For a small ebook-only store, start with Digital Download by Rara Themes, which is designed to work with Easy Digital Downloads (EDD). If you plan to sell ebooks alongside print books or bundles, Book Store Pro is the clearest WooCommerce-focused choice. Pixel Ebook Store suits a broader publishing catalog, while ThemeForest offers more design-led paid alternatives that need individual compatibility and licensing checks. No independent 2026 speed or sales-conversion comparison establishes one theme as universally best; choose based on how you deliver files, what you sell, and whether the theme is maintained for your WordPress and commerce-plugin versions.
How to choose a theme for selling ebooks
A WordPress theme controls presentation; your commerce plugin handles the transaction and, in the case of digital products, file delivery. A theme can make product pages, covers, author details and checkout easier to use, but it does not by itself provide a complete ebook storefront.
- Choose the commerce path first. EDD is a natural starting point for a catalog made mostly of digital downloads. WooCommerce is the more flexible fit when ebooks share a store with physical books or other products.
- Check the complete purchase path. Preview product pages, cart or checkout, and customer-account pages with your chosen theme and plugin; compatibility claims do not guarantee that every page looks right for your store.
- Evaluate the book presentation. Look for readable typography, prominent cover images, author details, previews and clear purchase calls to action. EDD’s guidance recommends product-focused layouts, room for trust badges and guarantees, and storefront templates with space for products (EDD storefront design guidance).
- Check operations and upkeep. Confirm the behavior you need for filters, accounts, coupons, bundles, payment extensions and taxes. Record the theme’s latest update, WordPress and PHP requirements, editor support, and compatibility with the current commerce plugin.
- Assess cost and support terms. A free theme can reduce initial expense; a paid theme may include specialized templates or support. Verify the license and how long support lasts before purchase.

Choose between EDD and WooCommerce
Use EDD for a primarily digital catalog
EDD is purpose-built for digital sales. Its official plugin listing describes support for ebooks, PDFs, digital guides, whitepapers and other publications (Easy Digital Downloads). Its documentation covers expiring download links, download limits and IP tracking for purchased files (EDD file-download controls).
Those controls govern delivery rather than theme appearance. Pair EDD with a theme that renders the product, checkout and account pages cleanly, then verify the actual customer flow before opening sales.

Use WooCommerce when the catalog extends beyond downloads
When customers can buy ebooks alongside paperbacks, hardcovers or bundles, WooCommerce offers a broader product-store setup. Book Store Pro is the most explicitly mixed-catalog option in this comparison. Pixel Ebook Store also states compatibility with both WooCommerce and EDD, which may be useful for a publishing-focused catalog.
When a special ebook theme is—and is not—needed
You do not need a theme labeled “ebook” to sell a PDF. The essential requirement is a workable combination of a commerce plugin that handles digital products and a theme that presents the product and purchase flow clearly. A specialist theme can save setup time if it already includes useful layouts for covers, author information, previews or book catalogs. A general WooCommerce theme may be sufficient if it displays your products and checkout well.

Installation checks before committing
- Confirm the WordPress requirement. Compare your site version with the theme’s stated minimum. Book Store Pro’s product page specifies WordPress 6.9 as its minimum.
- Check maintenance and compatibility. Review the latest update date and test the theme with the editor, WordPress version and commerce plugin you intend to use. Recent directory updates are useful signals, not guarantees of future support.
- Test a complete order. Preview the storefront on desktop and mobile, place a test purchase, and check that checkout, customer access and delivery behave as expected.
- Review file-delivery settings. For EDD, decide whether download links should expire and whether to limit downloads or use IP tracking, based on the needs of your products and customers.
- Read commercial terms. For paid themes, confirm license scope, update access and support duration on the vendor’s current listing.
What theme comparisons cannot tell you
Available sources do not establish a controlled, independent 2026 ranking of these themes for speed or conversion rates. Active-install counts and marketplace sales are popularity indicators, not proof that a theme is faster or sells more. Base the decision on verified compatibility, the features your catalog needs, delivery controls and maintenance rather than an unsupported performance winner.
