For most Windows households, Bitdefender Total Security is the strongest paid replacement for Webroot. Microsoft Defender is the best no-cost baseline, Norton 360 is the most practical family-suite alternative, and Avast Free Antivirus or AVG Antivirus Free are the leading free third-party choices. ESET is a good fit when you want more control and can accept a slightly lower performance score in the latest lab test.

Those recommendations are based on independent Windows testing available in 2026, not on a direct head-to-head trial of every product. Retail prices, renewal rates, device limits and bundled features change by country and plan, so confirm them on the live product page before buying.

Quick verdict: which Webroot alternative should you choose?

Why replace Webroot?

Webroot is a cloud-oriented Windows antivirus, but many households reassess it when a subscription renews, a computer is replaced, or they want a broader security suite. The practical question is not whether Webroot can detect threats in general; it is whether another product offers stronger independently measured protection, a better fit for your devices, or clearer value for your family.

Switching also changes how your computer is protected. Microsoft Defender is integrated into Windows and activates when another compatible antivirus is removed. Third-party products may add their own web filters, ransomware controls, identity tools, parental controls, VPN access or password managers, but those extras differ by edition. A replacement should therefore be selected by the problem you are trying to solve, not by a feature checklist copied from an unrelated plan.

What the latest independent tests actually show

AV-TEST’s April 2026 Windows home-user evaluation

AV-TEST evaluated 14 Windows security products during March and April 2026. It used current public versions, default settings, cloud updates and realistic real-world threats. Each product could earn up to 6 points for protection, 6 for performance and 6 for usability, for a maximum of 18. AV-TEST’s TOP PRODUCT threshold was 17.5 points.

Bitdefender Total Security, Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer), Norton 360, Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free each received the maximum 6 protection, 6 performance and 6 usability. ESET Security Ultimate received 6 protection, 5.5 performance and 6 usability. A 5.5 performance score is still strong, but it indicates more measured system impact in that test than the products receiving 6.

AV-Comparatives’ 2026 and 2025 context

AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 consumer malware-protection test used 20 products and 10,000 recent malware samples, while also measuring false positives. Its article identified Avast, AVG, Kaspersky, Norton, Fortect, Bitdefender, G Data, Microsoft, Total Defense and VIPRE as Advanced+ products, a designation combining strong protection with very low false-positive levels.

The 2025 annual summary covered 19 Windows consumer products and assessed real-world threats, recent malware, targeted attacks, slowdown and false alarms. Results from different test rounds are not interchangeable: a product can change version, settings or cloud detections between reports. Treat the 2026 results as the current snapshot and use older reports only for broader context.

Why false positives matter at home

A false positive is a legitimate file or website incorrectly flagged as dangerous. Frequent false alarms can block a tax document, game mod, driver or work tool and train family members to click through warnings. That is why AV-Comparatives’ false-positive measurement complements AV-TEST’s protection, performance and usability scores. A product that catches threats but repeatedly interrupts ordinary work is a poor household fit.

Bitdefender Total Security: best paid all-rounder

Bitdefender is the clearest paid replacement when you want a strong independent test record without managing Windows’ built-in controls yourself. It achieved 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s April 2026 table and was listed among AV-Comparatives’ Advanced+ products in March 2026.

Who should choose it

  • Households that want a conventional paid antivirus with broad protection controls.
  • Users who prefer one dashboard rather than configuring Windows security components separately.
  • Families comparing a paid suite with a high current protection and performance score.

What to verify before purchase

The product name alone does not establish the number of covered devices, the length of the license, renewal pricing or which privacy and account tools are included. Confirm the region, device count, operating-system support, automatic-renewal setting and cancellation process. If you are considering a listing such as Bitdefender Total Security 5 Devices 1 Year, verify that the seller states all four details and explains how the license is delivered.

Microsoft Defender: the strongest no-extra-cost baseline

Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into supported Windows installations and earned 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s April 2026 evaluation. AV-Comparatives also named Microsoft among its Advanced+ products in March 2026. For a Windows household that does not want another subscription, that is a credible baseline rather than a token fallback.

When Defender is enough

  • Your computers run supported Windows versions and receive security updates.
  • You keep real-time protection, cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission configured according to your risk tolerance.
  • You do not need a paid suite’s additional identity, parental or privacy services.
  • Everyone using the computer can recognize suspicious links, unexpected attachments and fake support messages.

