For a mostly static educational feed—slides, diagrams, or a fixed camera—start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 14 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and RTMPS. Use this profile only if your connection can sustain it reliably; YouTube’s figures are recommended live-ingest settings, not a guarantee of stream quality. For educational visuals that benefit from smoother motion, consider 1080p60 at YouTube’s recommended 17 Mbps H.264 bitrate instead.
Recommended starting settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward SDR educational channel, H.264 is a practical starting codec, with the following settings:
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p30 | Suitable for slides, diagrams, and relatively static visuals. |
| Video codec and rate control | H.264, CBR | Matches YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest recommendations. |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p30. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s listed stereo recommendation. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | The secure version of RTMP, recommended by YouTube. |
YouTube transcodes incoming live video for different viewer devices and network conditions. That does not remove the need to send a stable source stream: choose a profile your connection and encoder can sustain continuously, rather than selecting the highest available resolution by default.
Choose resolution and bitrate for the lesson
When 1080p30 is enough
Use 1080p30 for lessons built around text, slides, diagrams, or a fixed view with limited movement. It is YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps H.264 live-ingest target for that resolution and frame rate. Check that text is readable at typical viewing sizes; raising frame rate will not fix a slide that uses tiny type or low-contrast colors.

When to use 1080p60
Choose 1080p60 when the source contains movement that genuinely benefits from smoother motion, such as a detailed demonstration or fast on-screen action, and your upload connection has enough headroom to maintain it. YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingest bitrate for 1080p60 is 17 Mbps. If the connection cannot sustain that bitrate reliably, use a lower profile rather than risking repeated buffering or stream interruptions.
Lower-bandwidth alternatives
If a stable 1080p feed is not practical, YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60. Pick the frame rate based on the lesson’s motion and the encoder’s stability. These are live-ingest figures; do not substitute YouTube’s separate upload-video encoding targets.

The appropriate choice depends on connection reliability, whether 60 fps adds value to the educational visual, and what the encoder can maintain. YouTube recommends matching quality to connection reliability. Test the exact content and encoder before leaving a channel unattended.
Set the encoder and YouTube stream details
- Check channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is available for the channel before building an unattended workflow. YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Open Live Control Room and configure the stream. YouTube recommends letting it detect resolution and frame rate by default. A custom stream key can enable manual resolution settings. The encoder requires YouTube’s server URL and the stream key; handle the key like a password and do not share it publicly. See Manage live stream settings and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Enter the matching encoder profile. Set the chosen resolution and frame rate, H.264, CBR, the corresponding recommended bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Use RTMPS and AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for the profile above.
- Use sensible advanced video settings. YouTube’s recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies H.265 and 10-bit depth, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- Test and monitor the actual program. Run an upload-speed test and test with audio and video movement representative of the planned broadcast. Watch stream health and its messages during the test. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The official guidance is available on the encoder settings page and stream settings page.
- Choose latency for the audience. Use normal latency if viewers do not need real-time interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering and matters less when the streamer is not interacting with viewers. Review YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Check auto-start and auto-stop behavior. YouTube provides these controls for encoder streams. Confirm how they behave with your specific encoder before relying on them for unattended operation or recovery.
Plan continuity separately from archives
A 24/7 channel has two different needs: keeping a broadcast live and retaining a complete recording viewers can watch later. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance warns that streams longer than 12 hours should be recorded by the team for manual upload; DVR, which lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live broadcast, may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. These details mean you should not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete archive. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and Manage live stream settings.

If per-session archives matter
Plan recurring shorter live sessions and verify that each session ends and its archive is available as intended. The guidance does not specify a universal restart cadence, so determine a schedule that fits the channel and confirm it in Studio.
If the broadcast stays uninterrupted
Record the program locally and make a separate archive plan, including how and when to upload the recording. Do not rely on automatic archiving or DVR behavior for a very long live session.

Protect eligibility, originality, and monetization prospects
Respect channel and concurrency limits
YouTube’s current live-start guidance lists a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Confirm the limits and the channel’s live eligibility in Studio before adding simultaneous feeds. Livestreams remain subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. See Get started with live streaming.
Make the educational programming meaningfully original
Do not assume that continuous or looping content qualifies for monetization simply because it accumulates live viewing. YouTube’s monetization guidance says public long-form videos and archived livestreams can count as eligible public watch-hour sources, while livestreams that are not archived do not. Its channel monetization policies describe repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content” and apply the policy to live streams. These are policy considerations, not a prediction about an individual channel’s review outcome; build an original educational offering and check current eligibility and archive status in Studio. See YouTube’s qualified watch-hours explanation and YouTube Channel Monetisation Policies.

Use metadata for people, not as a substitute for useful lessons
YouTube says tags mainly help when content is commonly misspelled and otherwise play a minimal role in discovery. Use an accurate title and description that explain the educational topic and make the stream useful to its intended audience. See Manage live stream settings.
Common problems and fixes
- Stream health shows instability or viewers buffer: The source bitrate may be too demanding for the connection to sustain. Retest the upload connection and reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a profile it can maintain; monitor stream health during a representative test.
- The encoder reports a keyframe warning: Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video works but audio is missing or unsuitable: Check that the encoder is sending an audio track and that the stream uses a supported format. For stereo, use AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz as the recommended profile.
- Manual resolution settings are unavailable or inconsistent: YouTube recommends automatic detection by default; manual resolution settings may be enabled by using a custom stream key. Recheck the selected key and encoder configuration in Live Control Room.
- The long stream has no complete archive or usable rewind: A very long session may exceed the conditions for automatic archiving or DVR. Record locally and arrange a separate upload, or use shorter sessions when per-session archives are needed.
- A second broadcast will not start: Check the channel and stream-key concurrency limits and whether another session is already active.
