The available evidence does not establish what Bloomberg’s article “Data Centers: Where the ‘Go’s Go” reported, because the article itself could not be located. A separate, verifiable example shows how one operator reports water use by data-center location: Alphabet disclosed site-level figures for 2024, including a wide difference between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Hamina, Finland. Those numbers describe Alphabet’s reported water consumption—not Bloomberg’s findings or the data-center industry as a whole.
What can be verified about the Bloomberg article?
The Bloomberg story’s specific locations, companies, statistics, and conclusions are unverified. Without the article or an accessible copy, it would be misleading to summarize its reporting or attribute any facility-level figures to Bloomberg.
One relevant primary source is Alphabet’s 2025 environmental report. It provides a schedule of water use by data-center location for the year ended December 31, 2024, separating water withdrawal, discharge, and consumption. The schedule reports total data-center water consumption of 7,787 million gallons across the locations listed, including “other data center locations.” This is Alphabet’s operator-reported 2024 total, not an industry-wide figure. Alphabet 2025 Environmental Report.
What Alphabet’s location-level water figures show
The report gives sharply different consumption figures for individual locations. For 2024, it lists 1,010.2 million gallons at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and 0.3 million gallons at Hamina, Finland. These are company disclosures for the reporting period; they are not comparable estimates of each site’s full environmental impact.

- Model: DV4600-492
- Bearing Type: Ball; Fan Diameter: 120mm; Maximum Fan Speed: 2650/3100 RPM; Material: Plastic; Type: Axial cooling fan

Water withdrawal, discharge, and consumption are distinct measures, so a location’s consumption figure alone does not describe all water moving through a facility. The reported figures also do not, by themselves, explain why the sites differ or establish their relative effects on local water resources.
What this evidence does not establish about data-center siting
The available evidence does not provide a sourced comparison of data-center locations by electricity availability or price, grid connection, climate, tax policy, or network access. Those factors therefore cannot be presented here as Bloomberg’s explanation for where facilities are built.

Alphabet’s schedule is useful as an example of location-specific operator reporting, but it covers that company’s disclosed water use for 2024—not every operator, facility, or environmental impact. It cannot stand in for a complete inventory of data centers or settle the broader question of why any particular site was chosen.
