1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes after that date. That makes a trusted, lightweight app selection more important—but apps cannot replace an unsupported operating system. If your hardware can run Windows 11, upgrading is the safer long-term choice; otherwise, keep Windows 10 offline where practical and install software only from sources you trust.
For common jobs, these are the strongest picks this week: PowerToys for workflow improvements, VLC for local media, 7-Zip for archives, Bitwarden for passwords, and either LibreOffice or Microsoft 365 for office work.
Quick comparison
| App | Best for | Windows 10 fit | Account required | Offline use | Update source | Cost model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PowerToys | Window management, renaming and shortcuts | Designed for Windows power users; check the current release requirements | No Microsoft account required for the utilities themselves | Yes, after installation | Microsoft Store, GitHub releases or WinGet | Free and open source |
| VLC | Playing local video and audio | Available as a Windows Store app | Not stated | Yes | Microsoft Store listing | Free |
| 7-Zip | Opening and creating compressed archives | Practical choice for Windows PCs; confirm the current installer supports your edition | No | Yes | Trusted publisher download | Free |
| Bitwarden | Password storage and autofill | Desktop app and browser-extension approach; verify current Windows 10 support | Yes, for a Bitwarden account | Limited: vault access depends on prior sign-in and synchronization | Publisher downloads and browser extension stores | Free and paid account options |
| LibreOffice | Offline documents and spreadsheets | Desktop office suite; check the current Windows 10 build requirements | No | Yes | Trusted publisher download | Free |
| Microsoft 365 | Microsoft-format files and collaboration | Windows desktop apps require a supported subscription or license | Yes | Core desktop editing can work offline, with periodic sign-in requirements | Microsoft installation and update service | Subscription service |
Microsoft recommends downloading programs only from trusted publishers and retail websites. Store delivery is the simplest route for Store apps; classic Win32 utilities are usually best obtained from the publisher’s own verified site.
PowerToys: the best productivity upgrade
PowerToys is Microsoft’s free, open-source collection for power users and developers. It is the most broadly useful install here because it improves several everyday tasks without replacing your existing programs.
#1 Best Overall
What it does well
- Arrange windows into repeatable layouts with FancyZones-style window management.
- Rename many files at once using search-and-replace rules and regular expressions.
- Look up keyboard shortcuts instead of memorizing every Windows command.
- Add other focused workflow utilities as Microsoft releases them.
How to install it
- Open the Microsoft Store and search for PowerToys, or use the PowerToys release page on GitHub.
- As an alternative, install it with WinGet from an elevated or standard terminal using the package name shown by Microsoft’s installation documentation.
- Open PowerToys Settings and enable only the utilities you need; unnecessary modules can add menu and background-process clutter.
PowerToys is a good fit when you want Windows-native tools and do not mind occasional updates. It is less suitable for a very low-resource machine where every background process matters.
VLC: the dependable local media player
VLC is the straightforward choice for playing files stored on an old PC, USB drive or network share. VLC UWP appears in Microsoft’s current Top free Apps catalog, but that catalog is a changing snapshot rather than a permanent ranking.
Rank #2
- 15.6" diagonal, HD (1366 x 768), micro-edge, BrightView, 220 nits, 45% NTSC.
Why choose it
- It handles a broad range of common audio and video files in one player.
- It works offline once installed, so local playback does not depend on a streaming account.
- The Store route simplifies installation and updates for users who prefer Microsoft-managed delivery.
Choose the Store listing carefully and avoid look-alike downloads from unfamiliar publishers.
7-Zip: essential archive handling
7-Zip is the practical utility to install before you encounter a ZIP, 7z or other compressed download. It can extract archives and create compressed files for storage or transfer.

- 10th Generation Intel Core i5-1035G1 processor
- 12GB system memory for full-power multitasking
- 256GB Solid State Drive
- 15.6" Micro-edge touchscreen display
Best use cases
- Open downloaded project files, drivers and document bundles.
- Create an archive to send several files together.
- Use stronger compression formats when the recipient also has compatible software.
Download it from the 7-Zip publisher’s trusted site rather than an aggregator. During setup, review file-association choices so the program does not take over formats you prefer to open elsewhere.
Bitwarden: safer password management
Bitwarden is the password-manager pick in this list. It is most useful when paired with its Windows application and browser extension, allowing generated passwords and autofill across websites.
Rank #4
- Latitude 7480 Laptop 14"
- Intel Core i7 6th Gen i7-6600U -Core Processor 2.6GHz (3.4GHz With Turbo Boost)
- 256 GB SSD Hard Drive & 16GB Memory

- Wireless Wifi & Bluetooth
Trade-offs to understand
- An account is required to synchronize a vault between devices.
- You must protect the account’s master password and recovery information; a password manager is not a substitute for those safeguards.
- Browser-extension convenience is central to the experience, so check that your preferred browser still supports the current extension on Windows 10.
- Offline access is narrower than with a media player or office suite because synchronization and account sign-in are part of the design.
Bitwarden is a strong choice if you want one managed vault across devices. Someone who refuses online accounts may prefer a locally managed password database, but that is a different security and backup responsibility.

These products solve overlapping problems but suit different working styles. LibreOffice is the offline, no-subscription option; Microsoft 365 is the ecosystem and collaboration option.
Best Value
Choose LibreOffice when
- You need Writer, Calc and Impress without a recurring subscription.
- Your documents must remain usable without an internet connection.
- You mainly create and edit standard office files locally.
File fidelity can vary when complex Microsoft Office documents move between suites, especially with advanced layouts, macros or unusual fonts. Test important templates before switching a household or business workflow.
Choose Microsoft 365 when
- You regularly collaborate in Microsoft’s online services.
- Maintaining Microsoft-format layout and compatibility is more important than avoiding a subscription.
- You want the same account, files and desktop applications across supported devices.
Microsoft 365 is the better ecosystem fit, but its subscription cost and sign-in requirements are part of the decision. Core desktop editing can continue offline after setup, although Microsoft periodically requires account verification.
Quick Recap
What to install after reinstalling Windows 10
- Run the final available Windows updates and install current hardware drivers from the computer or component manufacturer.
- Install a browser from its trusted publisher or the Microsoft Store, then enable its security updates for as long as that browser supports Windows 10.
- Add PowerToys if you need window layouts, bulk renaming or shortcut help.
- Add VLC for local media and 7-Zip for compressed downloads.
- Set up Bitwarden before creating accounts on new services, and record recovery information securely.
- Install LibreOffice or Microsoft 365 based on your collaboration and compatibility needs—not both by default.
- Remove trialware and duplicate utilities, then create a backup before loading personal data.
How to choose safely on an unsupported system
- Prefer the Microsoft Store for apps that have a verified listing and suit your needs.
- For Win32 tools, use the publisher’s own site and verify the publisher name, HTTPS connection and digital-signature information where available.
- Reject installers that bundle unexplained “optimizers,” browser changes or security software.
- Keep a separate backup of documents and password-manager recovery information.
- Do not treat a new app, antivirus product or browser as a replacement for Windows security fixes that ended with Windows 10 support.
