The best Wordle alternative depends on what you want to change: try Connections for word grouping, Strands for a themed word search, Spelling Bee for word building, or Octordle if you want Wordle-style feedback across several boards. For a different kind of deduction, consider Waffle, Semantle, or Worldle. These games keep a puzzle in your routine but do not all play like Wordle.

Choose by the kind of puzzle you want

Game Core mechanic Good fit if you want…
Connections Group words that share a common thread. Spotting categories and relationships rather than testing letter positions.
Strands Find hidden words that reveal a theme. A word-search format with a thematic clue.
Spelling Bee Make words from seven letters. Building multiple words from a shared letter set.
Octordle Solve eight five-letter words on eight boards; each guess applies to every board. Keeping Wordle’s letter-feedback loop while tracking multiple targets.
Waffle Rearrange letters to solve crossing words. Spatial letter logic instead of entering guesses in sequence.
Semantle Use meaning-based guesses to approach a target word. Semantic deduction rather than spelling clues.
Worldle Use clues about a country or territory. Geography-themed deduction.

The New York Times Games catalogue also includes Wordle, Crossword, Mini Crossword, and Pips, where players place dominoes. The publisher describes its aim as offering “puzzles for all skill levels that everyone can enjoy playing every day.” See the NYT Games catalogue.

Which Wordle alternative should you try first?

For a daily word puzzle from The New York Times

Start with Connections, Strands, or Spelling Bee if you want to keep a daily puzzle habit but change the thinking involved. Connections is about finding shared categories; Strands is a themed hunt for hidden words; Spelling Bee asks you to form words from seven letters. They are distinct formats, not Wordle clones.

For more Wordle-style letter deduction

Octordle preserves the familiar task of solving five-letter words through letter feedback, but spreads each guess across eight boards. Its official page lists 13 guesses, so a wrong or useful guess affects the state of several puzzles at once. That creates more simultaneous tracking; whether it feels harder than another game depends on the player.

Check free access before building a routine

NYT Games access depends on the game and the feature. The NYT Help Center lists Wordle, Connections, Connections: Sports Edition, Crossplay, Pips, Strands, and Sudoku among games accessible without a Games subscription; Spelling Bee has limited free access. Companion tools and full features require a Games or qualifying All Access subscription. The complete subscription library is broader, and pricing should be checked on the current NYT Games subscription information page rather than assumed from an old quote.

Match the game to your routine

  • Want one short word challenge? Try a NYT daily format such as Connections or Strands; each changes the task without adding multiple Wordle boards.
  • Want to preserve letter feedback but increase tracking? Try Octordle’s eight-board format and decide whether the added simultaneous solving suits you.
  • Want replay beyond a single daily puzzle? Octordle explicitly lists archive and unlimited modes alongside daily play.
  • Want to get away from spelling clues? Choose grouping, themed searching, rearrangement, semantic similarity, or geography based on the kind of reasoning you enjoy.
  • Need a free option? Check the current access terms for the particular game and feature; a publisher’s free daily puzzles do not necessarily mean every tool or full library is free.
