Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can take useful screen breaks with an ordinary clock, an existing calendar or timer, or a recurring work habit—no new app required. Try a 20-second look into the distance every 20 minutes, then step away from computer tasks for about five minutes each hour.
Use two kinds of breaks for two different needs
A quick eye rest and a longer movement break are not interchangeable. The first interrupts near focusing; the second gives you time away from computer tasks to change posture or move.
| Break | What to do | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Eye-focusing rest | Look at a distant object instead of the screen. | About 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, as recommended by the CDC and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). |
| Movement and posture break | Stop computer tasks; stand, stretch, walk, or get water. | OSHA suggests a five-minute break from computer tasks every hour: OSHA work-practices guidance. |
| Longer screen pause | Take a screen-free break at lunch or another natural stopping point when practical. | CDC/NIOSH recommends at least one prolonged break, such as lunchtime: CDC/NIOSH guidance. |
How to build a simple break routine
Every 20 minutes: look away
Shift your focus from the near screen to an object about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. A view out a window or across a room can work if it is far enough away. People concentrating on one thing may blink less, which can contribute to strain or fatigue, according to CDC vision guidance; the AAO also recommends the 20/20/20 rule.
Every hour: leave computer tasks for five minutes
Use the time to stand, stretch, walk, get water, or do a brief non-screen task. OSHA’s recommendation is a five-minute break from computer tasks each hour. NIOSH also reports that overall musculoskeletal discomfort and eyestrain were significantly reduced when hourly five-minute breaks supplemented conventional twice-daily rest breaks; the surfaced NIOSH page does not specify the underlying study’s sample size or year, so this should not be read as a guaranteed result for every person.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
At lunch: take a longer pause when practical
Use lunch or another natural stopping point for a more extended break from screens. CDC/NIOSH recommends at least one prolonged break, such as lunchtime. Treat these intervals as practical guidance, not a schedule proven to prevent symptoms for everyone.

- Use a clock or watch: Check it at the start of work and pause when the 20-minute mark arrives.
- Use an existing calendar or device timer: Set a repeating prompt if you already use those tools. A timer is especially straightforward for the hourly break; CDC/NIOSH specifically suggests setting one.
- Attach the pause to a routine transition: For example, look away after finishing a short task, and take the longer break at a predictable point in the hour.
- Keep a written cue nearby: A small note by the monitor can remind you to look away without adding software.
- Use a simple physical timer if helpful: It is optional; a clock, habit, or existing device can do the job too.
Reduce other sources of visual discomfort
Breaks are only one part of a comfortable workstation. CDC/NIOSH notes that eye strain can also be related to prolonged screen use, excessive brightness, font size, and other factors. Try reducing glare, adjusting brightness or contrast, or enlarging text when needed. OSHA advises arranging the workspace to minimize glare from lights and windows, since glare and poorly arranged lighting can contribute to eye fatigue and headaches.
The AAO says digital-device blue light has not been shown to damage the eye and does not recommend special blue-light-blocking eyewear for computer use. If eye symptoms continue, contact an ophthalmologist, as the AAO advises. A break routine is not a diagnosis or treatment for an eye condition.
