Use BtWQuests to see a story in order. It maps quest chains, prerequisites, your current position and what comes next. Add Storyline if you want a more readable, cinematic dialogue window, or Immersion if you want readable text with faster quest and gossip controls. For WoW Classic, Questie is the strongest practical choice for map markers, zone quest lists, search and a quest-history log. Blizzard’s built-in Lorewalking feature is useful for reviewing selected stories, but it is not a complete replacement for a chain tracker.
Which addon should you install first?
The right addon depends on whether your problem is finding the next quest, reading the dialogue or locating every objective. These addons overlap, but they solve different parts of following a long Warcraft storyline.
| Addon | Best for | What it adds | Important version note |
|---|---|---|---|
| BtWQuests | Following a campaign or quest chain in order | A journal-style map of connected quests, current progress, future quests and prerequisites; expansion-specific data modules list campaign and side-story lines | Install the data module for the expansion you are playing |
| Storyline | Reading quest text and enjoying the presentation | A replacement quest frame with animated 3D models, segmented dialogue, readable text controls and visual effects | Its CurseForge listing includes Retail and Classic versions; check the listing for the client you use |
| Immersion | Reading enough context without slowing down | A redesigned quest and gossip interface, customizable hotkeys and one-button progression while keeping the text visible | Its project page lists Retail and Classic support; verify the current file before installing |
| Questie | Classic map coverage and quest history | Quest starts, turn-ins, objectives, completed and available quests by zone, search and a “My Journey” log | The listing is Classic-focused; do not assume it is a current Retail story tracker |
If you want one answer for a Retail lore playthrough, start with BtWQuests. If you want the dialogue window itself to feel better, pair it with Storyline. If you are levelling in Classic, start with Questie and add a reading-focused interface only if you still want one.

BtWQuests is the closest match for the question, “Where am I in this story, and what quest comes next?” Its project description calls it “A quest journal that shows your progress within quest chains in a simple and easy to follow manner.” Instead of treating quests as isolated objectives, it displays the relationships between them.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What BtWQuests shows
- Your current quest or position in a chain.
- Quests that follow, including branches and connected story steps.
- Prerequisites that explain why a later quest is unavailable.
- Separate campaign and side-story lines supplied by expansion data modules.
This structure is valuable when a zone has several quest hubs, when a campaign pauses for a level or reputation requirement, or when a side story begins far from the place where you finished the previous chapter. A map marker can tell you where to go; BtWQuests explains why that destination belongs to the story.
How to use it for a lore playthrough
- Install BtWQuests and the data module for the expansion or content set you are playing. The base addon alone does not provide every expansion’s quest list.
- Open the BtWQuests journal from its addon interface and select the relevant expansion, zone, campaign or side-story category.
- Find the first incomplete node rather than jumping to the newest visible quest. Read the prerequisite links when a node is locked.
- Follow the chain in order, checking the journal after each turn-in. The current, completed and future steps make it clear whether you missed a prerequisite or simply have not triggered the next chapter.
BtWQuests is a planning and navigation layer, not a replacement for quest dialogue. It tells you the sequence and requirements, but the standard quest window still supplies the actual prose unless you add a presentation addon.
Storyline: the strongest choice for reading quest dialogue
Storyline is designed for players who want to read quests and care about Warcraft lore. Its project description says, “If you like to read all quests and are a fan of the World of Warcraft lore, this addon is for you!” It replaces the standard quest frame rather than merely adding another map icon.
Why Storyline feels different
- Quest dialogue is divided into readable segments instead of appearing as one dense block.
- Animated 3D character models give conversations a more deliberate presentation.
- Text controls make longer speeches easier to read at your own pace.
- Visual effects add emphasis to important moments without requiring a separate lore journal.
Choose Storyline when you already know where to go but keep skipping dialogue because the default frame is awkward or visually noisy. It is especially effective alongside BtWQuests: BtWQuests provides the chapter order, while Storyline makes each conversation easier to absorb.
What Storyline does not do
Storyline is not primarily a prerequisite graph or completion database. It improves the act of accepting and reading a quest; it does not replace BtWQuests’ chain overview. If you are looking for a list of every step in a campaign, install the tracker separately.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Immersion: readable context with faster questing controls
Immersion also replaces the dated quest and gossip frames, but its emphasis is a quicker interaction loop. Its project description says it is intended to help players “actually read and understand what’s happening on your questing adventure.” Customizable hotkeys and one-button progression let you move through routine clicks without abandoning the text.
When Immersion is a better fit than Storyline
- You want quest and gossip text to remain visible, but you do not want a heavily theatrical presentation.
- You frequently accept several quests in a hub and want keyboard shortcuts or rapid progression.
- You want one consistent interface for both quest dialogue and NPC gossip.
- You prefer to tune the amount of automation and keep control over which steps advance immediately.
Immersion works well for a player who is levelling quickly but still wants enough context to understand the objective. It can also complement BtWQuests: use the journal to identify the correct chain, then use Immersion to read and accept each step efficiently.
Controls and pacing
Because Immersion exposes customizable hotkeys and one-button progression, review its settings before starting a lore-heavy session. Set the interaction speed and keybinds so that advancing a conversation is intentional; otherwise a fast key press can move past text you meant to read. The exact settings and available options can change with the current addon release, so use the configuration panel shipped with your game client.
Questie: the practical story companion for WoW Classic
Questie is the best fit when your main difficulty is finding Classic quests and remembering what you have already done. Its project page lists quest start points, turn-ins, objectives, completed and available quests by zone, a searchable database and a “My Journey” log. Those features make it a map and history layer rather than a cinematic dialogue replacement.
Why Classic players benefit from Questie
- Zone views show where quests begin and where their objectives or turn-ins are located.
- Search helps locate a quest by name when the original NPC or zone is forgotten.
- Completed and available quest indicators reduce backtracking through crowded hubs.
- “My Journey” gives you a personal record of progress across your character’s questing history.
Classic quest design often sends you between zones or leaves a follow-up with an NPC you encountered several hours earlier. Questie’s map notes and history reduce that friction. It does not, however, make it a current Retail equivalent: its listing is focused on Classic-era game flavours, so check the supported client before installation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Optional objective arrows
Questie’s page identifies TomTom as an optional companion for objective arrows. Treat that as an optional navigation choice, not a requirement for Questie itself. Install only the components you need, especially on a Classic client where a minimal interface can make older quest text easier to notice.

