In the latest FTSE/JSE Top 40 factsheet snapshot (data as at 30 April 2026), Naspers is the largest named constituent in software and computer services, Gold Fields leads precious metals and mining, FirstRand leads banks, and MTN Group leads telecommunications service providers. Their net market capitalisations were ZAR 676,395 million, ZAR 627,609 million, ZAR 448,818 million and ZAR 367,170 million respectively.
This is a large-cap view based on an index factsheet, not a live ranking of every company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). Market values and index weights change with share prices, free-float adjustments, corporate actions and index reviews.
Who is the biggest company in each JSE sector?
The table below uses the sector labels and constituent figures shown by FTSE Russell in the retrieved FTSE/JSE Top 40 factsheet. Market capitalisation is net market capitalisation in ZAR millions, and the percentage is the constituent’s weight in that index.
| Sector shown by FTSE Russell | Largest named company | Net market cap (ZAR million) | Index weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software and computer services | Naspers | 676,395 | 9.22% |
| Precious metals and mining | Gold Fields | 627,609 | 8.55% |
| Banks | FirstRand | 448,818 | 6.12% |
| Telecommunications service providers | MTN Group | 367,170 | 5.00% |
On this measure, Naspers is the largest named constituent in the snapshot. Gold Fields is close behind, while FirstRand and MTN Group are the leading banking and telecommunications-services names displayed in the table.

What the leading JSE companies reveal about sector concentration
Technology exposure through Naspers
Naspers is classified by FTSE Russell in software and computer services and has a net market capitalisation of ZAR 676,395 million. Its 9.22% index weight makes it the largest individual weight among the four sector leaders listed above. The classification describes the activity used for index purposes; it does not mean that every part of a diversified group’s operations fits neatly into a single technology category.
Mining remains a major source of large-cap representation
Precious metals and mining supplies several of the biggest names in the same top-table snapshot. Gold Fields has ZAR 627,609 million in net market capitalisation and a 8.55% weight. AngloGold Ashanti is also listed at ZAR 522,672 million and 7.12%, while Valterra Platinum is listed at ZAR 317,281 million and 4.32%. All three are classified as precious metals and mining in the supplied FTSE/JSE data.
The practical implication is that a headline ranking of the largest JSE constituents can be heavily influenced by mining valuations and commodity-market conditions. A change in precious-metals or platinum prices can affect the relative position of several large constituents at once.
Banks account for multiple top positions
FirstRand leads the banking group shown, with ZAR 448,818 million in net market capitalisation and a 6.12% index weight. Standard Bank Group appears at ZAR 420,410 million and 5.73%, and Capitec Bank Holdings at ZAR 377,369 million and 5.14%.
These figures show why “the biggest bank” and “the biggest financial company” are not interchangeable descriptions. The answer depends on the sector classification being used and on whether the comparison is by market capitalisation, assets, earnings, deposits or another measure.

Telecommunications leadership in the displayed table
MTN Group is the leading telecommunications service provider in the snapshot, with net market capitalisation of ZAR 367,170 million and a 5.00% index weight. Telecommunications companies can have substantial operations outside South Africa, so a JSE listing does not by itself describe the geographic footprint of the underlying business.

What “biggest” means in this JSE comparison
Market capitalisation is the ranking measure
Market capitalisation is the value the market assigns to a company’s equity, generally calculated from its share price and shares in issue. The figures above are reported as net market capitalisation in ZAR millions. They are not revenue, profit, assets, employee counts or enterprise value.
Those alternative measures can produce very different leaders. A bank may have a large balance sheet without having the highest equity value; a miner’s market value can move sharply even when production changes only modestly; and a multinational can generate most of its sales outside South Africa while retaining a JSE listing.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Index weight is not the same as company size
The percentage column shows each constituent’s weight in the FTSE/JSE Top 40 index, not its share of the entire JSE economy. Weighting reflects the index’s rules, eligible universe and investability adjustments. A company can therefore have a large market capitalisation but a lower index weight than a simple unadjusted market-cap ranking might suggest.

