What a Windows 11 taskbar replacement actually changes

1. ExplorerPatcher: the widest free taskbar restoration
ExplorerPatcher’s official wiki lists controls for selecting a Windows 10 or Windows 11 taskbar, showing labels, using small icons, restoring classic context menus and adjusting Start behavior. That combination makes it the strongest match for someone asking for an old-style taskbar rather than only an alternate Start menu.
What it can restore
- Labels and ungrouping: Text can be shown with taskbar buttons, making several windows distinguishable without opening a preview.
- Smaller taskbar icons: Useful on compact displays or when the classic, denser layout is the priority.
- Taskbar generation: You can select a Windows 10-like or Windows 11-like taskbar behavior where the project supports it.
- Context menus and Start behavior: Older right-click commands and additional Start controls are exposed through the project’s settings.
Important technical limits
ExplorerPatcher is a reimplementation, not Microsoft’s original taskbar code. Its taskbar implementation notes explicitly state that it does not cover every feature of the original taskbar. A setting that looks familiar may therefore behave differently from Windows 7 or Windows 10, and a future Windows build can break a previously working combination.
The project’s official releases page says GitHub Releases is the only official distribution channel. It documents tested Windows 11 24H2-era builds and warns that Smart App Control can prevent explorer.exe from starting with new versions. It also advises that SentinelOne should not be present during installation. Treat those warnings as prerequisites, not optional troubleshooting.
Who should choose it
Choose ExplorerPatcher when labels, ungrouping, smaller icons, classic menus and taskbar positioning matter more than a vendor-managed support experience. It is also the best no-cost route when you want several legacy behaviors at once. Avoid it if you cannot keep a recovery route or if your organization blocks shell modifications.
2. Open-Shell: the focused classic Start menu
Open-Shell Menu is the lighter choice when the Start menu is the main complaint. Its official site lists classic styles modeled on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What the focused approach means
Open-Shell concentrates on Start rather than replacing the entire taskbar. You can obtain a traditional menu structure while leaving Windows 11’s taskbar, notification area and window buttons largely as Microsoft provides them. That narrower scope usually makes the decision easier for users who do not need labels, ungrouping or an old right-click menu.
Because it is not a full taskbar replacement, do not select Open-Shell expecting it alone to recreate every Windows 10 taskbar behavior. If labels, grouping or taskbar position are essential, compare ExplorerPatcher or one of the broader commercial products instead.

Who should choose it
Choose Start11 when you prefer a commercial product with several designs, folder menus and a settings interface maintained as a package. It is a better fit than a free shell reimplementation for users who value integrated configuration and are willing to pay for it.

StartAllBack takes the broadest rollback-style approach among the choices here. The vendor describes a Windows 11-focused product covering Start, taskbar, Explorer and wider interface styling.
What the broader scope changes
A broad shell treatment can make more of Windows feel consistent with an older release, but it also touches more components than a Start-only utility. That can be useful if Explorer menus, taskbar appearance and Start behavior all feel wrong at once. - Record the build: Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and OS build under Windows specifications.
- Create a recovery route: Make sure you can reach Windows Recovery Environment, have another administrator account available, and know how to uninstall the utility from Settings or Control Panel.
- Close competing shell tools: Remove or disable another taskbar or Start replacement before installing a second one. Multiple programs modifying explorer.exe can produce conflicts.
- Use only official downloads: For ExplorerPatcher, use the project’s GitHub Releases page; for the other products, use their canonical project or vendor sites.

Installation and first configuration workflow
The exact screens vary by release, but the safe sequence is the same for all four choices.
- Download the installer from the official page for the product you selected.

- Close open File Explorer windows and save work before installation; the shell may restart.
- Install with an administrator account and allow explorer.exe to restart if requested.

Updates, breakage and recovery
Before a Windows feature update
- Check the utility’s release notes against the new Windows build.
- Export or record settings if the product provides no backup mechanism.
- Keep the official installer for a compatible version and a way to uninstall from recovery mode.
- Expect shell behavior to change after a major feature update, even if the utility worked on the previous build.
If the taskbar or desktop does not load
- Wait briefly for explorer.exe to restart; do not repeatedly power-cycle the computer.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, choose Task Manager, and use Run new task to start
explorer.exeif Task Manager is available. - Use Windows Recovery Environment or Safe Mode to uninstall the shell utility if explorer.exe repeatedly fails.
- Reboot into normal Windows and install a release that explicitly supports your build, or return to the stock Windows shell.
ExplorerPatcher’s release documentation specifically mentions possible explorer.exe startup failures and Smart App Control blocking startup with new versions. Do not disable security protections indiscriminately; remove the incompatible build or use a supported release instead.
If only one feature is wrong
Undo the last setting you changed, restart explorer.exe, and test again. If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, first compare the utility version with the new OS build before changing unrelated settings. A clean baseline makes the cause easier to isolate.
