Binance removed premium-index observations recorded during a 2-hour-44-minute overnight connectivity disruption from the 08:00 UTC funding calculation on October 21, 2026, for TradFi perpetual contracts whose underlying asset is a U.S. equity. The exchange said an unnamed large U.S. overnight alternative trading system (ATS) had intermittent network problems from 03:46 to 06:30 UTC. Binance did not say that it halted trading, publish the resulting funding rates, or promise refunds. The decision changed which observations entered the formula; it did not automatically cancel the funding transfer between longs and shorts.
Why did Binance remove overnight stock data from funding?
Binance identified the 03:46–06:30 UTC window as unreliable and excluded its premium-index observations before the 08:00 UTC settlement. Its October 21 notice, published at 07:17 UTC, covered TradFi Perps with any U.S. equity as the underlying asset. Binance did not identify the ATS by name.
Independent reporting found that the same interval matched a halt involving Blue Ocean, an overnight U.S. ATS. That timing makes Blue Ocean a plausible match, but Binance did not confirm that attribution, so it should not be treated as an official identification.
The stated window lasted 2 hours and 44 minutes. The action applied to one funding calculation’s inputs, not necessarily to the contracts’ continuous trading. Binance did not announce a trading halt in the notice.

Which contracts and settlement were affected?
The notice applied to USDⓈ-margined TradFi perpetual futures with a U.S. equity as the underlying. These contracts trade around the clock, including when the underlying stock exchange is closed, so their pricing and funding systems can depend on overnight market data.
- Affected input: premium-index observations collected during 03:46–06:30 UTC on October 21, 2026.
- Affected settlement: the 08:00 UTC funding-rate calculation.
- Not disclosed: the contract-by-contract rates, payment totals, customer losses, or any compensation decision.
The event was not a stock-token collateral repricing. The premium index and funding calculation are separate from collateral valuation and mark-price controls.
How does the premium index change a perpetual-futures funding payment?
Funding is a transfer between opposing perpetual positions. A positive rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means shorts pay longs. Binance documents the calculation as Funding Amount = Nominal Value of Positions × Funding Rate.

The premium index compares impact bid and impact ask prices with the relevant price index. Binance says observations are collected every five seconds and averaged over the funding interval in its general methodology. Its TradFi Perps documentation also describes different index-smoothing modes for regular, after-hours, overnight, and fixed periods.
Removing observations therefore changes the data set from which the rate is derived. It does not by itself erase the 08:00 UTC payment obligation. The resulting rate still determines transfers between the long and short sides, subject to the contract’s published rules.
What changed when Binance excluded the outage window?
| Issue | Including disrupted observations | Excluding the identified window |
|---|---|---|
| Data integrity | Retains every timestamp but allows potentially bad feed data to influence the average. | Removes observations Binance identified as unreliable. |
| Auditability | Readers must reconstruct how the outage altered the average. | Readers need both the dropped window and the resulting rate to reproduce the settlement. |
| Payment effect | May shift transfers between longs and shorts if bad data moves the rate. | Changes the calculation inputs; it does not automatically cancel funding. |
| Operational precedent | Prioritizes uninterrupted data continuity. | Creates an exception process for an external-market data outage. |
Binance executive Shunyet Jan described the rationale this way: “Traders shouldn’t pay for an outage they didn’t cause.” He said the distorted period was kept out of funding so that what users pay follows the real market. The exchange did not publish enough numerical detail to independently measure the policy’s effect on each contract.

Did Binance refund traders after the overnight ATS disruption?
No refund, reimbursement, or compensation commitment was disclosed in the cited Binance notice or subsequent reporting. Excluding the observations was a calculation adjustment, not an announcement that already-settled payments would be reversed. Any claim about a specific customer’s gain, loss, or refund would require figures Binance did not provide.

That conclusion is possible but not confirmed by Binance. The exchange referred only to an unnamed large U.S. overnight ATS, while independent reporting matched its timestamps to a Blue Ocean interruption. The responsible description is therefore that Blue Ocean was a timing-based identification, not a confirmed Binance attribution.
A separate report cited a Bybit SOXL perpetual rate moving from 0.0000% to -0.1299% during the disruption window. That example illustrates how faulty inputs can move a funding rate, but it is not a Binance settlement result and should not be used to infer Binance’s rate or payment amount.

What should traders check during an overnight data outage?
- Identify the exact contract. Confirm that its underlying is a U.S. equity and note whether it is a TradFi Perp with an overnight or other special smoothing mode.
- Check the funding interval. Record the settlement time in UTC; an outage matters only if its observations feed that interval’s calculation.
- Review premium-index history. Look for missing, abnormal, or thin-liquidity observations rather than treating an overnight rate as a normal-session signal.
- Read exchange notices. Note the affected timestamps and whether the venue excluded data, changed an index method, halted trading, or took another action.
- Separate pricing from collateral. A funding-data intervention does not, by itself, indicate a change to mark price, margin valuation, or collateral quality.
- Keep payment expectations conditional. Until the exchange publishes the resulting rate, do not calculate a profit, loss, or refund from the outage alone.
Why does this incident matter for stock-linked crypto derivatives?
Continuous equity-linked perpetuals inherit dependencies on traditional-market exchanges, ATSs, index providers, and other data paths even when the crypto venue itself remains open. An overnight feed failure can therefore affect a funding transfer without stopping order matching on Binance.
Excluding a clearly identified bad-data interval is a defensible risk-control choice, but transparent auditing requires more than timestamps. Traders would need the resulting rate and enough premium-index information to verify how the exclusion changed the settlement. Binance disclosed the interval but not those numerical outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time was the Binance funding calculation affected?
The excluded observations came from 03:46 through 06:30 UTC on October 21, 2026. They were removed before the 08:00 UTC funding calculation.

Did Binance stop trading its stock perpetuals during the outage?
The notice did not announce a halt in the affected contracts. It described a change to funding-calculation inputs only.
Can I calculate my exact funding payment from the outage window?
Not from the published information alone. Binance did not release the resulting contract-specific rates or payment totals, so the nominal position value and final rate remain unknown.
Are TradFi Perps available when U.S. stock markets are closed?
Binance describes these USDⓈ-margined perpetuals as trading 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Their index-smoothing modes can differ between regular, after-hours, overnight, and fixed periods.
