For a mostly static music playlist, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 video, CBR, RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: choose a bitrate your connection can sustain with headroom, test the complete audio-and-video feed, and confirm you have rights to livestream every track.

Recommended settings for a 24/7 music stream

Setting Recommended starting point What to know
Ingest protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. HLS is available to compatible encoders but has higher latency and stricter segment and playlist requirements. YouTube Help: encoder settings
Video codec H.264 A broadly practical choice. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingest.
Resolution and frame rate 1080p at 30 fps A sensible balance for mostly static artwork or a slowly changing visual. YouTube’s general recommendations are based on resolution and frame rate, not music genre.
Video bitrate 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 This is YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate, not a required minimum. At 720p30, its H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps. For AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30, the recommendation is 10 Mbps.
Rate control CBR YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) in its live encoder guidance.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz YouTube’s general stereo live-audio recommendation. Check the stream for clipping, silence, channel imbalance, and abrupt transitions.
SDR color and frame format Rec. 709, 8-bit, square pixels, progressive scan Use these YouTube recommendations if the encoder exposes the settings. Avoid overriding settings the encoder already handles correctly.

These recommendations reflect YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. A different codec, resolution, frame rate, or connection changes the appropriate bitrate. The complete recommendations are in YouTube Help’s encoder settings guide.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

The listed bitrate is not the only traffic your connection may carry. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and says the primary and backup stream bitrates, plus that headroom, should fit within your available upload capacity. Check your upload speed, then select a setting that remains reliable rather than pushing the connection to its limit. If capacity is marginal, lower the resolution or bitrate before starting the broadcast.

  • For H.264 at 1080p30, use YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation as a reference when evaluating upload capacity.
  • If you need a lighter H.264 stream, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at 720p30.
  • If using AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 1080p30, YouTube lists 10 Mbps.
  • If configuring backup ingestion, include its bitrate in your capacity calculation.

Run an upload speed test and make a test stream under the conditions you expect to use for the long broadcast. YouTube’s bandwidth guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Streaming tips.

Set up the encoder and verify the feed

  1. Activate live streaming in YouTube, if needed. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until just before a planned launch. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. In the stream’s settings, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in your encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields. Exact labels vary by encoder.
  3. Configure the video and audio. Start with the settings in the table, including RTMPS if the encoder supports it. For a still visual, 30 fps is generally a reasonable choice; do not raise frame rate without a reason and sufficient bandwidth.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It functions like a password for sending a feed to your stream. Do not share it publicly; reset it if it is exposed.
  5. Test the actual playlist and visual. Check that audio plays continuously, both stereo channels are present, volume is not clipping, and the visual is not frozen or unexpectedly changing. Review the test in YouTube Live Control Room.
  6. Monitor stream health after launch. Watch Live Control Room for health warnings or messages. For a long run, plan for power and network continuity, encoder restarts, and a way to notice silent playback or a stuck image. These are operational precautions, not special YouTube-required settings.

Plan for archives and viewer rewind

A 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed full-length replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends a local archive recording as a backup. If preserving each session matters, record locally and consider dividing programming into shorter sessions rather than relying on one continuous stream. See Archive live streams.

Viewer DVR is also not guaranteed across a very long broadcast: YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. Do not promise viewers that they can pause and rewind through the entire 24/7 run. Details are in Turn on DVR on live streams.

Clear music rights before going live

Bitrate settings cannot prevent a copyright interruption. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; if copyrighted material is identified and remains in the broadcast, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A strike can also end a livestream. You are responsible for having the necessary rights for live use, including music rights from relevant artists, labels, publishers, and other participants. Review Copyright issues with live streams and YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions.

Check that the license explicitly covers livestreaming, the territories where the stream will be available, any visual component, and archiving or replay if you plan to preserve it. Keep documentation. A license may not be enough to avoid an interruption: YouTube says the rightsholder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

Do not use YouTube Creator Music as clearance for a live playlist. YouTube’s usage guidance says its licensed and revenue-sharing tracks can be used in long-form videos, but not livestreams. The page describes availability for US creators in the YouTube Partner Program and says expansion outside the US is pending. Check the current terms at Understand Creator Music usage details.
