Start with TUNIC if you want the closest modern Zelda-style experience on a Mac: it combines item-gated exploration, hidden information, environmental puzzles and demanding combat, with an official macOS build. Choose Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas for a more traditional 3D adventure, CrossCode for the deepest puzzle-heavy 2D action RPG, or Oceanhorn 3 if you have already played the earlier game and want its sequel. The recommendations below distinguish confirmed Mac support from games whose native status still needs store-level checking.
Quick answer: which Zelda-like Mac game should you play?
| Game | Best for | Mac availability evidence | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| TUNIC | Exploration, secrets and item-gated progression | Official Steam listing supports macOS 10.15 or later; macOS 11.6 with an M1 is recommended | Nonlinear discovery, cryptic in-game knowledge and challenging combat |
| Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas | A classic 3D Zelda-like structure | Apple Mac App Store listing | Swordfighting, magic, ancient items, dungeons and a story-driven campaign |
| CrossCode | Long, puzzle-focused 2D action RPG play | macOS release recorded on September 20, 2018 | Layered environmental puzzles and a larger RPG scope than a compact adventure |
| Oceanhorn 3 | Players who want the next Oceanhorn chapter | Available in Apple’s Mac storefront | Sequel positioned as the conclusion of the Oceanhorn era |
Best overall match: TUNIC. Best traditional 3D alternative: Oceanhorn. Best for puzzles and a longer 2D campaign: CrossCode.
What “runs natively on Mac” means here
A native Mac game has a macOS version distributed for Mac computers rather than requiring Windows dual-booting, a virtual machine or a cloud-streaming service. That distinction matters because a title can be playable through a workaround without being a dependable Mac purchase.

Native support does not automatically promise identical performance on every Mac. Apple sells Intel and Apple Silicon systems across several generations, while developers can change minimum operating-system requirements and storefront metadata. The evidence available for these recommendations establishes Mac distribution, not frame-rate results, battery life or universal Apple Silicon performance.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
TUNIC has the clearest published Apple Silicon guidance: its Steam listing names macOS 10.15 as the minimum and recommends macOS 11.6 with an M1. The other games have Mac storefront or release evidence, but the cited listings do not provide a comparable Apple Silicon performance statement. Check the current store page against your Mac’s macOS version before buying.
TUNIC: the closest modern Zelda-style match
Why it is the default recommendation
TUNIC reproduces the most distinctive part of classic Zelda design: progress comes from understanding the world, not simply following a quest marker. You find a tool, notice a door or obstacle that was previously inaccessible, and return when your new ability changes what the environment means. Steam summarizes that loop as: “Find the tool, remember the door you could not open, go back.”
That structure makes exploration feel consequential. A shortcut, hidden room or apparently decorative object may become important later, and the game expects you to pay attention. The result is more nonlinear than a straightforward sequence of marked objectives, with secrets and information serving as rewards alongside equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCombat and difficulty
TUNIC is not a relaxed sightseeing adventure. Its combat asks you to read enemy attacks, manage positioning and learn from failed attempts. If you want the tension of a Zelda-style dungeon or boss encounter rather than a purely cozy adventure, it is the strongest fit in this group. The trade-off is that players seeking an easy, purely story-led experience may find its fights demanding.
Mac requirements and controls
- Minimum operating system: macOS 10.15, according to the official Steam listing.
- Recommended configuration: macOS 11.6 with an M1.
- Input: Steam says, “Gamepad or Controller Recommended.”
The recommendation is about compatibility guidance, not a benchmark. The listing does not establish a guaranteed frame rate for every Mac model, so treat the stated operating-system and M1 information as a purchasing checkpoint rather than a performance promise.

Who should choose TUNIC?
- Choose it if discovering secrets without constant hand-holding is your priority.
- Choose it if you enjoy returning to earlier areas after finding a new ability.
- Choose it if challenging real-time combat is part of the appeal.
- Look at Oceanhorn instead if you specifically want a conventional 3D presentation and a more immediately familiar adventure structure.
Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas for a traditional 3D adventure
What makes it a Zelda alternative
Oceanhorn is the clearest choice for readers who mean “Zelda-like” in the classic 3D sense. Apple’s Mac App Store description highlights swordfighting, magic, ancient items, 3D visuals and a story-driven journey. Those ingredients map directly to the familiar pattern of exploring islands and dungeons, collecting tools and using them to reach new areas.
Its presentation is more immediately readable than TUNIC’s intentionally cryptic world. You can approach it as an adventure game first: travel, fight, solve environmental problems and follow the story. That makes it a useful starting point for someone who wants the genre’s recognizable structure without first learning an invented visual language.
Campaign size and controller support
The Cornfox & Bros. listing from 2013 advertised “more than 10 hours of story-driven gameplay.” That is a description from that listing, not a modern measurement of every player’s completion time. Apple also lists “Full Gamepad Controller Support,” which makes a Bluetooth controller a sensible accessory if you prefer console-style controls.
When Oceanhorn is the better pick
- You want 3D environments rather than a top-down or 2D presentation.
- You prefer a clear story path to a heavily cryptic progression system.
- You want sword, magic and ancient-item mechanics in a single package.
- You value full gamepad support and plan to play from a desk, couch or external display.
The available listing confirms a Mac storefront release and describes the game’s systems, but it does not establish current performance on a particular Intel Mac or Apple Silicon model. Verify the store’s current compatibility information before purchase.
CrossCode: the puzzle-heavy 2D option
Why puzzle fans should consider it
CrossCode is the strongest choice when puzzles matter as much as combat and exploration. The comparison evidence places it as the deepest puzzle-heavy experience among these leading picks. Its challenges are not merely occasional switches between fights; they are a central reason to explore and progress.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That focus gives CrossCode a different rhythm from TUNIC. TUNIC emphasizes discovering hidden information and deciding where to go next. CrossCode puts more weight on working through layered environmental problems, often asking you to observe a room, understand its rules and execute a solution under pressure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Mac release history
CrossCode’s release record lists macOS support with a Mac release date of September 20, 2018. That confirms a native Mac version in the published release history. Because storefront metadata can change, check the current store page for the exact operating-system requirement and controller notes that apply to the edition you intend to buy.
Who gets the most from CrossCode?
- Players who want a longer-feeling 2D action RPG rather than a compact adventure.
- Puzzle fans who enjoy learning systems and applying them across increasingly complex rooms.
- Readers who are comfortable with a more RPG-like scope and a game that spends substantial time on mechanics.
CrossCode is not the first recommendation if your priority is a direct 3D Zelda imitation. Its appeal is the depth of its puzzles and the way those puzzles shape the entire adventure.
Oceanhorn 3: a sequel-first choice
Oceanhorn 3 is another Mac-supported option in Apple’s store. It is positioned as the conclusion of the Oceanhorn era, so it makes the most sense as a sequel choice rather than the default entry point for someone asking for one Zelda-like game.
Start with the original Oceanhorn if you want to establish the series’ basic world, combat and item vocabulary. Choose Oceanhorn 3 when you have already played the earlier game, specifically want the later chapter, or prefer to begin with the title presented as the era’s conclusion. The Mac storefront availability is the relevant compatibility evidence; no independent performance testing is established here.

