Its signature Infinite Drive launched as a cross-device alternative to a physical hard drive, but the company raised its price, ended unlimited storage, and later shut down Bitcasa Drive for consumers. The service is not a viable option for new signups or dependable storage today.
What Bitcasa offered
Bitcasa publicly launched Infinite Drive in February 2013 for iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and the web. TechCrunch reported a launch price of $10 per month or $99 per year. The pitch was essentially a cloud-based “magic external hard drive” that would not run out of space and could be accessed across devices. Those were the service’s original claims, not proof of long-term reliability. TechCrunch’s launch coverage describes the product and its positioning.
How Bitcasa’s storage and pricing changed
The 2013 price increase
In November 2013, Bitcasa raised the unlimited plan from $10 per month or $99 per year to $99 per month or $999 per year. It also introduced finite plans: 1TB for $10 per month or $99 per year, and 5TB for $50 per month or $499 per year. The free tier was cut from 10GB to 5GB. Contemporary reporting said existing users were grandfathered in at that point. These are historical prices, not current offers. PCWorld reported the pricing and plan changes.
Infinite storage ended in 2014
In October 2014, Bitcasa ended Infinite storage. The company cited both low demand and persistent abuse of its terms of service. It said 0.5% of accounts required more than 1TB and fewer than 0.1% required more than 10TB. Those figures were Bitcasa’s own account-use estimates, quoted in 2014 coverage—not an independent audit. Engadget covered the change and the company’s explanation.

Customers were told to move to finite plans or migrate their files. Contemporary reports described replacement choices of about $99 per year for 1TB or $999 per year for 10TB, and a November 15, 2014 migration deadline. The Verge’s report covered the transition and deadline.
Bitcasa Drive’s consumer shutdown
In April 2016, TechCrunch reported that Bitcasa was discontinuing Bitcasa Drive for consumers to focus on its platform business. Users were given until May 20, 2016 to download their data. After 11:59 p.m. Pacific time that day, accounts and stored data were to be permanently deleted. That deadline has passed. TechCrunch reported the shutdown and final download deadline.

Can you recover files from an old Bitcasa account?
The documented download window ended in 2016, and the available shutdown reporting does not establish a current recovery process. If you still need files, check any computers, phones, external drives, or other cloud accounts where you may have saved or synchronized copies. Do not assume an old Bitcasa login, app, or account can restore the data.

The idea was appealing: one cloud location for files available across desktop, mobile, and web, with an advertised capacity that removed the usual storage ceiling. But the service’s history is a cautionary one for anyone choosing a place to keep important files: its unlimited plan became dramatically more expensive, unlimited storage was withdrawn, and the consumer service later closed. The launch proposition alone cannot establish how reliably it worked for users over time.
