Yes, Bluehost supports Docker on its self-managed VPS plans. You receive full root access and a clean server on which you choose the operating system packages, Docker Engine, Compose, Kubernetes, firewall, images, backups and monitoring. That flexibility is useful for developers and operators who want control, but it is not the same as a managed container service: Bluehost does not perform your container updates, hardening or incident response for you.
For most small production stacks, NVMe 4 is the practical starting point because it provides 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of DDR5 RAM and 100 GB of NVMe storage. NVMe 2 can run a light service or development sandbox. NVMe 8 and NVMe 16 add the CPU and memory headroom needed by larger databases, multiple services, AI workloads or sustained concurrency. Promotional prices are term-equivalents charged in advance; renewal prices are materially higher on the two largest plans.

What Bluehost Docker hosting actually is
Bluehost’s Docker offer is a conventional self-managed virtual private server marketed as a Docker-ready environment. The product language promises that you can “build, ship, and scale docker containers your way.” In practical terms, you get an isolated VPS with root privileges rather than a dashboard that manages individual containers for you.
Root access lets you install Docker Engine, Docker Compose, Kubernetes or another runtime, select your Linux packages, configure networking and decide how images are built and stored. The server starts as a clean slate. You are therefore responsible for every layer above the virtual machine:

- Firewall rules, SSH keys, least-privilege users and exposed ports.
- Container deployments, health checks, logs, monitoring and alerting.
- Backups, restore testing, capacity planning and performance tuning.
This distinction answers the common question “Does Bluehost support Docker?”: the infrastructure permits Docker and related tools, but the service is self-managed rather than a managed container platform.
Plans, resources and renewal pricing
The following figures are from Bluehost’s US pricing page. They are promotional term-equivalents, not month-to-month charges. The selected term is charged in advance, and VAT or GST may be excluded depending on your location. Confirm the checkout total and term before purchasing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Plan | CPU | Memory | Storage | Advertised introductory price | Renewal price | Docker-oriented use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVMe 2 | 1 vCPU | 2 GB DDR5 | 50 GB NVMe | $4.69/month equivalent on a 24-month term | $5.69/month | Light personal service, development sandbox or very small container |
| NVMe 4 | 2 vCPUs | 4 GB DDR5 | 100 GB NVMe | $9.49/month equivalent on a 24-month term | $11.99/month | Several services, a reverse proxy and a small database |
| NVMe 8 | 4 vCPUs | 8 GB DDR5 | 200 GB NVMe | $12.99/month introductory | $28.99/month | Multi-container production, heavier databases or sustained concurrency |
| NVMe 16 | 8 vCPUs | 16 GB DDR5 | 450 GB NVMe | $25.99/month introductory | $49.99/month | Large container sets, demanding databases or AI workloads |
The price difference at renewal matters most on NVMe 8 and NVMe 16. Budget using the renewal figure for any service you expect to keep, and treat the initial term price as a temporary acquisition rate. Because the first payment covers the chosen term in advance, compare the total checkout charge—not only the displayed monthly equivalent—with your cash-flow requirements.
Which plan is best for Docker?
NVMe 2: development and low-duty services
One vCPU and 2 GB of RAM can support a small web container, a personal automation service or a test environment when traffic and background jobs are modest. You will have little room for a database, build process and monitoring stack to compete at the same time. Keep images lean, cap container memory and avoid treating this tier as a general-purpose production cluster.
NVMe 4: the sensible baseline
NVMe 4 doubles the CPU and memory of NVMe 2 and provides 100 GB of storage. Bluehost explicitly labels this tier for “Docker, AI agents, and growing applications.” The extra headroom is useful for a reverse proxy, two or three application services, a small database and basic observability without immediately exhausting RAM. It is the most balanced choice when you need a real multi-container deployment but do not yet have heavy concurrency.