Net market capitalisation and free float
The JSE describes constituent data as including the constituent name, ISIN and exchange code, closing price, total market capitalisation, investable market capitalisation, shares in issue and percentage index weight. Investable market capitalisation is total market capitalisation adjusted for free float: the portion of shares realistically available to public investors.
Free-float adjustment matters when a strategic shareholder, government, controlling family or cross-holding owns a substantial block that is not normally traded. Two companies with similar total equity values can receive different index weights if different proportions of their shares are available to investors.
Why JSE rankings can change after the stated date
Share-price movements
The snapshot is dated 30 April 2026. A daily price move can change the ordering, particularly when companies are close in value. Commodity prices can affect several mining constituents simultaneously, while interest-rate expectations and credit conditions can move bank valuations.
Shares in issue and corporate actions
New shares, buybacks, splits, mergers, demergers and other corporate actions change the inputs used to calculate market capitalisation. The effect may appear even if the quoted share price does not move in the same direction.

Free-float and investability changes
Changes in ownership or trading accessibility can alter investable market capitalisation. An index provider may revise a company’s free-float factor after a transaction or ownership disclosure, changing its index weight without an equivalent change in total market value.
Index reviews and classification decisions
Index providers periodically review constituents and sector classifications. A company can move into or out of a large-cap index, and its industry classification can change as its business mix evolves. For an up-to-date ranking, use the current JSE constituent files rather than relying on this dated snapshot.
How to check the current biggest JSE companies yourself
- Choose the universe. Decide whether you need the FTSE/JSE Top 40, another JSE index, or every listed issuer. A Top 40 answer is a large-cap answer, not an exchange-wide answer.
- Set the measurement date. Record the “as at” date beside every figure. Do not combine a historical market-cap figure with a current index weight.
- Use the provider’s sector field. Sector names depend on the classification system. Keep the provider’s label when comparing companies so that like-for-like groups are used.
- Record both total and investable values when available. Total market capitalisation describes the whole equity value; investable market capitalisation reflects the free-float-adjusted amount used for investability.
- Check the index weight. Weight indicates how much influence the constituent has in that index and helps explain why a free-float-adjusted ranking may differ from a raw market-cap ranking.
- Review corporate actions and index notices. Before calling a company the current leader, check for recent listings, delistings, buybacks, share issues, mergers or classification changes.
- State the geography. Identify whether the issuer is South African-domiciled, foreign-domiciled or dual-listed when that information is relevant. A JSE listing and a company’s operating geography are separate facts.
JSE size and the limits of a large-cap snapshot
The JSE reported 271 listed companies in its 2025 report, including 148 dual-listed companies. That scale explains why a four-sector Top 40 snapshot cannot answer every version of “biggest on the JSE.” It identifies prominent large-cap constituents, but it does not rank all 271 issuers by revenue, assets, workforce or geographic reach.
Foreign-domiciled companies can be included in JSE-oriented large-cap measures. S&P describes its South Africa 50 as comprising the 50 largest companies by float-adjusted market capitalisation from the S&P South Africa Composite, including foreign-domiciled companies. This is a useful reminder that exchange membership, domicile and operating exposure should be treated as separate comparison axes.

Use market cap to gauge equity-market scale
Market capitalisation is useful for understanding how large a company is relative to other listed equities and for estimating its potential influence on a market-cap-weighted index. It does not indicate whether the shares are cheap or expensive.

Use sector classification to identify concentration
Grouping the leaders by sector highlights concentration: three of the named top-table companies—Gold Fields, AngloGold Ashanti and Valterra Platinum—are in precious metals and mining, while FirstRand, Standard Bank Group and Capitec Bank Holdings are in banks. A portfolio that owns several leaders may therefore carry more exposure to a sector than a list of company names makes obvious.
Check liquidity and free float before comparing investability
Large total market capitalisation does not guarantee that every share is equally easy to trade. Liquidity, free float and the investable market-cap adjustment help distinguish a large company from a large, readily accessible public investment opportunity.
Separate business exposure from listing location
When comparing South African and foreign-domiciled or dual-listed issuers, examine where revenue, assets and operating risks arise. The JSE venue alone cannot answer those questions.
