You can run some Windows games on a Mac by streaming them from a cloud service, using CrossOver to run compatible titles locally, or installing Arm Windows in a virtual machine on supported Apple silicon Macs. None works with every game. Check the exact title’s cloud availability, CrossOver compatibility report, or Windows-on-Arm requirements before spending money. If the game has a Mac version, that may be the simplest option.
Choose a method by checking the game first
“Windows games on Mac” is not a single compatibility category. Cloud services offer selected catalogues; CrossOver reports vary by title; and a Windows virtual machine still has graphics and anti-cheat limitations. Use this guide to narrow the route, then confirm the current status of the specific game.
| What matters most | Route to check first | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal installation and a supported game library | GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming | Exact game, region, account or plan and purchase eligibility, compatible Mac or browser, and connection quality |
| Run a particular game locally without a full Windows desktop | CrossOver | Current title report, launcher, graphics backend, multiplayer and anti-cheat status |
| Need Windows for other software as well as a game | Parallels with Arm Windows on supported Apple silicon | Windows version and license, graphics API requirements, anti-cheat, game compatibility, and Mac hardware |
| A Mac-native edition exists | Native Mac version | Publisher’s current macOS requirements and the edition available in your store |
Cloud gaming: play a supported title without installing Windows
Cloud gaming runs the game on a service’s hardware and streams the result to your Mac. It avoids setting up local Windows and rendering the game on the Mac, but only works when the service offers that game and your account meets its access conditions.
GeForce NOW
NVIDIA advertises more than 4,000 games in its GeForce NOW catalogue. That is the provider’s overall catalogue claim, not a promise that a particular PC game is supported. Search the current GeForce NOW games list, and check the system requirements for your device and region. A supported game may also require access to the relevant compatible game-store account or entitlement.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming supports compatible Apple devices and browsers, but game availability and access conditions vary by title and region. Its current page describes select free-to-play games that can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions, as well as streaming select games users own or buy. Do not assume that any Windows game you own—or the full PC Game Pass catalogue—is available to stream. Check the Xbox Cloud Gaming page and the service’s current eligibility details for the specific game. Xbox’s setup guide lists Xbox and verified third-party controllers; use a controller only if your game and device support it.
What cloud play depends on
You need an adequate internet connection and a service catalogue that includes the game. Provider documentation does not establish one latency threshold that guarantees a good experience for every household or genre, so a streamed game may not suit every connection or latency-sensitive player.

CrossOver: run some Windows games locally without a full Windows desktop
CrossOver is a macOS compatibility product, not a complete Windows installation. Its guide describes graphics options including D3DMetal, which translates DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 for macOS. That translation can make some games worth trying, but it does not guarantee that a title will work: launchers, updates, online modes, anti-cheat, and game-specific changes can affect the result.
Before purchasing CrossOver or a game for this purpose, search the CrossOver Compatibility Center for the exact title. Read the report’s date and rating, and check any notes about the launcher, multiplayer, or graphics support. The CrossOver Mac User Guide explains its graphics options.

Parallels and Arm Windows: useful when you need a Windows environment
On Apple silicon, Parallels Desktop can run an Arm version of Windows 11. Microsoft identifies Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19, and 20 as authorized for Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise on M1, M2, and M3 Macs. Authorization to run Windows is not a guarantee that a game will work: Microsoft warns that Windows on Arm has app and game limitations, including for software that relies on DirectX 12. Parallels also identifies graphics requirements, Windows-on-Arm support, and anti-cheat technology as compatibility factors.
Check the game against current Parallels game-compatibility information and the relevant Microsoft guidance for Windows 11 on Mac before relying on a VM. Microsoft says each Windows 11 Pro instance needs its own license.

Do not apply Apple silicon guidance to every Mac
Mac processor generation, memory configuration, macOS release, Windows edition, virtual-machine software version, and game requirements all affect the setup. Boot Camp is relevant only to older Intel Mac contexts; it is not an Apple silicon solution. The Microsoft guidance cited above covers M1, M2, and M3 Macs, not every Mac configuration.

Apple presents the Game Porting Toolkit as a resource for developers to evaluate Windows executables on Apple silicon and work toward Apple-platform ports. It is not best treated as a simple, supported consumer gaming app. For a more accessible compatibility-product workflow, investigate CrossOver and its title-specific reports instead. See Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit information and the CrossOver guide.

Check compatibility before you commit
- Look for a Mac-native release. Check the publisher or store listing for the current macOS requirements; a native edition avoids the Windows compatibility routes described here.
- Search cloud catalogues. Check the exact game, region, account or purchase eligibility, compatible browser or device, and service requirements on GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Check CrossOver’s current report. Find the exact game in the Compatibility Center; consider the report date, rating, launcher, updates, graphics, and online-play notes.
- Check VM-specific limits. If you need Windows for more than gaming, verify the Mac model, Windows-on-Arm and DirectX needs, anti-cheat, Parallels version, and Windows license requirements.
- Choose based on the trade-off. Cloud play avoids local Windows setup but depends on the catalogue and connection; CrossOver avoids a full Windows desktop but is title-dependent; a VM supplies a Windows environment but does not remove Windows-on-Arm game limitations.
Provider catalogues, compatibility reports, and software support can change. Recheck them for your game, region, Mac, and software versions before paying. Advertised frame rates are not useful for comparing these routes unless the game, Mac configuration, settings, software versions, and test method are the same; no performance or latency measurements are established here.