How the games differ by the experience you want
| Your priority | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Closest overall Zelda-style exploration | TUNIC | Its tool-gated backtracking, secrets and hidden information most closely reproduce discovery-led progression. |
| Classic 3D sword-and-magic adventure | Oceanhorn | It explicitly combines 3D visuals, swordfighting, magic and ancient items. |
| Most demanding puzzle focus | CrossCode | It is identified as the deepest puzzle-heavy option among the compared games. |
| Continue the Oceanhorn story | Oceanhorn 3 | It is the Mac-supported sequel positioned as the series’ conclusion. |
| Combat-first design | Death’s Door, with caution | It is the combat-first comparison pick, but native Mac status was not verified in the available evidence. |
The final row is intentionally not a purchase recommendation. A game can resemble Zelda in combat or camera perspective while failing the central requirement of this article: a confirmed native Mac build.
Apple Silicon and Intel Mac buying checklist
Use this checklist before you pay, especially if you are buying for an M-series Mac or an older Intel machine:
- Open the current Mac storefront page. For TUNIC, compare your system with the listed macOS 10.15 minimum and the macOS 11.6-with-M1 recommendation. For the other titles, read the current macOS requirement shown by the store.
- Confirm the platform label. Look for macOS or Mac support in the platform information, not merely a Windows listing with user comments about workarounds.
- Check available storage and updates. Leave room for the game and future patches; storefront requirements can change after an article is published.
- Review input support. TUNIC recommends a gamepad or controller, while Oceanhorn advertises full gamepad support. If you plan to use a controller, confirm that your specific model supports macOS and Bluetooth.
- Keep your receipt and note the store’s refund rules. This is useful if the current compatibility metadata differs from the listing you saw at purchase.
Setting up a controller on macOS
A controller is optional for many Mac games, but it is especially appropriate for TUNIC and Oceanhorn. The exact button layout varies by controller and game; the following process handles the Mac connection itself.
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- On macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Find the controller in the nearby-device list and select Connect.
- Launch the game and open its controls or input menu. Confirm that movement, camera, confirm and cancel actions register before starting a long session.
- If the game does not detect it, disconnect other gamepads, turn Bluetooth off and on, then pair the controller again. A wired USB connection is a useful diagnostic if the controller supports one.
Common Mac compatibility problems and fixes
The game will not install
Recheck the store’s Mac platform label and operating-system requirement. TUNIC’s published minimum is macOS 10.15; a Mac running an older release will not meet that requirement. If your Mac is already on a supported version, restart the store client, sign out and back in, and retry the installation.

The game opens and immediately closes
Install pending macOS and game updates, then reboot the Mac. If you use an external display, launch once with the display disconnected to rule out a display-mode problem. Do not infer that a crash proves the game is Windows-only; verify the current Mac listing and the developer’s support information first.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The controller connects but does nothing
Check whether macOS lists it as connected in System Settings > Bluetooth, then inspect the game’s own input settings. Quit other games that may have claimed the controller, reconnect it and test with a wired cable if available. TUNIC’s controller recommendation and Oceanhorn’s full gamepad-support statement make controller setup worth checking before changing other graphics settings.
You are unsure whether Apple Silicon is supported
Separate three questions: whether a Mac build exists, whether the game launches on your macOS version, and whether the developer publishes Apple Silicon-specific guidance. TUNIC supplies explicit M1 guidance alongside its operating-system requirements. The evidence for Oceanhorn, Oceanhorn 3 and CrossCode confirms Mac availability but does not provide equivalent Apple Silicon performance data, so consult the live store listing for your exact machine.
Which one should you buy first?
Buy TUNIC first for the broadest match to the Zelda formula: exploration that rewards memory, tools that change previously blocked routes, secrets that are easy to miss and combat with real consequences. Buy Oceanhorn instead when a conventional 3D adventure with sword, magic and ancient items is the deciding factor. Choose CrossCode when puzzle depth and a substantial 2D action-RPG structure matter more than recreating Zelda’s camera and presentation. Choose Oceanhorn 3 after the original, or when you specifically want the Mac-supported conclusion of that series.
These recommendations are based on published platform listings and design descriptions, not independent frame-rate tests. Recheck macOS requirements and storefront availability on the day you purchase because those details can change.
