Bluehost is still a practical choice for beginners and many small businesses in 2026, but only if you check the product, term and renewal price before paying. Its familiar cPanel interface remains available on many hosting products, while the newer Bluehost Portal handles routine tasks. Cloud hosting is the important exception: Bluehost Cloud plans do not include cPanel. Self-managed VPS customers can add cPanel, but licensing is now tiered by account count.
The strongest case for Bluehost is convenience: guided WordPress setup, migration assistance, SSL, CDN, staging, managed updates, caching, malware protection and weekly backups are bundled on the listed WordPress tiers. The main cautions are prepaid introductory terms, substantially higher renewal pricing, plan-dependent phone support, and anecdotal reports of billing or cancellation friction. Independent testing is encouraging but limited to one configuration, so an advertised visit allowance or uptime SLA should not be treated as a performance guarantee.
What Bluehost cPanel hosting is in 2026
Bluehost now uses two control layers. The Bluehost Portal is designed for everyday account and WordPress tasks, while cPanel remains available for many traditional hosting functions such as websites, databases, FTP accounts and technical settings. This lets a new site owner avoid advanced controls at first and still gives an experienced administrator the familiar cPanel tools when needed.
That description does not apply to every product. Product names can look similar during checkout, so confirm the control panel shown for the exact plan and term you are buying. The current product split is:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Bluehost product | cPanel status in 2026 | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Shared and eligible WordPress hosting | cPanel is available for many plans, alongside the Bluehost Portal | Check the checkout details for the specific edition |
| Bluehost Cloud | cPanel is not included | Use the Cloud control experience described for that product instead |
| Self-managed VPS | cPanel is a separate, tiered add-on | Choose the account tier before completing the VPS order |
Bluehost’s own announcement describes the change directly: “Bluehost is transitioning from a single flat-rate cPanel offering to a tiered licensing model.” That change matters most to agencies, resellers and anyone running several independent accounts on one VPS. A single-site WordPress customer is more likely to be affected by the shared-versus-Cloud distinction than by VPS licensing.
VPS cPanel license tiers
The VPS add-on is not selected by default. It follows the VPS term and cannot be downgraded, so select the smallest tier that covers your current account count plus realistic near-term growth.
| License | Included accounts | Price | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| cPanel Admin | 5 | $14.99 per month | Separate add-on; follows the VPS term |
| cPanel Pro | 30 | $38.99 per month | Separate add-on; follows the VPS term |
| cPanel Plus | 50 | $48.99 per month | Separate add-on; follows the VPS term |
| cPanel Premier | 100 | $58.99 per month | Separate add-on; follows the VPS term |
Because downgrading is not available, an agency that starts on a larger tier should model the recurring license cost rather than assuming it can reduce the tier after a client leaves. Confirm whether your expected account count includes suspended or parked accounts before ordering.

Bluehost WordPress pricing: introductory term versus renewal
Bluehost’s current WordPress page lists monthly-equivalent prices on a 36-month term, but the selected term is charged in advance. The first figure you see is therefore not a one-month commitment and not necessarily the amount that will appear at renewal.
| Plan | Introductory monthly equivalent | 36-month introductory charge (calculated) | Listed renewal monthly equivalent | Illustrative 36-month renewal charge* | Websites | Storage | Advertised monthly visits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $3.99 | $143.64 | $9.99 | $359.64 | 10 | 10 GB NVMe | 40,000 |
| Business | $6.99 | $251.64 | $13.99 | $503.64 | 50 | 50 GB | 200,000 estimated |
| eCommerce Essentials | $14.99 | $539.64 | $21.99 | $791.64 | 100 | 100 GB | 400,000 estimated |
*The calculated renewal totals assume another 36-month term at the listed renewal monthly equivalent. Your actual renewal term, taxes, add-ons and checkout offer can change the amount.

The practical answer to “How much does Bluehost cost after the first year?” is that the first-year question can be misleading. A 36-month promotion is prepaid, so the promotional rate may run for three years before renewal rather than ending after 12 months. At renewal, the monthly equivalent can be more than twice the introductory figure. Check the renewal amount, term length and any optional services on the final order screen and save a copy of that screen.
Why a renewal bill can look unexpectedly large
- Term pricing: a low monthly equivalent may represent a larger upfront payment for 36 months.
- Promotion expiry: the renewal rate is materially higher on all three listed WordPress plans.
- Product changes: an upgrade can move an account onto a different plan or billing term.
- Add-ons: domains, security services, backups or other extras can appear separately from the headline hosting price.
- Usage or account changes: adding sites or upgrading storage can alter the next invoice.
Recent Reddit discussions include an individual report of a bill rising from roughly $60 per year to about $400 per year after an upgrade, along with complaints about cancellation and renewal handling. These are anecdotal, unverified accounts, not a measured defect rate. They are nevertheless a reason to ask support for an itemised renewal quote before approving an upgrade.

