The most reliable Starscourge Radahn setup keeps you at a normal or medium roll, uses a weapon you can punish with quickly, and leaves enough stamina and equip load for Torrent-based movement. Aim for level 60–70, bring a weapon upgraded to about +6 or better for solo play, and exploit Radahn’s susceptibility to Pierce and Scarlet Rot. Fast bleed or frost weapons, thrusting weapons, bows, and quick-casting magic can all work; the best choice is the one that matches how safely you can attack between his combos.
Wear armor for survivability without crossing the heavy-load threshold, then choose talismans for your actual attack pattern or the damage type killing you. The fight is designed around mobility, NPC reinforcements, and repeated short punish windows rather than trading long melee strings.

Best weapons for Starscourge Radahn
Weapon choice should solve one of two problems: reaching Radahn safely or finishing an opening before his next chain begins. A weapon with excellent paper damage is a poor choice if its recovery animation leaves you trapped in a sweep or gravity pull. Favor attacks you can stop after one or two hits, then return to Torrent or a safe angle.

Spears and rapiers let you deal Pierce damage while keeping more distance than a typical greatsword. Pierce is one of the weaknesses listed for Starscourge Radahn, so a thrusting weapon directly aligns your damage type with the encounter. Their forward-reaching attacks are useful when Radahn’s legs or side are exposed, and their short recovery makes it easier to disengage before a follow-up sweep.

- Use them when: you prefer measured melee, shield-and-spear play, or attacks from the edge of Radahn’s reach.
- Pair them with: a medium-load armor set and enough stamina to block or roll once, then sprint away on Torrent.
- Watch for: attacking directly in front of Radahn during a long sword string. Even a safe thrust becomes risky if you commit to a full sequence.
Piercing arrows provide the same general damage logic from farther away. They are particularly useful if you want to remain mounted and punish after Radahn completes a volley or slam.
Fast bleed weapons: high pressure without long commitments
Bleed-oriented weapons are strong candidates because rapid, repeated hits can build status while you spend less time in front of Radahn. Bloodhound’s Fang is a practical named option from the guide’s recommendations: it gives a melee character strong reach and a fast enough attack pattern to take advantage of brief openings. Dual katanas are another supported route for players who can control their spacing and avoid being greedy.
Bleed is not a substitute for learning the arena. Your status buildup falls apart if you whiff, attack into armor, or remain in a gravity attack just to land another hit. Use one- or two-hit punish strings, then reset your position. If dual wielding pushes your equip load into heavy territory, remove weight before adding another damage-focused item; a slower roll is usually a larger loss than the extra weapon provides.
Frost weapons: burst potential for aggressive but disciplined players
Fast frost weapons fit the same opening-based plan as bleed weapons. They reward repeated contact, but the fight still demands that you leave before a completed combo. Choose a frost weapon you already have upgraded rather than switching to an uninvested option solely because it has a status effect. The upgrade level, your relevant attack stats, and your ability to connect hits matter more than the label on the weapon.
Bleed and frost are therefore build choices, not guarantees. Radahn’s specifically listed weaknesses are Pierce and Scarlet Rot; the guide supports bleed and frost as effective pressure options because they can be applied quickly, not because every status interaction is equally strong in every build.
Heavy swords and tank weapons
A heavy sword can work for a high-Vigor character who is comfortable absorbing or blocking a limited number of hits. The trade-off is execution risk: slow swings can be interrupted, and a full combo may overlap Radahn’s next gravity pull or sword chain. Use a heavy weapon for single, deliberate attacks after a completed animation rather than trying to stun-lock him.
Heavy equipment is viable only if the complete loadout remains at a normal or medium roll. A high-defense set that forces a heavy roll can make the opening arrows, meteor crash, and gravity explosion harder to avoid. If you cannot keep mobility, downgrade armor weight, replace a shield, or use an equip-load talisman.
Bows and ranged physical damage
Bows are a strong choice for players who would rather maintain distance than trade melee hits. The arena gives you room to circle, and Torrent lets you keep moving while firing. Piercing arrows are especially relevant because Pierce is listed as a weakness. Ranged attacks also make the NPC summons more valuable: while Radahn is focused on an ally, you can line up shots without standing in his sword range.
Do not remain stationary to fire through every opening. Radahn begins with gravity arrows and continues to use ranged and area attacks later, so shoot after a volley or completed combo, then ride laterally or behind him. Carry enough arrows for a prolonged attempt; repeatedly returning to a merchant or changing equipment between phases is more dangerous than planning your ammunition before entering.
Fast-casting magic
Quick spells are supported for the same reason as bows: they let you capitalize on a finished attack without committing to a slow animation. Use spells with short cast times and enough range to fire while circling on Torrent or while an NPC holds attention. Long casts are vulnerable to gravity pulls, the comet barrage, and the meteor sequence.
Magic does not remove the need for physical defense. Radahn’s gravity attacks can reach you while you are casting, and the opening arrow sequence can force an immediate dodge before you ever get a spell off. Keep a fast defensive option available and stop casting when he turns toward you.

