Bluefin LTS is Project Bluefin’s image-based Linux workstation built on CentOS Stream 10, intended for people who want a comparatively conservative system cadence with a modern GNOME desktop. It became generally available on September 18, 2025, after nine months of development. The project described each release as having an intended lifespan of about three to five years—not a guaranteed support end date. Read the launch announcement.

What Bluefin LTS is—and who it suits

Bluefin LTS is a distinct Project Bluefin image family for workstation users who would rather keep a system steady than follow the faster-moving Fedora-based Bluefin track. The project’s launch announcement described it as a workstation for people who want long-term support alongside a modern desktop, and characterized the intended setup as “set it and forget it.” That phrase describes the target experience, not a promise that maintenance or troubleshooting will never be needed.

It is still a contemporary desktop rather than a minimal server platform. The launch announcement highlighted GNOME, Flathub applications through Bazaar, Homebrew, and ZFS as parts of the broader Bluefin ecosystem. It also warned that the LTS edition did not necessarily have feature parity with the Fedora build: features that were difficult to bring to LTS could be omitted.

Base system, desktop, and kernel choices

CentOS Stream 10 with EPEL

The launch build was based on CentOS Stream 10, with EPEL providing additional packages. Project Bluefin announced backported GNOME 48 and aarch64 images at launch. These are launch-era specifications, not a statement that every component remains at those versions today. Bluefin LTS is delivered as an image-based system using bootc-oriented image workflows, so readers should check the current image tag and release notes for the build they intend to install.

Standard and HWE images

At launch, the standard image used Linux 6.12.0; the optional hardware enablement (HWE) branch offered a newer kernel, listed as 6.15.9 in the 2025 announcement. Those numbers describe the initial release only. A later Project Bluefin update described HWE as bringing in the Fedora kernel, but did not make those launch kernel numbers current. Check the official rolling releases and the release notes for the selected image before installing.

The practical distinction is that the standard image is the conservative kernel choice, while HWE is an alternative to consider when newer hardware support matters. Exact kernel versions and branch behavior can change; choose based on the current build documentation rather than assuming the launch versions still apply.

How to install Bluefin LTS

Project Bluefin documents installation through a live session and the Anaconda web UI. Its official downloads include x86_64 and aarch64 images, each in standard and HWE variants. Make sure the image architecture matches the device you plan to install on.

  1. Choose an image. Select x86_64 or aarch64, then choose standard or HWE after checking the current release information.
  2. Prepare installation media. Write the downloaded ISO to a USB flash drive using an ISO-writing utility. The project does not specify a required drive brand or capacity.
  3. Boot the computer from the USB drive. Start the live session and confirm that the desktop and essential hardware work as expected.
  4. Run the installer. Open the Anaconda web UI from the live environment and follow its prompts to install Bluefin LTS.
  5. Verify the installed image. Consult Project Bluefin’s release page for the current image tag and, if you need supply-chain verification, its documented signature, SBOM-attestation, and build-provenance procedures.

Bluefin LTS versus Fedora-based Bluefin

These are separate image families, not simply two labels for the same installation. Bluefin is Fedora-based; Bluefin LTS is the CentOS Stream 10-based option. That distinction affects the underlying system and supported update path, while Bluefin LTS aims to offer a slower desktop release cadence without abandoning a modern GNOME environment.

Can you rebase an existing Bluefin installation?

No: Project Bluefin says rebasing directly from the Fedora-based Bluefin family to the CentOS-based Bluefin LTS family is unsupported. Treat this as a family boundary, not as a routine channel switch. Plan for a fresh installation or use an upgrade path that Project Bluefin explicitly supports; do not assume an in-place rebase is safe. See the official repository for current project guidance.

Known caveats and what to check before installing

Laptop power management

A 2026 Project Bluefin update reported that the tuned policy still needed a fix and that a workaround was needed for laptop power management. This is a dated report, not confirmation that every current build has the issue. Check the latest known issues and release notes for the exact image you plan to install.

Feature parity and version drift

Bluefin LTS is a deliberate variant, so do not assume every feature in Fedora-based Bluefin is available. In addition, component versions and kernel branches move over time. Use the current release tag and documentation for installation decisions, and treat GNOME 48 and the launch kernel versions as historical details.

Secure Boot and HWE

The same 2026 project update said HWE branches supported Secure Boot. Because that statement is tied to a particular update, verify the current branch-specific instructions if Secure Boot is a requirement for your device.