NVMe 8: production headroom
Four vCPUs and 8 GB of RAM give schedulers, databases, workers and application containers more room to run concurrently. Choose this level when a single VPS will host several customer-facing services, a database with a larger working set, background queues or CPU-intensive image and data processing. Its renewal price is substantially above the introductory rate, so the extra capacity should correspond to a measurable workload requirement.
NVMe 16: demanding workloads
NVMe 16 provides 8 vCPUs, 16 GB of RAM and 450 GB of NVMe storage. It is the appropriate starting point for a dense container host, a heavier database, AI-related services or sustained concurrency that would leave NVMe 8 near saturation. This tier still does not remove operational work: more capacity can increase the blast radius of a misconfigured deployment and the renewal price is $49.99 per month.
A simple sizing test
- List every container, including databases, queues, reverse proxies, metrics and log collectors.
- Estimate each service’s normal and peak memory use, then reserve RAM for the operating system and Docker itself.
- Count CPU-heavy jobs such as builds, video or image processing, embedding generation and scheduled workers.
- Estimate image, database, upload, backup and log growth against the NVMe allowance.
- Select the smallest plan that leaves observable headroom at peak load, then reassess from metrics rather than guessing.
How to install Docker on the VPS
Bluehost does not prescribe a single operating system or software stack. The exact package commands therefore depend on the Linux distribution you select. The safe sequence is the same across supported distributions: secure root access first, patch the host, install Docker from the distribution’s current Docker documentation, and verify that the daemon starts after reboot.
- Choose an operating system and access method. Record the image version, server address and recovery path. Use SSH keys instead of a password where the control panel allows it, and create a non-root administrator account for routine work.
- Patch the host before exposing services. Apply all available security updates, set the correct time zone and confirm that you can reconnect after a reboot.
- Install Docker Engine and Compose. Follow the repository instructions for your chosen distribution. Install the Compose plugin rather than copying an unverified binary, then check the installed versions with
docker versionanddocker compose version. - Enable and test the daemon. Start Docker through the system service manager, enable it at boot and run a disposable test container. Confirm that the container can reach only the networks and ports it actually needs.
- Apply host and Docker firewall rules. Allow SSH only from the networks you administer when possible, open HTTP and HTTPS through the reverse proxy, and keep database, Docker API and internal service ports private.
- Deploy from a version-controlled Compose file. Pin image tags or digests, place secrets outside the image, define restart policies and health checks, and set explicit CPU, memory and log-rotation limits.
- Test recovery. Reboot the VPS, verify that the daemon and required containers return, restore a database backup to a separate location and document the rollback procedure.
These steps are operational guidance rather than a promise that every command is identical on every image. Package names, firewall tooling and service paths vary by distribution; use the documentation for the operating system you selected and verify the result after each change.
Running Docker Compose
Compose is a good fit for a small, repeatable application stack on one VPS. Keep the file in version control and separate production secrets from the repository. A typical deployment workflow is:

- Upload or pull the reviewed Compose project to a release directory.
- Validate the file with
docker compose configbefore changing the running stack. - Pull the exact image versions you approved.
- Apply the change with
docker compose up -d, then inspect container health and logs. - Check the reverse proxy, application endpoint and database migrations from outside the VPS.
- Retain the previous image tags and Compose revision so you can roll back quickly.
Compose does not provide high availability by itself. A single VPS remains a single failure domain, so plan backups, restore drills and a documented rebuild path even when the containers are stateless.
Can you run Kubernetes?
Root access allows you to install Kubernetes or another orchestrator, but technical possibility is not the same as a sensible production design. A single Bluehost VPS can be useful for learning, local integration or a small single-node cluster. A reliable multi-node Kubernetes control plane needs separate failure domains, additional memory and a networking and storage plan; placing every node on one VPS does not create high availability.
For a Kubernetes experiment, account for control-plane overhead before sizing application pods, restrict the API server to trusted networks, use persistent-volume backups and test node replacement. If the objective is simply to run a few services on one machine, Compose is usually less operationally complex.
Security and maintenance responsibilities
Self-management gives you control and also makes you the security administrator. Before putting a container on the public internet:
- Disable direct root login where practical and use individual SSH keys.
- Patch the operating system, Docker Engine, Compose plugin and application images on a schedule.
- Expose only the ports required by the reverse proxy and administration workflow.
- Use TLS, rotate secrets and avoid embedding credentials in images or Compose files.
- Pin trusted image versions, review image changes and remove unused images and containers.
- Capture host, container, access and application logs with rotation so a full disk does not stop the stack.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk, inode usage, container restarts and certificate expiry.
- Keep encrypted off-server backups and regularly prove that they can be restored.
Root access also means a faulty command can affect the entire VPS. A staging project, infrastructure-as-code configuration and a tested rollback are more valuable than simply choosing a larger plan.