How to choose between the weapon types

When two options look equal, select the one already upgraded and scaled to your attributes. A familiar +6-or-better weapon with reliable timing is generally more useful than an unupgraded weapon chosen for a theoretical status advantage.

Armor: survive without losing the roll
Armor should protect you from mistakes without turning every dodge into a slow, late recovery. Bandai Namco’s advanced-stats guidance states that, in general, you should stay at a medium roll or below. Medium load is 30%–69.9% of maximum equipment load; heavy load begins at 70% and extends through 99.9%. Check the percentage after equipping your weapon, shield, talismans, and arrows, not just the armor pieces.
Light armor for ranged and hit-and-run builds
Light gear is the simplest way to keep Torrent movement and on-foot dodges responsive. It is useful for bow and magic users who need to switch targets, turn away from a gravity attack, or sprint through an arrow volley. The defensive cost is real, so compensate with positioning rather than assuming distance makes you safe: Radahn’s gravity arrows, meteor crash, and comet barrage cover large areas.
Medium armor for most melee builds
A medium set is the practical default for spears, rapiers, katanas, and Bloodhound’s Fang. It gives you more physical and magical protection than a very light set while preserving the roll threshold. Mix pieces if necessary. The strongest individual helmet or chest piece is not automatically the best choice when it forces heavy load.

Tank armor makes sense with high Vigor, a shield, and a heavy sword, provided the total load stays at normal or medium. Prioritize physical and magic defenses because Radahn combines sword damage with gravity attacks. You still need Torrent: armor lets you survive a mistake, but it does not make standing in a long chain safe.
Vigor is a useful reality check when deciding whether more armor is worth its weight. Bandai Namco’s figures list 40 Vigor as 1,450 health and 60 Vigor as 1,900 health. Those values show why adding health can be more efficient than carrying an extremely heavy set that removes your medium roll. If you routinely die to one follow-up after surviving the first hit, add health or mitigation before chasing a small damage increase.
Talisman choices that solve specific problems
There is no single universally best Radahn talisman in the cited guidance. Choose the slot that addresses your attack pattern, load threshold, or most common cause of death.
Claw Talisman for jump-attack builds
Claw Talisman is the natural damage talisman for a jump-attack setup. Official patch 1.05 notes specifically fixed a bug in which its effect was not applied when jumping with the Starscourge Greatsword in both hands. That confirms the interaction for that two-handed jump pattern; it does not make Claw Talisman the best option for every weapon or every player.

Use it when your damage plan genuinely contains frequent, deliberate jump attacks. Do not equip it for occasional jumps if a defensive or equip-load talisman would prevent more deaths.
Equip-load talisman
An equip-load talisman is valuable when one additional armor piece, shield, or weapon would otherwise push you into heavy load. Its purpose is defensive even though it does not directly reduce damage: preserving the medium-roll threshold improves your ability to evade arrows, gravity pulls, sword sweeps, and the meteor landing. Recheck the load percentage after every equipment change.
Defensive talismans
Use physical or magic mitigation when your deaths have a clear damage source. Physical defense helps against sword sweeps and slams; magic or elemental protection is relevant when gravity blasts and other ranged attacks are the problem. The available guidance supports high physical and magic defense for tank setups but does not rank one defensive talisman as best-in-slot. Match the talisman to the attack you fail to survive, rather than choosing a generic defensive effect without reviewing the combat log or your death sequence.
Damage talismans for charged or repeated hits
A damage talisman should match what you actually do. A jump-focused effect fits a jump build; a charged-attack effect fits a player who reliably lands charged heavies after Radahn’s recovery; a repeated-hit effect fits fast weapons that can connect several times without getting greedy. If your usual attempt ends while avoiding attacks rather than dealing them, a defensive slot can produce more real damage by keeping you alive for another opening.

Recommended level
Plarium’s encounter guide places the recommended range at level 60–70. Treat that as a practical starting point, not a requirement that overrides your build. A well-upgraded weapon and disciplined movement can make the fight manageable near the lower end, while a character at a higher level can still struggle if health is low or the weapon is underdeveloped.

Vigor and survivability
Raise Vigor when a single arrow, gravity blast, or sword follow-up routinely leaves you unable to heal. The cited health points—1,450 at 40 Vigor and 1,900 at 60—illustrate the benefit of a larger health buffer. More health also gives you time to reach Torrent or a safe distance after a mistake.
Weapon upgrades
The guide says upgraded weapons, usually +6 or higher, perform better when fighting solo. The exact reinforcement path depends on the weapon type, so use the highest upgrade your current materials and build support. Do not enter with an unupgraded backup simply because it has Pierce, bleed, or frost; the damage lost per opening can outweigh the theoretical matchup.

