For most DOS games and ordinary DOS applications, start with DOSBox Staging. It includes its own MS-DOS environment, so you do not install DOS separately, and its documented builds support 64-bit Windows 8, 10 and 11, macOS 12 or later on Intel and Apple silicon, and modern x86_64 Linux. Use 86Box when a program depends on a particular period PC, BIOS, video card, sound card, CPU timing or older Windows installation. That choice gives you more authentic hardware control but requires considerably more setup.

There is no authoritative percentage showing how many DOS programs work on modern computers. Compatibility depends on the program’s assumptions, its installer and copy-protection method, timing sensitivity, peripherals and the operating environment it expects.
What DOSBox Staging provides
DOSBox Staging is designed primarily for PC booter, MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 games released during the 1981–2000 period. Applications and demoscene software are secondary objectives, but ordinary DOS programs often work well because they use the same conventional PC interfaces as games.

The emulator supplies the DOS layer internally. A fresh installation therefore gives you a DOS prompt without locating and installing a separate DOS operating-system copy. You provide the program files, mount their containing directory, and launch the executable from the emulated prompt.

Supported host computers
The current installation documentation lists 64-bit Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11, macOS 12 (Monterey) or later on both Intel and Apple-silicon Macs, and modern x86_64 Linux distributions. Use the project’s official download packages rather than unsupported third-party repackagings so that the executable, configuration defaults and update path match the documentation.
What it emulates well
DOSBox Staging emulates the common DOS-era CPU, memory, graphics, storage, keyboard, joystick and sound interfaces that most software expects. It also provides modern display controls, including aspect-ratio correction, shaders, CRT-style effects, dedithering, deinterlacing, image adjustments and synchronization options. These controls affect how the output is presented; they do not turn the emulator into a cycle-accurate replica of one specific vintage computer.
Set up a DOS program in DOSBox Staging
Keep the original program files intact and mount only the directory that contains the software. A separate folder makes it easier to back up, remove or replace a program without exposing your whole home directory to the emulated DOS environment.
- Install the official package for your host. Choose the 64-bit Windows package, the macOS 12-or-newer package for Intel or Apple silicon, or the package for your modern x86_64 Linux distribution.
- Create a dedicated program folder. For example, place one game or application in a folder such as
DOSAPPon Windows or~/DOS/APPon macOS or Linux. Keep each title in its own folder when possible. - Start DOSBox Staging. It opens at an emulated DOS prompt. Your host files are not visible until you explicitly mount a directory.
- Mount the program directory. At the prompt, use a command in this form:
mount c C:DOSAPP
c:On macOS or Linux, use the path to your folder, for example:
mount c ~/DOS/APP
c:The exact host path varies by operating system. The emulated drive letter C: is simply the name DOSBox Staging presents to the program.

- List the files and identify the launcher. Run
dirto see the directory. Look for the vendor’s documented start file, commonly an.EXE,.COMor.BATfile. Start it by typing its name, such asGAMEorSTART, without the extension if DOS can resolve it. - Begin with defaults. Test the program before changing CPU, memory, graphics or sound settings. Defaults avoid introducing a new incompatibility while you are still determining whether the original files are complete.
- Change one setting at a time. If the program is too fast, too slow, silent, distorted or visually incorrect, adjust the relevant setting, restart the program and record what changed. Reversing one change is easier than diagnosing several simultaneous changes.
Make mounting convenient
If you launch the same title regularly, place the mount and start commands in DOSBox Staging’s configuration so the program opens ready to use. Keep the automatic mount limited to that title’s directory. Mounting an entire disk or your personal home directory is unnecessary and gives legacy software access to files it does not need.
Preserve the original directory structure
Many installers and batch files assume a particular directory name, drive letter or relative path. Copy the complete program directory, including subdirectories and configuration files, instead of extracting only the main executable. If an installer originally created a directory tree, reproduce that tree inside the mounted folder.

CPU speed and timing
Most software should be tested at the default emulated CPU speed. A title that runs too quickly may need fewer emulated cycles; a title that performs poorly may need more. Timing-sensitive software can react badly to extreme settings, so use the smallest adjustment that fixes the symptom and test menus, gameplay or calculations separately.
Graphics modes
Use aspect-ratio correction when a program was designed for a non-square-pixel display and looks unnaturally wide on a modern monitor. Shaders and CRT effects are optional presentation choices. Disable them when you are troubleshooting a rendering problem so that you can distinguish an emulation issue from an effect or scaling artifact. Dedithering and deinterlacing can change how old 256-color graphics and interlaced output appear; choose the result that preserves the information you need rather than assuming a modern flat image is always more accurate.
Sound and input
Start with the program’s expected conventional sound and MIDI settings. If audio is missing, check the title’s own setup utility as well as DOSBox Staging’s emulated sound configuration. For keyboard-driven software, confirm that the host keyboard layout sends the keys the program expects. Joystick-oriented games can use a USB gamepad, but controller behavior is game-dependent; treat a gamepad as an optional accessory rather than a universal requirement.

Synchronization and display latency
DOSBox Staging includes synchronization controls intended to make scrolling and animation look stable on modern displays. If motion tears, stutters or feels delayed, test synchronization options one at a time and compare windowed and full-screen modes. Record a working configuration for each title because a setting that helps a scrolling game may add unnecessary latency to an application.