Where Defender may not fit

Defender does not automatically provide every service sold in a third-party suite. Device management across a mixed household, parental controls, a password manager or a bundled VPN may require separate products or a different plan. Those needs should be evaluated independently; a high lab score does not mean every family feature is included.

Norton 360: a family-suite alternative

Norton 360 received 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s April 2026 table and appeared in AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 Advanced+ group. It is the most natural choice in this list for readers who want a suite intended to cover several family devices and centralize multiple security services.

Choose the exact plan, not just the brand name

Different Norton 360 editions can cover different numbers of devices and include different combinations of backup, privacy, parental or account features. Device counts, introductory offers and renewal charges are commercial terms, not established by the laboratory tests. Read the plan comparison for your country, record the renewal date and check how to turn off automatic renewal before installing it on every household computer.

Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free: free third-party choices

Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free each achieved 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s April 2026 evaluation. AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 article also named both as Advanced+ products. They are sensible options when you want a separately managed antivirus without paying for a license.

Advantages of a free third-party product

  • Protection is managed in a dedicated security application rather than only through Windows settings.
  • You can keep a paid suite out of the household budget while retaining independent lab-tested coverage.
  • A free product can be useful on a secondary Windows computer that does not need premium services.

Trade-offs to consider

Free editions can present upgrade prompts or reserve certain privacy, support and device-management features for paid plans. The 6/6/6 scores do not tell you how many devices a free account can manage or how often promotional notices appear. Review those behaviors during setup and disable nonessential notifications where the product allows it.

ESET: a control-focused paid option

ESET Security Ultimate scored 6 for protection, 5.5 for performance and 6 for usability in AV-TEST’s April 2026 table. It was included in AV-Comparatives’ consumer testing. Current ESET HOME plan names can differ by country, so the equivalent product may be presented as ESET HOME Security Essential or another regional edition.

Why experienced users consider ESET

ESET’s appeal is the amount of control it exposes over scans, detections, exclusions and notifications. That can suit someone who wants to tune a security policy instead of accepting a heavily automated interface. The measurable compromise in the cited test is performance: 5.5 rather than 6. The difference is not a guarantee that you will notice slowdown, but it is a reason to test your own older or heavily used computer after installation.

Is Bitdefender better than Webroot?

Current independent evidence favors Bitdefender as the safer replacement choice, but it does not establish a universal head-to-head win. Bitdefender earned 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s April 2026 test and Advanced+ recognition from AV-Comparatives in March 2026. Webroot appears in a separate PassMark benchmark, so the scores are not directly comparable.

PassMark’s June 2025 report, titled Webroot Essentials vs. Eight Competitors, states that Webroot funded the report and selected the products and performance metrics; PassMark independently conducted the testing and analysis. That makes the report useful performance context, but independent AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives protection results deserve greater weight when ranking a replacement. If your priority is independently measured protection and low false positives, Bitdefender has the stronger current evidence. If your priority is a particular Webroot workflow or light cloud client, verify that the replacement behaves well on your own hardware before removing Webroot.

Which antivirus has the least performance impact?

In AV-TEST’s April 2026 table, Bitdefender Total Security, Microsoft Defender, Norton 360, Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free all received the maximum 6 performance points. ESET Security Ultimate received 5.5. The test does not provide enough information to rank the five products tied at 6, and a laboratory average cannot predict every older processor, hard drive or software mix.

How to check performance on your computers

  1. Before switching, note typical startup time, the delay when opening large files and any application that already feels slow.
  2. Install only one real-time antivirus. If the installer detects Webroot or another security product, allow the supported removal process to complete and restart when requested.
  3. Repeat the same tasks after updates and a full scan. Compare observable delays rather than relying on a single idle-memory number.
  4. If performance drops, schedule full scans outside work or gaming hours, remove duplicate security extensions and review exclusions only for files you trust.

What to choose for several family devices

Start with the household’s operating systems and the number of devices, then choose a plan that explicitly licenses all of them. Norton 360 is the family-suite recommendation in this guide because its current independent results are strong and its product line is designed around broader household coverage. Bitdefender may also fit if the selected Total Security license covers every computer and mobile device you intend to protect.

Do not assume that a one-year license covers an unlimited number of devices or that a Windows license automatically includes phones, tablets or Macs. Check the exact edition, regional terms, supported operating systems, account requirements and renewal price. If a child’s account needs web filtering or screen-time controls, verify that those controls exist in the selected plan and work on the child’s operating system.

