Best for guided troubleshooting: eero Pro 6E. Its eero app can run a network health check, detect when the network is down, explain the problem and suggest next steps. Its hardware light is also easy to read: solid white means online, while solid red means offline.
TP-Link Deco is the better fit if you want app controls over the mesh nodes and their lights. Google Nest Wifi Pro makes the most sense for a household already using Google Home. The important qualification is that none of these systems should be assumed to identify every failure—modem, router, mesh link and client device—with equal detail. Their documented capabilities differ, and Deco features in particular vary by model and software version.
Quick verdict
Choose eero Pro 6E when the priority is an app that explains what may be wrong and leads you through a fix. eero’s support documentation explicitly describes a network health check that can detect an outage, tell you why the network is down and guide you through repair. The same documentation gives unambiguous hardware states: a solid white LED means the eero is online and a solid red LED means it is offline.

Choose Google Nest Wifi Pro if your home already uses Google Home and you want status-light meanings documented in Google’s support material. A slow-blinking yellow light indicates a network error or lost WAN connectivity. Google’s integration advantage is most relevant when adding another app would make troubleshooting less convenient.
All three approaches are useful, but they answer different questions. An LED can tell you that a device is offline even when your phone cannot reach the app. An app can provide context and client information that a light cannot. Neither should be treated as proof that a particular cable, modem, mesh backhaul or client adapter is the cause unless the app explicitly identifies it.
What “app-based diagnostics” actually tells you
A router app is a management and observation layer, not a laboratory test. It can report what the router or mesh system currently knows about its internet connection, nodes and connected devices. The useful distinction is whether it merely labels a component as offline or also explains a likely cause and proposes a next action.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Guided diagnosis versus a status label
A status label such as “offline” confirms an observed state. It does not necessarily distinguish a failed modem from a disconnected Ethernet cable, an upstream service outage or a powered-down router. A guided health check is more useful because it combines the state with an explanation and a recovery path. eero is the clearest documented example in this comparison: its support page says the app can detect when the network is down, tell you why and guide you through fixing it.
WAN, node and client are different layers
When you troubleshoot from a phone, separate four layers:
- WAN or internet service: the connection coming from the modem or another upstream device.
- Gateway router: the unit connected to the modem and responsible for routing traffic.
- Mesh node and backhaul: a satellite unit and the link it uses to reach the gateway.
- Client device: a phone, computer, television or other device using Wi‑Fi.
An app may show a node or client as disconnected while the WAN is healthy. Conversely, every client can appear affected when the gateway has lost its upstream connection. Reading the layers in that order prevents you from replacing a working router when the actual fault is the modem or service.
Why the hardware light still matters
The phone app depends on at least one working path to the network, the local router or the vendor’s service. If the phone is on cellular data, the router has lost power or cloud access is unavailable, the app may not load the information you need. A front-panel light remains available in those situations. That is why explicit color and blink definitions are more than cosmetic: they provide a fallback check before you open an app or move cables.

Comparison of the documented diagnostic and indicator features
| System | Documented app behavior | Documented indicator meaning | Controls and qualifications | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| eero Pro 6E | The eero app can run a network health check, detect when the network is down, explain why and guide you through fixing it. | Solid white means online; solid red means offline. | The guided workflow is the clearest documented in this comparison. The support material does not establish that every failure will be isolated to a modem, mesh link or client. | People who want the app to explain a problem and suggest next steps. |
| TP-Link Deco | The Deco app provides controls for the system and its indicators; the exact functions depend on the Deco model and software version. | Red indicates a lost internet connection or an error. | TP-Link’s manual documents LED controls. Verify the exact model because capabilities and labels vary. | People who want visible node state and control over the lights. |
| Google Nest Wifi Pro | Google documents status-light meanings through its support material; the strongest documented value here is interpreting the light in the Google Home environment. | A slow-blinking yellow light indicates a network error or lost WAN connectivity. | Light colors and patterns are model-specific; use the Nest Wifi Pro definitions rather than a generic Google Wi‑Fi chart. | Households already managing Wi‑Fi with Google Home. |
The table compares documented behavior, not independent performance testing. No dated, named quantitative study was found for diagnostic accuracy, repair time or the percentage of faults each app can identify. “Best” therefore means best fit for the troubleshooting experience described by the manufacturers, not a laboratory ranking.
eero Pro 6E: the strongest documented guided workflow
What the app does
eero’s support guidance describes a network health check that can detect when the network is down, tell you why and guide you through fixing it. That combination matters when you do not know whether to restart the modem, inspect the gateway or investigate a node. Instead of presenting only an offline badge, the workflow is intended to provide a reason and a next step.
The wording is deliberately qualified: the app can detect and guide, but that does not promise that every outage has a unique diagnosis. A service-provider outage, intermittent cable, failing power supply and a client-only problem can produce overlapping symptoms. Treat the suggested action as a controlled first test, then confirm whether the result changes.
How to use the eero health check without making the problem worse
- Open the eero app while connected to the affected network or, if necessary, use cellular data so the phone can reach the app.
- Run the network health check and read the stated reason before unplugging anything.
- Follow one suggested action at a time. If the instruction is to restart equipment, restart the upstream modem and then the gateway in the order specified by the app.
- Wait for the system to settle before judging the result. A mesh system may need time to bring nodes back and re-establish links.
- Test a known client device. If one device works while another does not, the remaining problem may be client-side rather than a total network outage.
Those steps preserve useful evidence. Rebooting every component at once can make a temporary recovery look like a diagnosis and can hide which device was actually at fault.

