Start with Majora’s Mask if you want the closest traditional 3D follow-up to Ocarina of Time. Choose Twilight Princess for a darker, more conventional adventure, The Wind Waker for brighter exploration, A Link to the Past or Link’s Awakening for classic top-down dungeons, Breath of the Wild for a complete open-world reset, and Tears of the Kingdom for a denser sandbox built on that modern direction.

There is no single best Zelda for every Ocarina fan. The right choice depends on whether you value Ocarina’s dungeon-and-story structure, freedom to explore, tone and art style, or convenient access on current Nintendo hardware.

What Zelda game should I play after Ocarina of Time?

If you want another game that feels recognizably like the Nintendo 64 classic, play Majora’s Mask first. It comes from the same broad era and retains traditional 3D movement, equipment-based progression, puzzle dungeons and a story-driven journey. Its time-loop structure, smaller world and much darker atmosphere make it a transformation rather than a simple sequel, but its underlying design language is the closest match.

For a more straightforward modern continuation of Ocarina-style 3D Zelda, choose Twilight Princess. For a more colorful game that emphasizes travel and discovery, choose The Wind Waker. If the parts you remember most are item-gated routes and compact, carefully ordered dungeons, move to A Link to the Past or Link’s Awakening. If you want Nintendo to rebuild the formula around unrestricted exploration, choose Breath of the Wild; choose Tears of the Kingdom when you want an even denser creative sandbox.

Which Zelda feels most like Ocarina of Time?

The answer changes according to the feature you are trying to recapture. This comparison separates the four useful axes: similarity to Ocarina’s 3D dungeon-and-story structure, freedom to roam, tone and art direction, and how easily you can play it on current Nintendo systems.

Game Similarity to Ocarina’s 3D structure Exploration freedom Tone and art direction Current Nintendo access
Majora’s Mask Very high: traditional 3D controls, items, dungeons and a story-led route Moderate; the repeating three-day cycle shapes where and when you can act Unusually dark, surreal and character-focused Nintendo lists it in its classic Zelda catalog and Switch Online coverage; region and service tier can vary
Twilight Princess High: conventional 3D progression and a familiar dungeon-focused rhythm Moderate; areas open in sequence Dark, realistic and dramatic Listed by Nintendo as a major series entry; current edition availability depends on Nintendo’s regional catalog
The Wind Waker Moderate: recognizable item-and-dungeon framework, but a different world structure High during ocean travel and island discovery Bright cel-shaded visuals and an adventurous tone Nintendo lists it among the series’ major releases; check your region for a current playable edition
A Link to the Past High in progression logic, but presented from a top-down viewpoint Moderate; the compact overworld gradually opens through items and story events Classic 16-bit fantasy with a focused, compact scale Nintendo identifies it among classic games covered by its retro service; Switch Online access is not universal by region
Link’s Awakening Moderate in item-gated dungeon design, low in 3D presentation Moderate; a compact island with deliberate sequence and shortcuts Colorful, toy-like presentation with a dreamlike story The Nintendo Switch version is currently listed; edition and storefront availability vary by region
Breath of the Wild Low in traditional sequencing, high in the feeling of discovering a mysterious world Very high; the game is built around choosing your own route Open landscapes, ruins and a restrained post-apocalyptic mood Switch and Switch 2 editions are listed by Nintendo; verify the edition sold in your region
Tears of the Kingdom Low in linear structure, but retains familiar exploration, abilities and puzzle-solving ideas Very high, with a larger and more systems-driven sandbox Expansive, imaginative and more mechanically complex A Switch release dated 12 May 2023 and a Switch 2 edition are listed by Nintendo; regional details vary

Majora’s Mask: the closest traditional 3D follow-up

Majora’s Mask is the best first recommendation for an Ocarina fan who wants familiar controls and a similarly authored adventure. Link still travels through a 3D world, acquires equipment that changes what he can do, solves dungeon puzzles and follows a story with distinct regions and characters. The game’s identity comes from what happens between those familiar beats.