Free versus paid: a practical decision

Question Free baseline or free antivirus Paid suite
Core malware protection Defender, Avast Free and AVG Free all have 6/6/6 AV-TEST results in April 2026. Bitdefender and Norton also have 6/6/6; ESET has 6/5.5/6.
Cost certainty No antivirus license purchase, although free products may promote upgrades. Introductory and renewal pricing can differ; verify current terms.
Multiple devices Coverage and account management vary; confirm each product’s limits. Multi-device plans are available, but device counts differ by edition.
Extra services Do not assume parental, privacy, VPN or password-manager features are included. Some plans bundle them; confirm each service and its limits.
Support and controls Usually self-managed, with features varying by product. May offer broader controls or support, depending on the plan.

How to switch from Webroot safely

  1. Inventory the household. List each Windows version, user account, computer age and security-sensitive activity such as banking, work access or gaming.
  2. Check subscription terms. Record Webroot’s expiration date and disable renewal only after confirming you will not leave a computer unprotected during the transition.
  3. Download from the verified vendor or an authorized retailer. Avoid repackaged installers and confirm the edition, region, device count and license duration.
  4. Save recovery information. Keep product keys, account credentials and any password-manager export in a secure location before uninstalling software.
  5. Remove Webroot using its supported uninstall path. Follow the on-screen restart instructions. Do not run two real-time antivirus engines together.
  6. Install the replacement and update it. Allow cloud updates, definition updates and the first security scan to finish before normal use.
  7. Review protection settings. Confirm real-time protection, web protection, ransomware or controlled-folder features and notification settings are enabled as appropriate.
  8. Test normal tasks. Open work files, connect printers, launch games and visit trusted sites. Investigate any warning before adding an exclusion.
  9. Repeat on every covered device. Sign in with the correct household account and verify that each computer appears in the product dashboard if one is provided.

Common switching problems and fixes

Windows says another antivirus is active

Restart after uninstalling Webroot or the previous antivirus. Windows Security should then show which provider supplies real-time protection. If two products still claim control, remove the leftover product with its official cleanup utility or contact that vendor’s support rather than deleting security files manually.

A trusted application is blocked

Read the detection name and file path first. Update the application from its legitimate source, submit a suspected false positive through the antivirus interface and add an exclusion only after verifying the publisher and file hash. Broad exclusions such as an entire Downloads folder weaken protection.

Scanning makes an older PC unusable

Let the first scan complete when the computer is idle, then schedule recurring scans for overnight. Check for duplicate browser extensions and unnecessary startup modules. If the issue persists, compare the product’s documented minimum requirements with the computer and test Defender or another 6-point performance product.

The license does not cover every device

Recheck the order confirmation and plan name. A device limit, operating-system restriction or regional edition may explain the mismatch. Do not install a trial on additional family computers assuming they will be included automatically; upgrade the license or choose a plan that explicitly covers them.

A decision framework for your household

  1. Need no purchase? Start with Microsoft Defender and keep Windows updated.
  2. Want the strongest paid all-round evidence? Select Bitdefender Total Security after confirming device count and renewal terms.
  3. Need a family-oriented suite? Compare the exact Norton 360 plans available in your country and verify every included service.
  4. Need free third-party management? Compare Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free based on notifications, account requirements and device limits.
  5. Want granular controls? Evaluate ESET’s current HOME edition and accept that its latest AV-TEST performance score was 5.5 rather than 6.
  6. Have unusual hardware or software? Install on one representative computer first, update fully, run a scan and test your daily applications before rolling out the product household-wide.

What the test results cannot tell you

Laboratory scores are snapshots under defined conditions. They do not establish current retail prices, renewal charges, cancellation experiences, support quality, battery life on every laptop, or the usefulness of a particular VPN or password manager. They also do not guarantee protection against every future scam or a malicious browser extension installed by a user.

Keep automatic operating-system and browser updates enabled, use unique passwords with multi-factor authentication where available, maintain offline or versioned backups and teach household members to question urgent payment requests. Antivirus is one layer of home security, not a substitute for safe account and backup practices.

Bottom line

Bitdefender Total Security is the best-supported paid Webroot alternative for a typical Windows household in 2026. Microsoft Defender delivers an unusually strong no-cost baseline, Norton 360 is the leading family-suite direction, Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free are credible free third-party replacements, and ESET is the control-oriented option. Choose only after matching the plan’s device coverage, operating-system support, renewal terms and bundled features to the computers and people you actually need to protect.
