The most reliable setup uses three separate data layers: NSE IX or a broker page for GIFT Nifty, official exchange/index pages or a licensed multi-exchange feed for Asian benchmarks, and a benchmark-specific commodity feed for WTI or Brent. Before treating any quote as “live,” verify its timestamp, time zone, instrument (cash index, future or ETF), contract month and exchange entitlement.
GIFT Nifty is a Nifty 50 derivative traded on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX), not the same instrument as the NSE cash Nifty 50. Its extended session can provide an overnight indication of how India-linked risk is being priced, while Asian indices and crude prices add regional and macro context.
What each market measure actually represents
GIFT Nifty is a derivative, not the cash Nifty 50
GIFT Nifty contracts are derivatives based on the Nifty 50 and trade on NSE IX. A quote therefore reflects the price of a futures contract, with its own expiry, liquidity and basis relative to the spot index. It is useful as an overnight reference for India, but it is not a promise that the NSE cash index will open at exactly the same level.

The contract month matters. A front-month quote can roll, trade at a premium or discount to spot, and react to global events while India’s cash market is closed. Record the expiry or contract month whenever you save a reading.

Asian “markets” are a collection of benchmarks
There is no single Asian-market price. Common reference points include Japan’s Nikkei, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, China’s Shanghai Composite, South Korea’s KOSPI and Australia’s ASX 200. Each has a local exchange, local trading calendar, currency and publication convention. Some services show cash indices; others show futures, contracts for difference or exchange-traded funds that only approximate the index.
Compare like with like. A cash index that has stopped updating should not be interpreted as a live futures quote, and an ETF proxy can continue trading after the underlying index closes.
WTI and Brent are different crude benchmarks
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent are separate benchmarks with different delivery locations, contract specifications and market participants. Select the benchmark that matches the question you are answering, then note the contract month and quote currency. “Oil is up” is incomplete without those details.

When GIFT Nifty is open
NSE IX documentation lists GIFT Nifty trading from 06:30 to 02:45 the next day, India Standard Time (IST), with a 06:15 IST pre-open. The National Stock Exchange of India has described the contracts as available for trading for “almost 21 hours,” overlapping Asian, European and US trading hours.
For comparison, regular NSE equities trade from 09:15 to 15:30 IST after the pre-open process. That difference explains why GIFT Nifty can move during the evening, overnight and early morning when the Indian cash market is shut.

Daylight-saving changes in Europe, North America and Australia can shift the amount of overlap shown on a dashboard. India does not observe daylight saving, so any seasonal change comes from the other market’s clock.
Where to see GIFT Nifty
Use an NSE IX source for the primary reference
An NSE IX page is the closest source to the venue where the contract trades. Check whether the page identifies the exact contract, last-traded time, percentage change, volume and open interest. A page that only displays a large number without a timestamp is not sufficient for an audit trail.

Broker information pages can be easier to read and may add charts or alerts. Zerodha’s GIFT Nifty information page, for example, describes the product as a derivative contract based on Nifty 50. Treat any broker display as a data presentation layer: confirm whether its quote is real-time, delayed or indicative, and verify the contract month against NSE IX.
What to record before India opens
- Open the NSE IX or broker page before the 09:15 IST NSE cash open.
- Write down the contract month, last price, percentage move, timestamp and time zone.
- Check whether the displayed change is measured from the previous settlement, previous close or another reference.
- Note volume and open interest when supplied; a large percentage move on thin activity deserves more caution.
- Compare the overnight move with major Asian, European and US developments rather than treating it as a guaranteed opening forecast.
How to track Asian indices without mixing instruments
Start with official exchange or index pages
For each benchmark, identify the exchange that publishes the index and use its official page when possible. Official pages make the index methodology, market status, publication time and holiday interruptions clearer than an unlabeled aggregator.
Build a coverage checklist
- Japan: confirm whether the service carries the Nikkei cash index, a futures contract or an ETF proxy.
- Hong Kong: distinguish the Hang Seng cash index from futures and from mainland-China proxies.
- China: check whether “Shanghai” means the Shanghai Composite or another Shanghai Stock Exchange index.
- South Korea: verify that KOSPI is the selected benchmark, not a sector or small-cap index.
- Australia: confirm that ASX 200 is available and whether the displayed value is cash or futures.
Ask the provider for the symbol definition if the label is abbreviated. Similar names can refer to different currencies, venues or contract multipliers.

Check local hours and market status
Convert each exchange’s local hours to IST or your own time zone, but retain the original local time in your notes. A lunch break, public holiday, auction phase or exchange halt can make an unchanged value look like a live market. The provider should show a “closed,” “halted” or “delayed” status instead of leaving users to guess.
Cash, futures and ETF proxies: a practical distinction