Bandwidth, resource-use terms and uptime
Bluehost advertises unmetered bandwidth, multiple data centers and a 99.99% uptime SLA for the VPS offering. “Unmetered” does not mean unlimited use without conditions. The Docker page says customers must not use 25% or more of system resources for longer than 90 seconds. Design sustained workloads—such as workers, builds, media processing and AI jobs—so they remain within the provider’s resource-use terms, and check the current SLA for its measurement and exclusions.
The SLA is a provider availability commitment, not a guarantee that your application will respond quickly. A crashed process, exhausted disk, bad firewall rule or failed deployment can make your service unavailable even while the underlying VPS is reachable. Your monitoring and recovery process remain necessary.
What the available performance evidence does—and does not—show
An independent TechRadar VPS review published in 2026 evaluated plans, infrastructure and benchmark performance, but the available review excerpt does not report a Docker-specific benchmark number. There is therefore no defensible container throughput, latency or build-time figure to quote for these VPS plans.
A separate TechRadar review from October 2026 measured Bluehost shared hosting, not Docker VPS. It reported a WordPress Benchmark score of 7.9, availability above 95% at 5, 9 and 15 concurrent visitors, and average response time rising from 0.41 seconds to 2.61 seconds at the highest load. Those are shared-hosting results and must not be used to predict container performance. If latency or throughput is important, benchmark your own image, database, region and workload on the exact plan you intend to keep.
Self-managed versus managed VPS
| Consideration | Self-managed Bluehost VPS | Managed VPS approach |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full root access and freedom to choose Docker, Compose, Kubernetes and the host stack | Provider assistance may constrain some software or configuration choices |
| Routine work | You install, patch, monitor, back up and tune the host and containers | Provider typically assists with setup and security updates, depending on the plan |
| Customization | Highest; you define firewall, images, orchestration and deployment process | Lower if the provider standardizes the environment |
| Operational risk | Errors and missed patches are your responsibility | Some operational burden is transferred for a higher price |
| Best fit | Developers or teams comfortable administering Linux and Docker | Owners who value reduced maintenance more than maximum control |
Choose managed service only when the reduction in operational work justifies its premium and the available controls still meet your application needs. Choose self-managed Bluehost VPS when root-level customization, container choice and direct administration matter more than hands-off support.

Common pitfalls and fixes
Buying on the introductory price alone
Symptom: the renewal invoice is unexpectedly high. Fix: record the renewal price before checkout, budget for it from the start and compare the 12-month cost at renewal with alternatives you are genuinely willing to operate.
Recommended Free Tools
Under-sizing memory
Symptom: containers restart, the kernel invokes the out-of-memory killer or database latency spikes during builds. Fix: inspect memory and swap behavior, cap build and worker processes, move nonessential jobs elsewhere or resize to a plan with more RAM.
Exposing internal ports
Symptom: a database, Docker API or admin panel is reachable from the internet. Fix: bind internal services to private interfaces, close unnecessary firewall rules and route public traffic through a hardened reverse proxy.
Treating one VPS as high availability
Symptom: one host failure takes down every service. Fix: maintain off-server backups, automate rebuilds and decide whether the workload needs multiple independent hosts rather than only a larger VPS.
Assuming “unmetered” removes limits
Symptom: a sustained job approaches the provider’s resource-use threshold. Fix: profile the workload, schedule heavy jobs, apply container limits and confirm compliance with the current terms before scaling traffic.
Who should buy Bluehost VPS for Docker?
- Good fit: developers deploying a few services, teams that need root access, agencies hosting isolated projects, and operators comfortable with Linux patching and backups.
- Use caution: businesses without an on-call administrator, workloads requiring provider-managed security, or applications that cannot tolerate a single-host outage.
- Plan match: NVMe 2 for a light sandbox, NVMe 4 for a small production stack, NVMe 8 for heavier multi-container use, and NVMe 16 for dense or demanding workloads.
Final assessment
Bluehost is a credible low-cost place to run Docker when you want a blank VPS, root access and freedom to choose your tooling. NVMe 4 is the most broadly sensible starting point, while NVMe 2 is best kept for light workloads and NVMe 8 or NVMe 16 should be justified by measured CPU, memory, storage or concurrency needs. The central trade-off is operational: Bluehost supplies the virtual infrastructure, but you supply the Docker administration, security, backups, monitoring and recovery. Evaluate the renewal price and your ability to operate Linux before treating the introductory offer as a production budget.