DOSBox Staging is not limited to games. Database tools, word processors, accounting packages, educational programs and utilities can run when they depend on standard DOS behavior and emulated hardware. Applications may expose issues that games do not, such as printer access, serial devices, file-locking behavior, copy-protection keys, unusual memory managers or floating-point calculations.
Printers, serial devices and other hardware
Decide whether the application needs to print, communicate over a serial port or access a specialized device before choosing an emulator. A program that only opens and saves files is a straightforward DOSBox Staging candidate. A program that expects a particular physical interface may require additional host integration or a complete-system emulator, and the exact device behavior must be validated with the application itself.
The 80-bit x87 floating-point caveat
DOSBox Staging notes that decades of Intel x86 software generally continue to work on newer processors, but some engineering software depends on accurate 80-bit extended-precision x87 floating-point behavior. If a calculation-heavy application produces different results, refuses to start its numerical module or fails a built-in test, do not assume that increasing CPU cycles will solve it. Compare results with known reference data and test the exact program in an emulator that provides the floating-point behavior it requires.
When 86Box is the better choice
86Box is a low-level x86 emulator for older IBM PC-compatible systems, from 1981-era machines through relatively recent PCI-based designs. Instead of presenting a mostly standardized DOS environment, it lets you assemble a virtual machine from period components: CPU, motherboard, BIOS, video adapter, sound card and storage controller. That control is useful when software reacts to a particular chipset, BIOS quirk, bus speed, memory layout or peripheral.

Signals that you need full-system emulation
- The program documents a required CPU generation, BIOS revision or expansion card.
- It uses timing or hardware behavior that changes when the emulated CPU speed is adjusted in a simpler DOS environment.
- It is an older Windows installation whose drivers expect a specific video, sound or storage device.
- You are reproducing an 8088, 8086 or 486-era machine for compatibility testing, preservation or debugging.
- A DOSBox Staging configuration works for the executable but fails during installation, hardware detection or a protected-mode transition.
How to build an 86Box machine
- Define the target computer. Write down the CPU class, approximate memory, graphics mode, sound hardware, storage type and operating system that the software expects. Do not choose components only because they are newer or faster.
- Select a matching motherboard and BIOS. The BIOS is part of the compatibility target; changing it can alter drive detection, memory reporting and initialization behavior.
- Choose period-appropriate video and audio devices. Match the adapter named by the software or by the system configuration you are reproducing.
- Create virtual storage. Install the operating system and applications into the emulator’s virtual disk or disk-image files. Keep those images backed up before experimenting with drivers or configuration.
- Install the guest operating system. Use installation media and software for which you have rights. Complete the guest’s hardware drivers and reboot as the original machine would.
- Install and test the target program. Change one virtual component at a time if detection fails. A complete-system emulator offers more possibilities, but each additional variable increases troubleshooting work.
86Box is therefore a precision tool, not automatically a better first choice. If your application behaves normally in DOSBox Staging, the extra BIOS, card and disk-image work usually provides no practical benefit.
Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and later-era software
Windows 3.1
DOSBox Staging explicitly supports the Windows 3.1 operating environment. Install Windows 3.1 and its applications inside the DOSBox Staging environment when the program’s requirements are conventional and you want a relatively simple setup. Use the same disciplined approach as with DOS software: preserve the installation media and configuration files, mount only the directory or disk image needed, and change one hardware setting at a time.
Windows 9x
Windows 95 and related Windows 9x software generally needs a fuller virtual PC than DOSBox Staging is intended to provide. DOSBox Staging’s own project information points readers toward DOSBox-X, QEMU, VirtualBox, 86Box and PCem for broader system emulation. Choose among those according to the hardware, driver and operating-system behavior your software requires rather than assuming that a DOS-compatible executable will behave like a DOS application.

Common problems and targeted fixes

Software rights and safe handling
An emulator does not grant permission to copy or distribute copyrighted games, applications, operating systems, ROMs or disk images. Obtain DOS programs, Windows installation media and any BIOS or ROM files from legitimate sources. Keep your original media or legally created images backed up, and avoid downloading an unknown repackaged emulator that may bundle altered software.

Mounting a narrowly scoped directory also reduces risk. Legacy programs can overwrite files, use short DOS filenames or create configuration files with unexpected names. A dedicated folder and a backup copy let you experiment without endangering current documents.

Practical choices for common situations
“I want to play one 1990s DOS game on Windows 11.”
Install the 64-bit Windows build of DOSBox Staging, mount the game’s directory, run its setup utility if it has one, and launch the documented executable. Leave the defaults in place until you have a specific speed, sound, input or display problem.
“I need to use an old DOS accounting or database program.”
Start with DOSBox Staging and test opening, saving, printing and any file-exchange workflow you actually need. Keep the application’s directory separate from personal files. If it depends on a printer, serial device, copy-protection key or specialized numeric behavior, validate that function explicitly rather than assuming that successful startup proves compatibility.
“I am reproducing an 8086 or 486 test machine.”
Use 86Box. Define the target CPU, motherboard, BIOS, video, sound and storage before installing the guest operating system. This approach takes longer, but it gives you the period-hardware controls that a convenience-focused DOS environment intentionally abstracts away.

DOSBox Staging is a suitable first attempt because Windows 3.1 is within its stated scope. If the software instead requires Windows 95-era drivers or hardware, use a broader complete-system option such as 86Box, DOSBox-X, QEMU, VirtualBox or PCem.
Bottom line
Choose DOSBox Staging for the shortest path from modern Windows, macOS or Linux to a DOS game, utility or Windows 3.1 application. Mount only the program folder, start with defaults and tune one behavior at a time. Choose 86Box when compatibility depends on recreating a particular vintage PC rather than merely providing a DOS prompt. For Windows 9x and other full-system cases, move to a broader emulator and plan for guest operating-system, driver and hardware configuration.