Tracking WTI and Brent crude prices
Choose the benchmark and expiry first
For WTI, identify the contract month and whether the quote is for a futures contract, a spot-style reference or a cash-settled derivative. Do the same for Brent. Nearby contracts can trade at different prices when the futures curve is in contango or backwardation, so a generic “oil price” number can change simply because a service rolls to another month.
NSE WTI contract details
NSE’s WTI Crude Oil specifications list a 100-barrel lot, monthly contracts and trading that continues until 23:30 or 23:55, depending on US daylight-saving timing. The final settlement references the NYMEX front-month CL contract and uses the Reserve Bank of India’s USDINR reference rate for conversion. These details matter if you are reconciling an NSE quote with a US-dollar WTI screen.
A repeatable oil-monitoring procedure
- Select WTI or Brent based on the benchmark required by your analysis.
- Select the contract month and write it beside the quote.
- Check the quote currency, unit (normally dollars per barrel for international benchmarks) and whether the number is real-time or delayed.
- Compare the last-traded time with the benchmark’s trading session; a stale value is not necessarily a falling or rising market.
- For an NSE WTI contract, account for the 100-barrel lot, the specified settlement reference and the USDINR conversion when comparing values across venues.
How to compare tracking services
Do not rank platforms by a single “best” label. Score each one against the way you intend to use the data.

How much market depth do you need?
For a personal dashboard, last price, net change, percentage change, chart and timestamp are usually enough. An active trader may need bid and ask prices, sizes, trades and depth. NSE Data & Analytics describes three paid real-time feed levels: Level 1, Level 2 with up to five bid/ask levels, and Level 3 with up to 20 bid/ask levels.

Depth is not the same as accuracy. A Level 3 book can still be delayed or subject to entitlement restrictions, and a shallow book can be normal outside the most liquid hours. Match the feed tier to the decisions you make rather than paying for unused fields.
A practical three-screen workflow
Screen 1: India overnight signal
- Open the NSE IX or broker GIFT Nifty quote.
- Confirm the 06:15 pre-open or 06:30 start has passed, depending on the phase you are viewing.
- Record contract month, price, percentage change, timestamp and data status.
- At the end of the overnight session, save the final timestamp rather than copying a number later from memory.
Screen 2: Asian benchmarks
- Open official index pages or a licensed multi-exchange feed.
- For every benchmark, record venue, local market status, cash/futures/ETF type and timestamp.
- Convert times to IST only after retaining the source time zone.
- Flag closed, halted and delayed values so they are not compared with live markets.
Screen 3: crude
- Open the selected WTI or Brent benchmark.
- Record contract month, quote currency, unit, last price, change and timestamp.
- If using the NSE WTI contract, note the 100-barrel lot and the settlement-reference rules.
- Keep WTI and Brent in separate columns; do not average them into one “oil” figure.
Use a compact audit log
A spreadsheet or note can use these columns: date, source, venue, symbol, instrument_type, contract_month, price, currency, timestamp, timezone, status, delay and notes. This prevents a delayed cash index from being mixed with a live future days later.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling every visible number “live”
Symptom: A dashboard shows a moving-looking chart but no entitlement or delay label. Fix: Read the provider’s market-data terms and look for a timestamp that changes during the session. If the status is unclear, label the value delayed or indicative in your own notes.
Comparing GIFT Nifty directly with the NSE cash close
Symptom: The overnight percentage is treated as an exact prediction of the next cash opening level. Fix: Compare the same reference basis, record the futures contract month and allow for basis, overnight news and a different trading session.
Mixing Asian cash indices and futures
Symptom: One country appears to be moving while its cash market is closed. Fix: Inspect the instrument label and exchange. Mark futures and ETF proxies separately from cash indices.

Ignoring time-zone and daylight-saving changes
Symptom: A US or European overlap appears one hour earlier or later than expected. Fix: Store the source time zone, convert with a current time-zone rule and recheck schedules when daylight-saving status changes.
Using a generic oil quote
Symptom: A price differs between two screens and neither appears wrong. Fix: Compare benchmark, contract month, currency, unit, venue and settlement convention before comparing the numerical value.
Assuming display rights include redistribution
Symptom: A website republishes a feed without confirming permission. Fix: Read exchange and vendor entitlement terms; viewing access, commercial publication and automated redistribution can be separate rights.

What “before India opens” can and cannot tell you
GIFT Nifty’s long session is valuable because it overlaps major global sessions. A substantial overnight move can identify a risk event, currency shock or change in global sentiment before 09:15 IST. It cannot account for every opening-auction effect, constituent-specific news, local liquidity condition or basis difference. Use it as one input alongside Asian cash performance, relevant futures, currency and crude benchmarks.
The same discipline applies to Asian markets. A simultaneous percentage comparison is meaningful only when each value has a comparable timestamp and instrument type. If Tokyo cash is closed while a US-listed ETF is trading, the two numbers describe different moments.
Quick daily checklist
- Confirm the source and whether the quote is real-time, delayed or indicative.
- Write the venue, exact symbol and instrument type.
- Record contract month for GIFT Nifty, WTI and Brent futures.
- Keep local time, converted time and time zone together.
- Check exchange status, holidays, pre-open and daylight-saving effects.
- Separate cash indices, futures and ETF proxies in tables and charts.
- For NSE WTI, remember the 100-barrel lot and the specified settlement references.
- Check data licensing before publishing, redistributing or feeding quotes into another service.
Bottom line
Use NSE IX or a clearly entitled broker page for GIFT Nifty, official exchange pages or a licensed feed for each Asian benchmark, and a contract-specific WTI or Brent source for crude. The quality of the workflow depends less on finding one universal app than on identifying the exact instrument, timestamp, session and data rights behind every number.
