote.
IONOS for a low entry price with Windows Server 2022
IONOS is listed at $6.00 per month and explicitly supports ASP.NET, ASP.NET Ajax, MVC and Microsoft SQL on Windows Server 2022. It is a plausible budget choice when the application fits the advertised version and resource limits. Check whether the plan supports your required .NET Framework release, SQL edition, connection count and backup retention; a low introductory price is not evidence that a production workload will fit.

Hostwinds for growth across Windows Server versions
Hostwinds is listed at $14.94 per month and is positioned for scalability, with Plesk and several Windows Server versions. Multiple Server choices can help when an older application cannot yet move to a newer operating system. Ask which versions are available on shared hosting versus VPS, whether you can change versions later, and how migration, backups and resource upgrades work.

AccuWeb Hosting for administrators who want broad version choice
AccuWeb’s listed starting price is $3.49 per month, with Plesk and broad Windows Server version coverage. Bluehost positions it toward technical users. Before choosing the lowest-cost option, validate SQL licensing, database limits, scheduled-task support, outbound email rules, backup restoration and the support channel available for IIS or application-level problems.
Moving an ASP.NET site from Bluehost
A migration is feasible, but the destination must support the application’s exact runtime and database—not merely “Windows” in the plan name. Use this sequence to reduce downtime:
- Freeze the requirements. Record the target framework, IIS modules, connection strings, authentication method, URL rewrite rules, scheduled jobs, file permissions, upload directories and external services.
- Build a complete backup. Export the site files, configuration, certificates, user-uploaded content and database. For MSSQL, use a backup or scripted export that the destination accepts; for Access, copy the database only after stopping writes.
- Lower DNS time to live ahead of the move. Reduce the domain’s TTL before cutover so resolvers can refresh the destination sooner. The exact timing depends on your DNS provider’s current TTL and resolver caching.
- Create the destination site. Select the required Windows Server and ASP.NET/.NET Framework versions, create the IIS site and application pool, configure bindings and install the database using the provider’s documented method.
- Deploy without changing public DNS. Upload the application, restore the database, set environment-specific connection strings and secrets, and apply least-privilege file permissions. Use a temporary hostname, hosts-file override or provider staging feature when available.
- Run an application test matrix. Test authentication, session state, forms, uploads, downloads, background tasks, email, payment or API callbacks, database transactions, reports, redirects and error handling. Check both clean and existing-user scenarios.
- Synchronize final data. Put the old site into maintenance or read-only mode, take a final database backup, restore it to the destination and verify row counts or application-specific checksums.
- Change DNS and monitor. Point the relevant A, CNAME and mail records to the new service, then watch logs, error rates, queue processing and user reports while caches expire.
- Keep the old service temporarily. Do not cancel Bluehost until DNS propagation, HTTPS, email and application behavior are stable and you have a verified rollback copy.
Migration assistance varies by provider and package. Ask specifically whether the service includes ASP.NET files, MSSQL databases, Access files, DNS changes and post-cutover troubleshooting; a “free migration” promise may cover only a subset of those items.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon failure modes and fixes
- Only Linux plans appear: Your region or current product may not offer Windows. Confirm eligibility with Bluehost; do not upload an ASP.NET application to a Linux plan expecting a control-panel setting to add IIS.
- The plan says Windows but the framework will not start: Check the installed ASP.NET/.NET Framework version, application-pool mode, 32-bit requirement and IIS modules. A Windows Server label does not guarantee every legacy framework.
- Database connection errors occur after migration: Confirm the SQL Server hostname, port, credentials, encryption settings, firewall rules, database compatibility level and allowed remote connections. Replace the old connection string only after testing.
- Uploads or scheduled jobs fail: Review IIS identity permissions, directory write access, request-size limits and task-scheduler support. Shared hosting may restrict background processes even when the application itself runs.
- HTTPS or redirects break: Recreate bindings and certificates on the destination, then check URL-rewrite rules for server-specific syntax. Test HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects and canonical hostnames after DNS changes.
- Email stops working: Recheck SMTP credentials, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and whether the provider blocks outbound SMTP. Website migration and mail migration are separate tasks.
Which option is right for your situation?
- Choose Bluehost Windows when the exact Windows package is visible or confirmed for your region, its ASP.NET/MSSQL requirements match your application and you prefer to keep services with Bluehost.
- Choose Linux Bluehost hosting for PHP/MySQL, WordPress and other Linux-compatible sites. Windows is not an advantage for a site whose stack does not use Microsoft server technologies.
- Choose InterServer or IONOS when a small application needs a lower-cost Windows entry point and fits the published compatibility limits.
- Choose Hostwinds when version choice and a path to larger resources matter more than the lowest introductory price.
- Choose Liquid Web when managed VPS, dedicated capacity, Microsoft SQL or Active Directory integration justify a higher starting cost.
- Choose AccuWeb when you are comfortable validating technical details yourself and need broad Windows Server version coverage.
Before ordering any provider, obtain the exact Windows Server edition, ASP.NET/.NET Framework support, SQL database limits, backup and restore terms, migration scope, data-center location, support model and renewal price. Those details determine whether the application will run reliably; the operating-system label alone does not.
Bottom line
Bluehost Windows hosting is not universally unavailable in 2026. Bluehost says Windows is offered on select shared and dedicated packages, while Linux remains the normal choice for PHP/MySQL sites. The old Linux-only ASP.NET guidance explains the contradictory search results. If you need ASP.NET, classic ASP, MSSQL, MS Access, Visual Basic or C#, verify a Windows/Plesk package for your region and test the exact runtime before committing. If Bluehost cannot provide that package, the January 2026 alternatives named in its comparison—InterServer, Liquid Web, IONOS, Hostwinds and AccuWeb—cover beginner, enterprise, budget, scalable and technical-user profiles, but their live prices and limits must be checked at checkout.