Why it fits Ocarina fans

  • The same broad-era 3D design makes movement, targeting and combat immediately recognizable.
  • Mask transformations create new movement and puzzle options in the way Ocarina’s major items did.
  • Side characters have schedules, relationships and problems that make the world feel unusually alive.

What makes it different

The entire adventure runs on a repeating three-day cycle. You repeatedly return to the first day, preserving key progress while learning when events occur. That structure creates urgency and planning rather than Ocarina’s mostly linear pacing. The atmosphere is more unsettling and emotionally intense, so it is a poor choice if you want a relaxed, purely heroic tour of Hyrule.

Nintendo lists both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask in its classic Zelda catalog and Switch Online coverage. Because classic-game availability and service tiers differ by region, check your local Nintendo storefront before subscribing or buying.

Twilight Princess: darker, conventional 3D Zelda

Choose Twilight Princess when what you miss is the traditional console formula: a large central quest, clearly themed dungeons, new tools that unlock routes, and a serious story told through a realistic visual style. It is less experimental than Majora’s Mask and more comfortable for players who want the familiar Ocarina-era rhythm without a time loop.

Why it fits

The game presents a sequence of regions and dungeons in a recognizable progression. New equipment tends to have an immediate practical purpose, and dungeons are substantial destinations rather than optional puzzle spaces. The tone is darker than Ocarina’s, with a dramatic conflict and a more grounded art direction.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - For Nintendo Switch 2
  • Enhanced resolution, framerates, and load times optimized for Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Explore a massive open-air version of Hyrule with complete freedom.
  • Solve physics-based puzzles, survive dynamic weather, and uncover hidden secrets.
  • Customize your adventure with weapons, gear, and food you craft yourself.
  • Use the ZELDA NOTES app for bonuses, item sharing, and social features.

Trade-offs

Exploration is more directed than in the two open-world games. You generally follow the intended order of areas, so it does not provide the freedom to climb, glide or improvise solutions that defines Breath of the Wild. Nintendo’s catalog identifies Twilight Princess as a major series entry, but the edition you can play today depends on the hardware and regional catalog Nintendo currently supports.

The Wind Waker: brighter exploration and travel

The Wind Waker is the right answer when you love Ocarina’s sense of wonder but do not need realistic visuals. Its cel-shaded presentation, expressive characters and ocean setting create a very different surface while preserving the basic Zelda loop of exploring, finding tools and solving dungeons.

Why it fits

  • Islands work as distinct adventure spaces, each offering discoveries, characters or puzzles.
  • Travel itself is part of the game rather than a short transition between dungeons.
  • The visual style remains readable and expressive, even though it rejects Ocarina’s realism.

Trade-offs

The ocean makes the world feel broad, but much of that space is spent traveling between islands. If you want a tightly packed overworld with constant landmarks, the pacing may feel slower. Nintendo lists The Wind Waker among the series’ major releases; confirm which version, if any, is sold for your Nintendo hardware and region.

A Link to the Past: the best 2D bridge from Ocarina

A Link to the Past is the strongest choice when “feels like Ocarina” means item gating, dungeon sequencing and a compact overworld rather than polygonal graphics. It established much of the top-down structure that later games translated into 3D: find a tool, understand its new interaction, open previously inaccessible paths and use that idea repeatedly in a dungeon.

What you carry over from Ocarina

You get a clear adventure arc, a steadily expanding inventory and dungeons built around a central concept. The overworld is smaller than those in later 3D games, so routes and landmarks are easier to remember. Combat is viewed from above, but the logic of experimenting with items and reading environmental clues will be familiar.

Who should choose it

Pick it if you value purposeful progression and do not mind losing 3D movement. Nintendo identifies the game among classic titles covered by its retro service. Nintendo Switch Online availability, included systems and regional libraries can change, so verify the offering attached to your account’s country.

Link’s Awakening: a compact classic on Switch

Link’s Awakening is the compact option for an Ocarina player who wants traditional dungeons without committing to a much larger adventure. The Nintendo Switch version presents the island of Koholint with a colorful, miniature-like art direction while retaining item-based exploration and puzzle-focused dungeons.