Reading the eero light
A solid white eero LED means the unit is online. A solid red LED means it is offline. If the app is unreachable, start with that physical observation: check power and Ethernet connections, then determine whether the gateway or a satellite is showing the state. The light cannot by itself prove that an individual client has internet access, but it can quickly distinguish an online eero from one that has lost connectivity.
Who should buy it
- Choose it when a guided explanation and suggested recovery step matter more than extensive manual controls.
- Choose it when household members other than the network administrator need an understandable status check.
- Do not assume the health check replaces checking the modem or contacting the internet provider during an upstream outage.
TP-Link Deco: strong indicator controls, model-by-model verification required
What is documented
TP-Link documents a red Deco light as a lost internet connection or an error. Its Deco app manual also documents controls for the LED behavior. That combination is useful in a mesh system where several nodes may be in different rooms: you can keep indicators visible when diagnosing a problem or adjust them when light at night is a concern.
The limitation is important enough to affect the buying decision. TP-Link warns that features vary by model and software version. A setting described in a general Deco manual may not appear on every unit, and the wording of an indicator can differ between generations. Confirm the exact model’s manual and current app support before relying on a particular diagnostic screen or light control.

A disciplined Deco troubleshooting sequence
- Identify which Deco is connected to the modem and which units are satellites.
- Check the gateway’s physical indicator first. A red state means a lost internet connection or an error according to TP-Link’s documentation.
- Check satellite indicators one at a time. A single affected satellite suggests a local power or mesh-link issue; a red gateway suggests starting with the upstream connection.
- Open the Deco app and review the controls and status screens available for your exact model and software version.
- Change only one setting or cable at a time, then allow the mesh to settle before checking the result.
- If the gateway remains in an error state, test the modem or upstream service independently and contact the provider if its connection is also unavailable.
This sequence uses the light as a physical cross-check rather than treating every red node as proof of the same cause. A satellite can lose its path to the gateway even when the gateway still has internet access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWho should buy it
- Choose Deco if visible node state and control over the indicator behavior are central to your routine.
- Choose it only after confirming that the exact Deco model supports the app functions you expect.
- Do not compare a feature from one Deco generation with another without checking software requirements.
Google Nest Wifi Pro: a clear light vocabulary inside Google Home
Interpreting the documented yellow pattern
Google’s support material for Nest Wifi Pro documents several light colors and patterns. The key troubleshooting signal is a slow-blinking yellow light, which indicates a network error or lost WAN connectivity. “WAN” here means the connection toward the internet service, so the first checks should be the modem, its Ethernet cable and the service itself rather than a single client device.
Because light behavior is model-specific, use the Nest Wifi Pro definitions for Nest Wifi Pro. A color chart for a different Google Wi‑Fi product is not a reliable substitute.
When it is the practical choice
Nest Wifi Pro is most convenient for people who already use Google Home for their household devices and do not want a separate management environment. Its documented light meanings provide a physical status check when the phone cannot display the network. The available evidence does not establish a guided, cause-and-next-step health-check workflow equivalent to eero’s, so buyers who primarily want app-led remediation should weigh that difference.
A safe first response to a slow-blinking yellow light
- Confirm that the Nest Wifi Pro unit has power.
- Inspect the Ethernet connection between the gateway and the modem or upstream device.
- Check whether the modem itself shows a service or WAN fault.
- Open Google Home after the physical checks and review the current network status.
- Restart equipment only in the order recommended by Google or the internet provider, then wait for the light pattern to change before testing clients.
Can an app tell whether the modem, router, mesh node or device is at fault?
Sometimes, but not universally. The documented evidence supports a more careful answer:
Recommended Free Tools
- Modem or WAN: Nest Wifi Pro’s slow-blinking yellow signal explicitly includes lost WAN connectivity. eero’s health check can explain why the network is down, but the cited support wording does not guarantee that it will name the modem as the failed component.
- Gateway router: eero’s solid red state identifies an offline eero; Deco’s red state identifies a lost internet connection or error. These are strong signs to inspect the gateway path, not proof of a single failed part.
- Mesh node: A node-specific status can help you notice that one unit differs from the gateway. The supplied manufacturer material establishes Deco’s indicator controls and eero’s health-check workflow, but it does not promise identical backhaul diagnostics for every node and model.
