Blue Water Embedded introduced Prism in 2010 as a commercial GUI toolkit for embedded devices, not a framework for desktop applications. Its three components covered on-device graphics and widgets, a smaller option for low-color displays, and a desktop tool for designing screens and exporting resources. Launch materials advertised full source code and royalty-free licensing, but the available evidence does not establish whether Prism is still sold or supported in 2026.

What was Blue Water Embedded’s Prism?

Prism was a software suite for adding graphical interfaces to resource-constrained products in areas such as medical equipment, industrial systems, office automation, and consumer devices. The launch rationale reflected a broader shift toward graphical interfaces in products outside the traditional computer market: Ken Maxwell, then president of Blue Water Embedded, said that users had come to expect them in many device categories.

The suite paired runtime software for the device with a desktop design and resource-authoring tool. It was intended for embedded development rather than general-purpose desktop GUI programming.

What did the three Prism components do?

Prism Runtime Framework

The Runtime Framework supplied a graphical drawing library, widgets, an event manager, and a screen manager. Reported visual capabilities included animations, screen transitions, alpha blending, anti-aliasing, and canvas transformations.

Prism Micro

Prism Micro was the lower-overhead variant, aimed at devices with monochrome displays through color depths of 8 bits. Blue Water Embedded described it as small and portable across hardware capable of graphical output.

Prism Insight

Prism Insight was a desktop drag-and-drop WYSIWYG designer and resource editor. It supported TrueType fonts and widget definitions, and let developers design animated screen flows. It could export ANSI C/C++ source, XML screen-description files, and binary resource files, giving teams several ways to incorporate designed interfaces into a project.

How much memory did Prism need?

LinuxDevices reported a typical full-featured GUI footprint of roughly 180 KB of code, 4 KB of stack, and 16 KB of dynamic memory in its 2010 coverage. Those figures were conditional, not universal minimum hardware requirements: the report said actual use depended on the processor, compiler, and enabled feature set.

LinuxDevices listed support for x86, ARM, Blackfin, and Renesas SH target architectures. The listed architectures and footprint figures describe the product as reported in 2010; they do not establish support for current processor platforms.

Was Prism really royalty-free, and what did it cost?

Yes, the 2010 launch announcement described Prism as delivered with full source code and royalty-free licensing. That did not mean the software itself was free: Blue Water Embedded stated that development-only license pricing started at $2,000 and offered a free evaluation kit through company contacts. Both the price and the evaluation offer are historical launch terms, not verified current offers.

Did Prism work with ThreadX or SMX?

There were launch-era RTOS integrations. Express Logic announced PrismX, an integration of Prism with its ThreadX RTOS, comprising PrismX Runtime Framework, PrismX Micro, and PrismX Insight. That announcement said full-source, royalty-free PrismX license prices started under $10,000. Separately, Micro Digital announced Prism support with its SMX RTOS product line.