Why it works

The island is deliberately sized for repeated visits. Each new item changes which rooms, caves and shortcuts you can reach, so progression feels carefully authored rather than sprawling. Nintendo’s official Switch description says Link must collect magical instruments across the land to awaken the Wind Fish. The remake also highlights Chamber Dungeons, a feature that lets you arrange dungeon rooms into custom challenges.

Trade-offs

This is not a substitute for Ocarina’s 3D camera, mounted travel or large-scale world. Its strengths are clarity, pace and concentrated puzzle design. If you want a self-contained classic that can be finished in shorter sessions, it is the most approachable choice in this list.

Product pick: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for Nintendo Switch is the practical recommendation for players who want a compact, modern presentation of classic Zelda structure. Confirm the edition and price in your local Nintendo store.

Breath of the Wild: the modern reinvention

Choose Breath of the Wild when you loved Ocarina’s first sense of entering an unknown world more than its fixed order of dungeons. Nintendo’s product page frames the game with the instruction, “Forget everything you know about The Legend of Zelda games.” That line captures the design change: instead of directing you through a single sequence, the game gives you a huge landscape and asks you to decide where to go, what to climb and which problems to solve first.

What remains familiar

Exploration still depends on noticing environmental clues, learning enemy patterns, collecting equipment and solving spatial puzzles. Shrines provide short challenges, while larger story locations offer more involved objectives. The pleasure of seeing a distant landmark and deciding to investigate it is a modern equivalent of the curiosity that drove many players through Ocarina’s fields and villages.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack - Nintendo Switch 2 [Digital Code]
  • Persistent internet and compatible smart device required. Data charges may apply.
  • QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.

What changes

  • Most of the world can be approached in multiple orders rather than through one prescribed route.
  • Weapons and equipment can break, so improvisation replaces the permanent-item assumptions of older games.
  • The landscape itself is a puzzle surface: climbing, gliding, weather and physics affect how you travel.

Nintendo’s 2017 product information records that “About 200 hours of gameplay can be tracked.” That is a tracking allowance from Nintendo, not a guaranteed completion time; your actual playtime depends on whether you pursue exploration, side activities or only the main objectives.

Product pick: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch is the clearest purchase recommendation for an Ocarina fan willing to trade linear dungeons for freedom. Nintendo lists Switch and Switch 2 editions; check your region for the exact edition and upgrade terms.

Tears of the Kingdom: a denser sandbox after the reset

Tears of the Kingdom is for players who want the open-ended foundation of Breath of the Wild with more layers to explore and more tools for manipulating the environment. Nintendo lists its Switch release date as 12 May 2023.

Why it fits an Ocarina fan who wants more

The game still rewards curiosity, environmental reading and self-directed routes, but it adds a broader set of systems for building, combining and altering objects. Nintendo specifically describes Recall, which sends an object in motion backward through time. Used creatively, that ability turns moving platforms, falling debris and enemy attacks into opportunities for traversal or problem-solving.

Should you play Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom if you prefer Ocarina?

Play Breath of the Wild first if you have not experienced Nintendo’s open-world approach. It is the cleaner introduction to climbing, gliding, breakable equipment and choosing your own route. Choose Tears of the Kingdom first only if you already understand that foundation and specifically want a denser sandbox with more construction and time-based manipulation. Neither restores Ocarina’s fixed dungeon sequence, so select them for discovery and experimentation rather than for a direct structural match.

Access on current Nintendo hardware

Nintendo’s current catalog lists Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 with a 2026 release listing, Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Link’s Awakening on Switch, and several classic Zelda games through Nintendo Switch Online. Catalog pages, included systems, upgrade paths and release timing can differ by country, so verify the listing in your local Nintendo eShop or Nintendo website before purchasing.

For classic titles, access may depend on the Nintendo Switch Online membership tier and the retro system library offered in your region. A game appearing in Nintendo’s general catalog does not guarantee that it is included with every subscription or available in every country.