What is included on the WordPress plans
The listed Starter, Business and eCommerce Essentials tiers bundle a broad set of tools that would otherwise require separate plugins or services:
- Free SSL certificates
- Content delivery network (CDN)
- Managed WordPress updates
- Migration assistance
- Staging environments
- SSH access and WP-CLI
- Caching
- Malware scanning and removal
- Web application firewall
- DDoS protection
- Weekly backups
That bundle is a meaningful advantage for a first site or a small team that does not want to assemble a security and maintenance stack. It does not remove the need to test restores, update application passwords and review plugin compatibility. “Weekly backups” also does not tell you how long backups are retained or how quickly a restore is completed, so ask support those questions before treating the feature as a complete disaster-recovery plan.
Support by plan
| Plan | Chat support | Phone support | Best fit implied by the support mix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Included | Not included | Personal sites and owners comfortable with chat-based help |
| Business | Included | Included | Small businesses that may need a live escalation path |
| eCommerce Essentials | Included | Included | Stores where checkout or payment downtime has a direct cost |
Bluehost’s Canadian support page claims an average live-chat response time under two minutes and 24/7 phone support. Treat that as a vendor claim on a regional page, not as an independently measured response guarantee for every country, queue or account type.

Performance and uptime: what the evidence does and does not show
TechRadar’s hands-on test used a basic shared plan with a small WooCommerce store. The site recorded a WordPress Benchmark server score of 7.9, with strong filesystem, database and network results. The test found no persistent object-caching result, although Bluehost now advertises object caching on Starter. That difference may reflect a changed configuration or a feature that was not active in the tested setup.
A single benchmark is useful for understanding one configuration, not for predicting every Bluehost site. A brochure site with a few pages, a plugin-heavy store and a media-rich membership site can place very different demands on the same plan. The advertised visit allowances in the plan table are comparison figures, not a promise that every site can serve that traffic at the same speed.
Uptime promises and SLA credits
Bluehost advertises a 99.99% shared-hosting uptime SLA. The SLA allows one monthly credit claim when measured uptime falls below the target, provided the customer submits the claim within the stated window and meets the other terms. A credit is compensation under a contract; it is not an independent measurement of uptime and does not restore lost sales, search visibility or customer trust.
Cloud products have a separate 100% data-center-network SLA, according to TechRadar. That wording covers the defined network component, not every application, database query or WordPress plugin running on a customer site. Read the exclusions and measurement method before choosing a plan solely for the headline percentage.
How to choose the right Bluehost product
Choose shared or WordPress hosting when
- You want guided setup rather than server administration.
- Your sites fit within the published website and storage allowances.
- You value bundled staging, migration, malware tooling and weekly backups.
- You can accept the renewal price after the promotional term.
Choose Cloud only when
- Your workload benefits from the Cloud architecture and its separate SLA wording.
- You do not require cPanel, or you have confirmed that your team can work without it.
- You have checked the Cloud plan’s own resource, backup and support details rather than assuming they match WordPress tiers.
Choose a VPS with cPanel when
- You need server-level control or isolated resources.
- You manage several client or project accounts and need a defined cPanel account tier.
- You have budgeted for the non-optional nature of the selected license once ordered.
- You can handle operating-system, security and application administration yourself or have an administrator who can.
Setting up a Bluehost WordPress site without surprises
- Record the offer. Before payment, save the plan name, introductory term, renewal amount, included sites and storage, support channels, and any add-ons shown in checkout.
- Confirm the control panel. Verify whether the product includes cPanel. Do not infer cPanel availability from the Bluehost brand name; Cloud plans are the stated exception.
- Choose the term deliberately. Compare the total prepaid amount with the renewal total. A lower monthly equivalent can require a larger upfront payment.
- Use the guided WordPress installation. The Bluehost Portal is intended to keep initial setup simple. Create a unique administrator password and enable multifactor authentication where offered.
- Point or register the domain. Check nameservers and DNS records before switching a live site. Keep the old host active until the new site has been tested.
- Run the migration. Use the included migration assistance or the documented migration workflow. Inventory pages, media, forms, cron jobs, email accounts and DNS records before declaring the move complete.
- Test staging first. Verify themes, plugins, checkout, contact forms, redirects, image delivery and scheduled tasks in staging before publishing changes.
- Check security and backups. Confirm SSL is active, review firewall and malware settings, and perform a test backup or restore so you know the recovery path rather than merely assuming weekly backups are usable.
- Measure your baseline. Record page-load timings, error logs, PHP warnings and database size during a normal traffic period. A baseline makes it easier to distinguish a configuration issue from a capacity limit later.
Migration, security and backup considerations
Migration is one of Bluehost’s strongest beginner-facing features, but “included migration” does not guarantee that every custom service moves automatically. A store can have payment webhooks, transactional email, scheduled imports, external DNS, image-processing jobs or license keys that require manual reconfiguration. Make a written inventory before changing nameservers and reduce DNS TTL in advance when a short cutover window matters.

