These options are not interchangeable. OBS and Streamlabs encode locally on your Windows PC; cloud playout services are relevant when the stream consists of prerecorded material. What 4K 60fps requires from YouTube and your connection
Bitrate depends on the video codec
YouTube’s current live encoder settings page recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 4K/2160p 60fps and 50 Mbps for H.264. The stated minimums are 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube ingest settings, not proof that a connection with the same nominal upload speed will sustain a stable stream. Leave upload headroom for network variation and other household or office traffic, then test the actual route.
Use compatible output settings
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS is supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS where available.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps. Confirm the encoder’s output is actually 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps if that is your target.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for stereo and recommends 128 Kbps; its advanced settings list 44.1 kHz stereo.
YouTube defaults to detecting resolution and frame rate. Manual selection is available with a custom stream key. YouTube does not offer its low-latency optimization for 4K/2160p; 4K streaming is optimized for quality at normal latency.

Set up OBS Studio for a continuous YouTube stream
- Check the PC and workload. OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic requirements. Those are compatibility requirements, not a certification for 4K60 or 24/7 use. CPU and GPU load varies with encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS itself cautions that a compatible system may still be unable to stream the workload you choose.
- Create or configure the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Set the stream’s intended resolution and frame rate, and choose a custom stream key if you need manual resolution/frame-rate selection. YouTube exposes a stream URL and key in stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, and reset it if exposed.
- Open OBS settings and configure output. Select an encoder and codec supported by your PC and the YouTube ingest settings. Set CBR, use the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation for that codec, and set a two-second keyframe interval. Select RTMPS if your workflow supports it.
- Match video output to the target. Configure the output resolution as 3840 × 2160 and frame rate as 60 fps only if the PC can sustain that workload. Confirm these values in the encoder output rather than assuming the source video or canvas setting guarantees them.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, enter the YouTube server/stream URL and stream key in the streaming settings, or use an available account connection workflow. Never share screenshots or logs that reveal the key.
- Run a representative test before relying on it. Include motion and audio similar to the real program. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, stream health, and messages; verify playback on the devices your viewers use. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream continuously and testing failover for encoder workflows.
- Plan for unattended operation. Decide who or what will notice a dropped stream, encoder crash, power interruption, or Windows restart. YouTube provides auto-start, auto-stop, and DVR options in stream settings; choose these deliberately for the event workflow rather than assuming they provide PC or encoder recovery.
When Streamlabs Desktop is a better fit
Streamlabs Desktop is a reasonable alternative if guided setup and integrated creator features matter more to you than a lean, highly configurable workflow. Its published requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 and 8 GB RAM as minimums, and recommends 16 GB or more alongside stronger CPU/GPU and SSD resources. These are vendor system requirements, not a guarantee of stable 4K60 streaming or unattended uptime. Choose it for its workflow, then perform the same full-load test and monitoring plan you would use with OBS.
When a PC encoder is the wrong tool
If your channel plays uploaded recordings or a playlist on repeat, an encoder running on a home PC means that PC, its power, and its network connection all become part of the broadcast chain. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded cloud streams, including Full HD and 4K 30/60 FPS; the listing alone does not verify service-level uptime, price, or every operational detail. What makes a 24/7 stream stable?
Stability is a whole-system outcome, not a feature an encoder can promise. It depends on sustained encoding headroom, a dependable upload route, power, Windows behavior, monitoring, and a recovery plan. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; OBS notes that requirements vary with the workload. - Test with the actual scenes, motion, audio, resolution, frame rate, and encoder you intend to use.
- Watch YouTube stream health and messages during the test, and check for dropped frames or encoder overload in your software.
- Test the recovery path: what happens after a lost connection, encoder restart, or YouTube ingest interruption?
- Keep the stream key private and reset it if compromised.
- For a continuous channel, arrange a real monitoring and response plan rather than assuming a successful initial start means the stream will remain healthy.
Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream buffers
Check whether the selected codec’s bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation and whether the upload connection has headroom above the encoder bitrate. Test at the intended time and on the same network path; a speed-test result alone does not prove the route to YouTube ingest is stable.
The encoder overloads or frames are dropped
Reduce scene complexity or encoding load, check GPU/CPU utilization, and confirm the chosen encoder is supported by the hardware. If the PC cannot sustain 4K60 under representative load, lower resolution or frame rate rather than treating the basic OS/GPU requirements as a performance guarantee.

The stream connects but the output is not 4K60
Verify the encoder output resolution and frame rate, not only the source file or OBS canvas. Check whether YouTube is detecting settings automatically or whether you need a custom stream key for manual selection, then confirm the Live Control Room preview.
The stream stops after a YouTube or network interruption
Check the stream key, encoder connection, network route, and YouTube stream settings. Reconnect or restart the encoder according to your recovery plan, and test the failover behavior before depending on the stream unattended. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop are event controls, not a guarantee that a crashed PC or encoder will recover.

Audio is missing or out of sync
Confirm that the active audio source is included in the scene and encoder output, and use a supported stereo format such as AAC with the recommended 128 Kbps setting and 44.1 kHz sample rate. Test speech, music, and other representative audio before going live.
