For a stereo YouTube Live sleep-sounds stream, start with 128 kbps audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. YouTube lists those as general stereo encoder recommendations; they are not a sleep-specific preset or a special rule for 24/7 broadcasts. For RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the source for these values.
Recommended settings for stereo sleep sounds
- Audio bitrate: 128 kbps.
- Sample rate: 44.1 kHz.
- Audio codec for RTMP/RTMPS: AAC or MP3.
- Channel layout: stereo, if your source is stereo.
These are YouTube Help’s general stereo live-encoder recommendations, checked in 2026. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate recommendation for sleep sounds or a distinct setting for a 24/7 stream. The recommendation is a practical platform baseline, not a claim that 128 kbps has been tested as optimal for every ambient recording.
How to set it in your encoder
- Choose the ingestion protocol. For an RTMP/RTMPS stream, select AAC or MP3 audio. If you are using HLS, YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as audio options; its HLS guidance also recommends 128 kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
- Set the audio output to stereo, 128 kbps, and 44.1 kHz. Encoder menu names vary, so look for audio codec, bitrate, sample rate, and channel layout in the stream or output settings. Avoid selecting 5.1 unless your source is actually produced in surround sound.
- Match the source to the output. Listen to the stream test using the same type of audio and movement you plan to broadcast. Check for clipping, silence, distortion, or unwanted level changes before going live.
- Run a test and check stream health. YouTube recommends testing before the broadcast and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. Review any encoder or live-control-room messages rather than assuming a selected bitrate guarantees a clean stream.
Stereo or 5.1: choose the format you actually have
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists 128 kbps for stereo audio and 384 kbps for 5.1 audio. It lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube says 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC. A typical stereo rain, fan, or ambient recording should remain stereo; selecting a 5.1 output does not turn stereo material into genuine surround sound. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings for the platform’s codec-specific guidance.
Audio bitrate is not video bitrate
The audio figure applies only to the sound track. YouTube’s encoder page gives separate video ingestion bitrate guidance according to video codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not treat the audio bitrate as the total stream bitrate or use it in place of the video setting. The stream’s total upload demand includes both audio and video.

Bandwidth and reliability for a long-running broadcast
A bitrate setting cannot compensate for an unstable upload connection. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, and note that the stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Check the available upload capacity for the complete stream, not just its audio track, and test under conditions similar to the intended broadcast. Keep monitoring stream health after it starts.
Bitrate guidance also does not establish that a channel is eligible for uninterrupted continuous operation, guarantee that a stream will remain connected, or specify a maximum broadcast duration. YouTube’s cited encoder and streaming guidance provides general setup advice, not a separate 24/7 sleep-stream rule.

Latency: usually a separate choice from audio quality
Latency is the delay between capture and playback, not an audio bitrate setting. YouTube explains that lower latency can increase playback buffering. For a sleep-sounds stream without real-time interaction, there may be little reason to prioritize the lowest possible delay; choose latency based on whether interaction matters and test playback.