Phase one: survive the approach
Radahn opens with gravity arrows and arrow volleys while you cross the arena. Mount Torrent immediately and use lateral movement, terrain, and timing rather than riding in a straight line toward him. A light or medium load gives you a better recovery if you need to dismount and roll. Ranged characters can fire only after avoiding the volley; melee characters should close distance when the attack ends, not during the arrow release.
Phase one also includes sweeps, slams, a gravity pull, and a charged slash. Your weapon determines the safe punish: a spear thrust, one Bloodhound’s Fang hit, a short katana sequence, a piercing arrow, or a quick spell. Attack after a completed animation, then move away before the next chain starts. Standing directly in front of Radahn for an extra hit is the most common way to turn a successful opening into a trade.
Phase two: respect the meteor and gravity attacks
At the transition, Radahn adds the meteor crash, gravity explosion, comet barrage, longer sword strings, and additional gravity pulls. Keep Torrent available and avoid committing to a slow cast or heavy combo while he is out of sight. If you lose visual contact, prioritize movement and camera control over damage.
The arena’s NPC signs can reappear after allies fall. Ride to each available sign and resummon them during phase two. Treat the summons as attention control: they create windows for a thrust, status hit, arrow, or quick spell, but they are not a reason to stand in front of Radahn while he is chaining attacks.
When to heal or recover
Heal while moving toward a safe angle or after Radahn completes a long attack, not when he is turning toward you. A medium-load roll and Torrent’s speed make it easier to create that distance. If your armor is light, use the extra mobility; if your armor is heavy but still medium-load, use the larger health buffer without assuming you can absorb every hit.

Balanced melee
- Bloodhound’s Fang or a fast katana setup.
- Medium armor with total load below 70%.
- Claw Talisman only if jump attacks are a major part of the plan; otherwise use defensive or equip-load support.
- High enough Vigor that one arrow or gravity hit does not force an immediate panic heal.
- Torrent for every approach and disengagement.
This setup wins through short bleed-oriented punish strings, not by standing in front of Radahn and trading.
Pierce-and-spacing setup
- Spear or rapier, optionally with piercing arrows as a backup.
- Medium armor and a shield only if the shield does not create heavy load.
- A defensive talisman selected for the attack that kills you most often.
- Repeated single thrusts after sweeps, slams, or gravity pulls finish.
This is the clearest way to use the listed Pierce weakness while retaining a controlled escape route.
Mounted ranged setup
- Bow with piercing arrows or a fast-casting spell.
- Light or medium armor for quick target switches and arrow-volleys movement.
- Equip-load support if ammunition, a shield, or a backup weapon crosses the heavy threshold.
- A defensive talisman if gravity attacks still one-shot or nearly one-shot you.
Circle on Torrent, fire after completed attacks, and stop shooting whenever Radahn turns toward you.
Tank setup
- Heavy sword and shield with high Vigor.
- The strongest physical and magic defenses that still leave a normal or medium roll.
- An equip-load talisman if one is needed to remain below 70%.
- A damage talisman only when your attack pattern can land its condition consistently.
Block or absorb selectively, then punish once. A tank build is about surviving a mistake, not ignoring Radahn’s mechanics.

Common preparation mistakes and fixes
- Heavy load after equipping everything: remove weight or use an equip-load talisman until the status screen shows medium or normal load.
- Unupgraded status weapon: return to the weapon you have developed to roughly +6 or higher rather than chasing an uninvested bleed or frost option.
- Long, greedy combos: limit yourself to a short punish after Radahn’s animation and disengage on Torrent.
- Ignoring NPC signs: summon every available ally at the festival and revisit signs when they return in phase two.
- Standing still at range: fire one shot or cast, then continue moving; Radahn’s arrows and gravity attacks punish stationary ranged play.
- Using Claw Talisman without jump attacks: replace it with defense, equip-load support, or a damage effect that matches your real attack pattern.
- Entering underleveled with low health: move toward the 60–70 recommendation and increase Vigor if a single mistake ends the attempt.
Rewards and why the fight is worth preparing for
Starscourge Radahn is an optional Caelid boss encountered at the Radahn Festival. Plarium’s guide lists 70,000 runes, the Remembrance of the Starscourge, and Radahn’s Great Rune as rewards. Because the encounter is optional, you can leave and improve your weapon, Vigor, armor load, or ammunition before returning; there is no advantage to forcing a low-damage setup through repeated attempts.
