The BFG AGEIA PhysX PPU was a dedicated add-in card designed to accelerate physics calculations in games that supported it. It was not a graphics card, and today it is mainly of interest to collectors or people restoring a compatible period PC: NVIDIA’s historical documentation confines AGEIA PPU support to older software, SDKs, and Windows XP or Vista.
What the BFG AGEIA PhysX card did
The card contained a physics-processing unit (PPU) intended to handle some supported games’ physics calculations instead of leaving all of that work to the CPU. It operated alongside the CPU and graphics card; it did not replace either component. The idea was to enable more complex physical interactions in compatible games, but adding simulation could also increase the work required elsewhere in the system. What a period system needed
PCI clearance and power
The card required a vacant PCI expansion slot and an additional four-pin Molex power connector, according to a 2007 technical tutorial. Check the specific card revision and its documentation before buying or powering a used unit. A card can be electrically compatible yet physically unusable if a graphics card or another component blocks the needed slot.
Slot crowding was a real concern in period builds, though it varied by motherboard and configuration. In a May 2006 review, bit-tech reported that 60% of the dual-graphics motherboards in its review sample had only one free PCI slot with the tested two-card configuration. That figure describes the review’s sample and setup, not all motherboards: bit-tech’s review.

Driver and game compatibility
The AGEIA PPU driver path
NVIDIA’s PhysX System Software 9.14.0702 documentation gives a narrow historical boundary for AGEIA hardware: “AGEIA PPU acceleration support for 2.8.1 SDK or earlier, and Windows Vista and Windows XP only.” NVIDIA also advises AGEIA processor users to use older software such as version 8.09.04. This is a documented limit, not a guarantee that every older game or current PC will work with the card: NVIDIA’s 9.14.0702 page.
Later PhysX software is a different route
NVIDIA’s PhysX System Software 9.21.0713, released October 15, 2021, describes physics acceleration on supported GeForce GPUs. For some games built with SDK versions before 2.7.1, NVIDIA says the separate PhysX Legacy Installer is also needed. Its examples of older titles include Cell Factor, Clive Barker’s Jericho, Gears of War, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Switch Ball, and Velvet Assassin. This later GPU-based path does not establish that the BFG AGEIA card itself is supported: NVIDIA’s 9.21.0713 page.

Should you buy or install one now?
For a general modern gaming PC, the BFG AGEIA PhysX card is not a practical upgrade. Its usefulness depends on old software support as well as compatible operating-system and SDK conditions, and the physical card also needs a suitable PCI slot and power connection. Consider one primarily for collecting or for a period-system restoration where the exact hardware, game, driver, and operating system are known to fit. If buying used, verify the card’s revision, condition, documentation, available slot, and power lead; marketplace stock and condition vary.