SSL, CDN, a web application firewall and DDoS protection provide useful baseline defenses. They are not substitutes for secure administrator accounts, patched plugins, least-privilege access and a tested recovery plan. Weekly backups may be adequate for a low-change brochure site but can leave a busy store with several days of lost orders if the latest usable restore is old. Ask how often backups run, where they are stored, how long they are retained and whether on-demand downloads are available.
Common Bluehost problems and practical fixes
The renewal price is much higher than the first invoice
Compare the original order confirmation with the renewal notice line by line. Identify the hosting plan, term, domain, privacy service and optional security products separately. If an upgrade caused the change, request an itemised quote and ask whether the account can remain on the original tier. Do not cancel a live site until you have exported the site, database, email and DNS information.
The account does not show cPanel
First check whether the product is Cloud hosting; Cloud plans do not include cPanel. If it is a shared or WordPress product advertised as cPanel-enabled, ask support to confirm the exact edition and account type. On VPS, check whether the cPanel license was purchased as an add-on and whether the selected tier covers the required number of accounts.
The site is slow despite being below the visit allowance
Traffic totals alone do not describe workload. Review plugin queries, uncached requests, image sizes, PHP errors, scheduled jobs and database growth. Confirm whether caching and object caching are active in your configuration. The TechRadar benchmark’s lack of persistent object-caching output shows why a feature advertised on a plan should still be verified on the actual account.
A restore or migration is incomplete
List missing tables, uploads, cron jobs, email mailboxes, DNS records and third-party integrations. Test the site on a temporary address before changing DNS again. Keep an export outside Bluehost so a failed restore does not leave the only copy on the same account.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Support is slower or less available than expected
Check the plan first: Starter lists chat but not phone support, while Business and eCommerce Essentials list phone support. The Canadian page’s under-two-minute chat statement is a regional vendor claim, so response time can differ by region, queue and issue type. Include your account ID, timestamps, error messages and the exact change that preceded the problem to reduce back-and-forth.
Is Bluehost cPanel hosting worth it for a small business?
For a small business that wants WordPress, migration help and a conventional control panel without managing a server, Bluehost is worth considering. Business is the more balanced listed tier when phone support, more sites and more storage justify its higher recurring cost. Starter can suit a small portfolio or brochure site if chat-only support is acceptable. eCommerce Essentials is aimed at a larger site footprint and online selling, but its higher renewal price should be weighed against the cost of a store outage or a separate security stack.
The decision is weaker when a business needs guaranteed independent performance measurements, predictable long-term pricing, Cloud architecture without cPanel, or full server control without paying and managing a VPS license. In those cases, compare providers using the same checklist rather than comparing only the introductory monthly number.
How to compare Bluehost with another cPanel host
| Comparison question | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Total first-term cost | Monthly-equivalent advertising can hide a large prepaid charge | Term length and exact amount charged today |
| Renewal cost | Promotions can more than double at renewal | Renewal term, monthly equivalent and add-ons |
| cPanel availability | Some products omit cPanel or sell it separately | Included, excluded or tiered license; account limit |
| Resource limits | Sites, storage and traffic workloads vary widely | Website count, storage type, CPU/RAM limits and any visit estimate |
| Migration and backups | A cheap plan can cost more if these services are separate | Migration scope, backup frequency, retention and restore process |
| Support channels | Chat-only help may be unsuitable for a revenue-critical store | Phone availability, hours and regional qualifications |
| SLA wording | A credit promise is not the same as measured availability | Covered component, exclusions, measurement and claim deadline |
| Performance evidence | One benchmark cannot represent every workload | Test plan, application, caching state and test date |
| Cancellation and upgrades | Changing products can trigger new terms or billing | Refund exclusions, domain-fee treatment and downgrade rules |
Final verdict
Bluehost remains a credible beginner and small-business host in 2026 when its bundled WordPress tooling and familiar cPanel access match your needs. Buy it with a checklist: confirm that your product includes cPanel, calculate the prepaid introductory total, write down the renewal price, select support appropriate to your business risk, and treat visit estimates and SLA percentages as qualified claims rather than guarantees.
Its positive onboarding experience and the 7.9 benchmark result support a reasonable performance case, but neither replaces testing your own site. The mixed billing and support stories found in user discussions are anecdotal, yet they justify keeping invoices, renewal notices and migration backups under your control. For many first-time site owners, that discipline turns Bluehost’s convenience into a sensible choice; for agencies needing many VPS accounts or buyers who require predictable long-term pricing, the cPanel tier and renewal economics deserve closer comparison before checkout.
