No single Windows setting reliably stops every game freeze or stutter. Start by checking updates and resource use, then test only settings that fit your Windows version, GPU setup, game mode, and power situation. Change one thing at a time and replay the same scene so you can tell whether it helped.
How to troubleshoot game stuttering before changing settings
Freezes and stutters can have several causes, including background activity, low storage, outdated software, or hardware limits. Microsoft recommends checking more than one possible cause rather than relying on a single toggle. Its Windows performance guidance also notes that updates can include fixes and performance improvements.
- Check for Windows updates: Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Review Optional updates for relevant driver updates, and restart if Windows requests it.
- Use supported graphics drivers: Identify your GPU, then get graphics drivers through your PC manufacturer or GPU maker’s supported channel. Avoid third-party driver-download sites.
- Inspect resource use during the problem: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Check Processes and Performance while the game is stuttering. Close only apps you recognize and are not using; avoid disabling Windows services wholesale.
- Check storage and restart: Low available storage can affect performance. Windows offers Storage Sense, temporary-file cleanup, and drive optimization; remove only files you understand. Restart, then test with the game and necessary launcher open.
Which Windows 11 gaming settings are worth trying?
These options are conditional: a setting may not apply to your game or hardware, and none is a guaranteed fix. Before each change, note the current value. Test the same game scene after each adjustment, and revert a change if performance worsens.
Choose the intended GPU for a game
On a PC with multiple GPUs, Windows 11 can assign a graphics preference to an individual game. This is useful when a laptop or hybrid system is using the wrong GPU; it should not be expected to improve performance if the game already uses the intended dedicated GPU.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game under custom options. If it is not listed, add or browse to the game’s executable.
- Choose Options, select High performance if appropriate, and save.
- Restart the game and check that same scene again.

Try Optimizations for windowed games when the game qualifies
This Windows 11 option targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. It is not a general fix for fullscreen games. Microsoft says the feature changes supported presentation behavior to reduce frame latency and enable supported features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Default settings, enable Optimizations for windowed games.
- Restart the game and test it in the windowed or borderless mode you normally use.
If a particular game behaves worse, open that game’s options in Graphics settings, turn the optimization off for that game, and retest.
Check Game Mode and capture activity
In Windows, open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and check whether it is enabled. Microsoft describes Game Mode as intended to optimize system performance during gaming, but does not provide a universal performance guarantee or quantified stutter reduction. If you record gameplay, also review Settings > Gaming > Captures and Game Bar capture activity; recording may use resources, although the cited Microsoft guidance does not quantify its effect.

When should you change Windows power mode?
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Choose Best performance for a plugged-in, performance-intensive session if greater power use and heat are acceptable. Balanced is more appropriate when battery life matters. Microsoft describes Best performance as maximizing performance and Balanced as balancing performance with battery use; which choices appear depends on the device and manufacturer.
If the power-mode control is unavailable, a custom plan may be selected. Microsoft’s power mode instructions suggest returning to a standard Balanced plan through Control Panel. Do not treat Best performance as a default for unplugged laptop gaming.

How can you check DirectX without downloading an installer?
Press Windows key+R, enter dxdiag, and inspect the System tab for DirectX and driver information. Microsoft says Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include the latest DirectX version available for that OS release and directs users to Windows Update for updates. A game’s requirements may still specify particular supported hardware or API needs. Do not download random DirectX installers or “optimizer” tools as a substitute for diagnosis. Software settings cannot overcome every hardware limitation. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance cautions that older PCs may not improve significantly from these steps; hardware upgrades may be a longer-term option. Use Task Manager and the game’s own symptoms to identify a constrained component before considering an upgrade. The available guidance does not establish a universal RAM, SSD, cooling, or peripheral purchase as the answer. Also note that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft; the Windows 11-only graphics options described above do not apply to Windows 10.