Best addon combinations by playstyle
Retail campaign completionist
Install BtWQuests plus Storyline. Select the campaign or side-story in BtWQuests, use its prerequisite links to find the next valid step, and read each conversation through Storyline. This combination separates two jobs cleanly: the journal prevents you from losing the sequence, while the dialogue frame improves the actual lore experience.
Retail player who wants speed and context
Install BtWQuests plus Immersion. Let BtWQuests answer “what is next?” and let Immersion handle quest and gossip interactions with shortcuts. This is a good compromise when you want to understand the plot but do not want every conversation to interrupt your levelling route.
Classic quest historian
Install Questie first. Use its zone list, search and “My Journey” log to reconstruct what you have completed and locate missing starts or turn-ins. Add Storyline or Immersion only after confirming that the chosen addon supports your exact Classic client.
Player who wants to read everything
Use BtWQuests as the index and Storyline as the reading surface. Keep the journal open between chapters, not necessarily during every conversation, so the interface does not compete with the text. Mark your own stopping points after major campaign nodes rather than assuming a zone boundary is a complete story chapter.

Installation and compatibility checklist
Addon support is tied to the game client and the addon’s current release. Before installing, check the project page for the exact Retail or Classic flavour you launch.
- Confirm whether you play Retail, Classic Era, a progression Classic realm or another supported client.
- Open the addon’s current CurseForge project page and read the listed game versions. Storyline and Immersion list Retail and Classic support, Questie is presented as Classic-focused, and BtWQuests relies on expansion data modules.
- For BtWQuests, install the base addon and the matching expansion module. Without the relevant module, a campaign may appear incomplete even though the addon itself is working.
- Restart the game after enabling the addon. In the character-select AddOns screen, enable out-of-date addons only when you understand that a client update may have broken an interface component.
- Log in with the character whose story you want to track and open the addon’s journal or quest frame before accepting new quests.
- After a major game patch, revisit the project page and update the addon and any BtWQuests data module together.
How to avoid losing your place in a quest chain
Start with the chain, not the map marker
A map icon answers where an objective is, but not whether it is part of the campaign you intend to follow. In BtWQuests, open the chain and identify the first incomplete step. In Questie, use the zone list and search to verify the quest name before travelling.
Read prerequisites instead of forcing a locked step
A greyed or unavailable node generally means an earlier quest, level, zone, faction or campaign condition has not been met. Follow the displayed prerequisite connection, complete that branch, then return to the main line. Picking up unrelated quests to make a hub look complete can make your personal notes harder to interpret.
Keep dialogue and tracking tools separate
Storyline and Immersion change how dialogue is presented; BtWQuests changes how the chain is understood. If a conversation window looks different after installation, that is expected. If the next quest is missing from the chain, check the data module and prerequisite path rather than changing the dialogue addon.
Check the client after updates
Interface changes can temporarily mark an addon as out of date or hide a button. Verify the addon’s listed game version and current release before deleting saved data or starting the chain over. Updating the relevant module is safer than assuming the character lost progress.

Versions and activity indicators
CurseForge reported 206,129,998 total Questie downloads at crawl time in 2026. Its page listed version 11.37.1 as the latest release on August 26, 2026. Those figures describe the page snapshot, not a guarantee that every Classic client is supported indefinitely.
Storyline’s page reported 1,425,004 total downloads at crawl time in 2026 and listed Retail release 3.5.1 on March 1, 2026. Download totals indicate adoption, not quality or compatibility with your particular game version. Always use the file and game-flavour labels on the current project page.
Blizzard’s Lorewalking feature: useful, but different
Lorewalking is an official Blizzard feature for reviewing selected story elements with Lorewalker Cho. Blizzard describes each Lorewalking storyline as a collection of previous quests plus a few new ones, presented through the Lorewalking interface. It is useful when you want a focused recap of a particular piece of Warcraft history without replaying every quest.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use Lorewalking as a curated lore review, not as a universal quest-chain database. BtWQuests is broader because it indexes campaign and side-story chains and shows prerequisites and future steps. Lorewalking can complement an addon when you want a guided summary; it does not replace the tracker when your goal is to find the next live quest on a character.
Final recommendation
For most Retail players following story quests, install BtWQuests first and add Storyline if reading presentation matters most. Choose Immersion instead when you want readable text with a faster, customizable interaction loop. For WoW Classic, choose Questie for its maps, zone coverage, search and “My Journey” history, then verify any additional addon against your exact Classic client. Use Blizzard’s Lorewalking when you want a focused official recap rather than a complete, character-specific quest tracker.