- Client device: A router app may show that a device is connected or absent, but the cited documentation does not establish that these three systems can diagnose every phone, computer or television fault. If the gateway is online and only one client fails, test that client’s Wi‑Fi, DNS, VPN and network settings separately.
The most dependable method is correlation: compare the physical light, the app’s network status and a second client device. If all clients fail and the gateway indicates an outage, investigate WAN and modem connections. If only one client fails while the gateway and another client work, focus on that client.
A practical troubleshooting workflow that works with any of the three
1. Establish the scope
Ask whether every device is affected or only one. Test a phone and a computer if available. Note whether the failure is total loss of internet, slow service, or inability to join Wi‑Fi. These observations prevent a client problem from being mistaken for a router failure.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
2. Read the hardware indicator
Record the exact color and pattern before restarting. For this comparison, eero solid white means online and solid red means offline; Deco red means lost internet or an error; Nest Wifi Pro slow-blinking yellow means a network error or lost WAN connectivity. The pattern is evidence, so capture it before changing cables.
3. Check the upstream path
Inspect power and the Ethernet cable between the modem and gateway. If the modem has its own service indicator, compare it with the router’s state. A gateway cannot restore an internet service that the modem is not receiving.
4. Use the app’s documented function
Run eero’s network health check when using eero. In Deco, open the controls and status views supported by the exact model and software version. In Google Home, interpret the Nest Wifi Pro status in the context of the documented light pattern. Do not assume that a menu shown in a different model’s manual exists on yours.
5. Change one variable
Restart one device or reseat one cable, then wait for the mesh to settle. A simultaneous reboot of modem, gateway and every satellite destroys the information that could have identified the failing layer.
6. Escalate with useful evidence
If the upstream device remains unavailable, contact the internet provider with the time of the outage and the modem’s state. If the gateway is online but one node repeatedly fails, report the node’s light pattern, location and distance from the gateway. If only one client fails, use that device’s network troubleshooting rather than replacing the mesh system.
Software, account and cloud considerations
App diagnostics are software features, so availability can depend on the vendor account, app release, firmware and internet access. The Deco documentation explicitly warns that features vary by model and software version. That warning is a reason to verify compatibility before purchase, not a reason to assume that every current Deco screen applies to every unit.
Keep a hardware fallback plan. Learn the light meanings for the exact model, keep the modem and gateway accessible, and record cable locations. If the app is unavailable, the indicators and a second client device still let you establish whether the failure is local or upstream. When the app returns, its history or health check can add context to those observations.

Buying decision: match the diagnostic style to your household
Pick eero Pro 6E for guided simplicity
The strongest documented fit is eero Pro 6E if your primary question is, “What should I do next?” The health-check workflow is explicitly designed to detect a down network, explain the reason and guide a fix. The solid-white and solid-red states are simple enough for nontechnical household members to understand.
Pick TP-Link Deco for control over visible mesh state
Deco is a better match when you want to manage indicator behavior and inspect node status, provided the exact model and software version support the controls you need. Its red indicator has a documented meaning, but the model variation means you should verify the manual before treating a feature as guaranteed.
Pick Google Nest Wifi Pro for an existing Google Home setup
Nest Wifi Pro is the logical choice when Google Home is already the household’s control center. Its documented light patterns, including slow-blinking yellow for a network error or lost WAN connection, provide a useful physical diagnostic language. Choose it for ecosystem continuity rather than assuming it offers the same guided remediation as eero.
Prioritize clear lights when outages are common
If you frequently troubleshoot with the app unavailable, prioritize a system whose light meanings you can remember and whose nodes are easy to see. Hardware indicators are especially valuable during power interruptions, modem failures and local Wi‑Fi dead zones.
Limitations to keep in mind
- No manufacturer documentation cited here provides an independent accuracy rate for diagnosing faults.
- The documented eero workflow explains and guides, but it does not promise a unique diagnosis for every physical failure.
- Deco’s controls and screens can change with model and software version.
- Nest Wifi Pro light meanings apply to that model; other Google Wi‑Fi hardware may use different patterns.
- A router-level status cannot, by itself, repair a defective client device, an upstream service outage or damaged cabling.
These limits do not make app diagnostics unhelpful. They define how to use them: as a fast, structured first assessment paired with physical indicators and a controlled test of another device.
