The right choice also depends on your game build. The Essential Mods List discussed here targets Next Gen 4.04, while PC Gamer reported that The Witcher 3 Remastered arrived on PC in late September 2026 and that many mods were updated around its release. Check each mod’s current requirements for your specific build before installing it.
Choose a mod by the change you want
“Graphics mod” can mean several different things. A texture overhaul changes the detail on surfaces and objects; a lighting mod changes the appearance of illumination; a color-grading or post-processing mod changes how the rendered image is processed. These categories can produce different results, so start with the visual effect you want rather than assuming one mod improves every part of the image.
- More surface detail: Consider HD Reworked Project for supported builds.
- Different environmental lighting: Look at Better Vanilla Lighting Changes or Light Rewrite in the 4.04 guide.
- Color and post-processing changes: Consider RenoDX only if your renderer and display meet its requirements.
- A coordinated visual setup: Use Natural Witcher 3 Enhancer Next Gen as an illustrated example, not as proof that one preset works for every installation.
Best options by visual goal
HD Reworked Project: more detailed assets
HD Reworked Project is an asset-detail overhaul, not primarily a lighting or color preset. Its author describes changes to thousands of textures, models, materials, and other assets intended to improve detail and consistency. CD Projekt Red’s official Next-Gen notes separately identify the project as community-made or community-inspired and describe other visual improvements included in that update.
For The Witcher 3 Remastered, the case is different: PC Gamer reported on August 27, 2026 that the project creator’s work would be officially available in the remaster and that the mod would no longer be needed there. That is a reason to check what your Remastered build already includes before installing an older edition of the mod; it is not confirmation that every version or later patch has identical files.

Better Vanilla Lighting Changes and Light Rewrite: lighting edits for 4.04
The Essential Mods List for Next Gen 4.04 names Better Vanilla Lighting Changes and Light Rewrite as lighting options. They are candidates to investigate if your goal is to change environmental illumination rather than add texture detail. The guide’s inclusion does not establish compatibility with Remastered or every subsequent patch, so consult each mod’s current page and installation notes for your exact build.
RenoDX: conditional color grading and post-processing
RenoDX is a separate post-processing and color-grading route, not a general-purpose lighting replacement. The 4.04 guide says it is for the DX12 renderer, requires ReShade, and is appropriate only for players with an HDR monitor; RenoDX’s own page also states that DX12 is required. Treat those as prerequisites, not optional enhancements.

The author describes changing the processing order for effects such as bloom, sunshafts, blur, and grading. The guide distinguishes HDR and SDR behavior, so do not expect identical results across display types. Verify the current instructions and settings on the RenoDX mod page before setup.
Natural Witcher 3 Enhancer Next Gen: an illustrated combined look
Natural Witcher 3 Enhancer Next Gen documents a visual setup with images and states that the mods shown were tested in 4.04. Because its example combines multiple components, it is best treated as a reference for a particular coordinated look—not as a standalone mod guaranteed to provide the same result on another build or installation. Check the Natural Witcher 3 Enhancer page for the components and requirements it currently specifies.

Compare compatibility before installing
The available recommendations do not amount to a universal ranking: the 4.04 guide, individual mod pages, and Remastered reporting describe different releases and requirements. Use this checklist to compare a candidate with your setup:
- Game build: Confirm whether the instructions support Next Gen 4.04, Remastered, or the older release you use.
- Effect category: Decide whether you want asset detail, lighting edits, or post-processing and color grading.
- Renderer: Check whether the mod requires DX11 or DX12; do not assume files or instructions transfer between them.
- Display and tools: RenoDX’s listed requirements include DX12, ReShade, and an HDR monitor for the HDR path described by the 4.04 guide.
- Dependencies and patches: Read the individual page’s installation notes. The 4.04 guide includes a compatibility patch for combining Brothers in Arms with HD Reworked Project, illustrating why combinations need checking.
The guide also distinguishes renderer-specific files for some entries, including separate DX11 and DX12 files for Novigrad Sewers Lighting Improved. Follow the current mod page’s instructions for the renderer you actually use instead of reusing a path or file choice from a different setup.

What the official Next-Gen notes do—and do not—establish
CD Projekt Red’s Next-Gen update notes list HD Reworked Project among community-made or community-inspired mods and identify visual changes such as updated environmental lighting, sky textures, vegetation and water improvements, mesh improvements, selected visual effects, 4K character textures, and higher-resolution character self-shadowing. Those notes document the Next-Gen update; they are not a complete specification of the 2026 Remastered release.
For current release context, PC Gamer reported on October 1, 2026 that more than 450 mods had been released or updated around the Remastered PC release. That number describes mod activity, not graphics quality or performance. Check current game and mod pages for patch-level support rather than treating a 4.04 guide as a Remastered compatibility list.

The sources cited here do not provide comparable benchmark results for these lighting and color options. There is no apples-to-apples FPS cost or measured image-quality score established for the recommendations, so a precise performance ranking would be unsupported. Your result can depend on the game build, renderer, display, chosen settings, and which mods are installed together.
