The best GPU rental depends on how predictable your workload is. Use on-demand GPU virtual machines for experiments and bursty inference; reserve colocated capacity such as AWS EC2 Capacity Blocks when a distributed training run has a fixed deadline; choose NVIDIA DGX Cloud when managed software and expert support matter more than operating the cluster yourself; and consider a private cluster only when security, residency, utilization and sustained scale justify a multiyear commitment.

Choose the rental model before choosing a provider

GPU capacity is sold in several operating models. The right choice is determined less by a headline hourly rate than by whether your workload can tolerate interruption, how many GPUs must communicate during each step, and how long you can keep the machines busy.

On-demand GPU virtual machines

On-demand instances are the default for prototyping, fine-tuning, short experiments and inference whose traffic is difficult to forecast. You start and stop a VM when needed and avoid a long reservation. The trade-off is that capacity, quota and price can change by region and machine type. CoreWeave explicitly positions its on-demand instances for workloads without long-term commitments, while Lambda On-Demand Cloud offers Linux GPU-backed VMs including H100, GH200 and B200 systems.

  • Best fit: exploratory training, irregular batch jobs, development environments and variable inference.
  • Check before launching: GPU availability, regional quota, boot image, driver and CUDA compatibility, attached storage limits and egress pricing.
  • Main risk: a job may wait for capacity or be interrupted by your own budget controls if you have not set spending limits.

Scheduled reservations for a defined training window

A reservation is appropriate when a distributed run has a start date and must keep a large group of GPUs together. AWS EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML support P6e-GB200, P6-B300, P6-B200, P5en, P5e, P5 and P4d instances, as well as Trainium. AWS states that Capacity Blocks can be booked up to eight weeks ahead and run for as long as six months. The service supports reservations of up to 64 instances—up to 512 GPUs or 1,024 Trainium chips—subject to the quoted configuration and availability.

This model reduces the risk of assembling a cluster piecemeal at the last minute, but the reservation is a commitment: unused hours are still an economic loss. Verify the exact start time, instance count, placement, cancellation terms and quoted rate before paying.

Managed training platforms

A managed service is useful when the team wants a validated software stack, monitoring and vendor assistance instead of maintaining drivers, schedulers and distributed-training libraries. NVIDIA describes DGX Cloud as a “high-performance, fully managed AI training platform” available through the AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud marketplaces. NVIDIA also says the service includes flexible term lengths and access to NVIDIA experts.

Managed platforms generally trade some low-level control for faster onboarding and a clearer support path. Request the complete price for compute, storage, networking, support and marketplace fees; a marketplace listing alone is not an apples-to-apples GPU quote.

Dedicated private clusters

A private cluster is justified only when utilization is high and predictable or when security and data-residency requirements rule out ordinary shared infrastructure. Lambda Private Cloud describes custom clusters of 2,000 to 64,000 NVIDIA GPUs with reservations lasting three to ten years. That scale is fundamentally different from renting a few VMs: you must budget for capacity planning, networking, storage, operations, staffing and a long commitment.

  • Use it for: sustained large-scale training, strict isolation, regulated data residency or a known multi-year demand curve.
  • Avoid it for: uncertain research roadmaps, occasional inference or workloads that can move between regions and providers.

GPU and machine families you can rent

Memory capacity determines whether a model and its working state fit on one GPU or must be sharded. The following configurations are stated by the providers; they are not a cross-provider performance ranking.

How to find the cheapest H100 option for your workload

“Cheapest H100” has no universal answer because an H100 hour is only one part of the bill. A lower GPU rate can lose to a higher rate if the machine has slower storage, insufficient network bandwidth, expensive egress or poor utilization.

  1. Define the unit of work. For training, record time per optimizer step, global batch size and tokens processed. For inference, record requests per second, batch size, sequence length and latency target.
  2. Measure utilization. Separate wall-clock rental time from time the GPUs are doing useful work. Include data loading, checkpointing, evaluation, failed runs and idle periods.
  3. Compare complete machine bundles. Include CPU, RAM, local or network storage, attached volumes, snapshots, inter-zone traffic, public egress, support and orchestration.
  4. Benchmark two candidates. Run a representative training step or inference batch on each GPU type. The official material does not provide an apples-to-apples cross-provider tokens-per-second or samples-per-second benchmark, so your own workload measurement is the reliable comparison.
  5. Ask for the same placement. A single eight-GPU host and eight separate VMs are not equivalent for tensor, pipeline or data parallelism. Request the zone, host shape and interconnect used for the quote.
  6. Apply the commitment probability. Multiply the reserved hours by the probability you will actually use them. If that probability is low, on-demand capacity may have a lower expected cost even when its hourly price is higher.

Use this calculation for each candidate: total cost = GPU and host time + storage + network transfer and egress + management and support + idle or failed-run time. Keep one-time setup costs and recurring charges separate so a short experiment is not compared with a multi-year reservation on misleading terms.

Do you need a multi-GPU cluster?

One GPU is usually enough for

  • Model serving when the model, runtime memory and desired batch fit on one device.
  • Low-throughput or development inference where horizontal scaling is unnecessary.
  • Small fine-tuning jobs, preprocessing and experimentation.

A single GPU can still require a larger memory class if weights, activations, optimizer state or the longest request do not fit. Test the real maximum sequence length and batch rather than relying on parameter count alone.

Multiple GPUs are necessary when

  • The model or training state exceeds one GPU’s memory and must be sharded.
  • Training time must be reduced through data, tensor or pipeline parallelism.
  • Inference throughput requires replicas or batching beyond one device.
  • A deadline makes the cost of elapsed time more important than the cost of additional GPUs.

For multi-GPU training, topology can matter as much as GPU model. Confirm whether the required GPUs are on one host, in one zone and connected by the fabric expected by your framework. The number of GPUs alone does not establish scaling efficiency.

Interconnect, topology and placement checks

Before booking a cluster, document the communication pattern your software uses and ask the provider to map it to physical placement. Verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • GPU grouping: Are all devices on one host, or spread across hosts?
  • Network design: What bandwidth and latency are available between GPUs and between nodes? Ask for the tested configuration rather than a generic network maximum.
  • Placement guarantee: Will the reservation place every instance in one zone and keep the group available for the entire window?
  • Failure behavior: What happens if a host or network path fails, and can the job restart with the same topology?
  • Software path: Which drivers, CUDA versions, collectives libraries, container runtime and scheduler are supported?

A provider that cannot state the placement and recovery behavior cannot give you a dependable distributed-training estimate. Treat “up to” bandwidth, optional placement and unverified scaling as unknowns in the design.

Buying workflow: from model requirements to a reservation

  1. Write a workload sheet. Record model size, precision, maximum sequence length, batch size, optimizer, checkpoint size, expected training tokens, inference traffic, latency target and retention period.
  2. Estimate peak and average GPU-hours. Include retries, evaluation, checkpoints and time when only part of a cluster is active.
  3. Choose a memory floor. Eliminate GPU types that cannot hold the model or training state at the required batch and context length.
  4. Select a parallelism plan. Decide whether you need data, tensor, pipeline or hybrid parallelism, then translate it into a host count and placement requirement.
  5. Request quota and capacity. Check quota in the target region and whether all GPUs can be allocated in one zone. For AWS Capacity Blocks, check inventory and the allowed booking horizon before fixing your project date.
  6. Run a representative benchmark. Measure throughput, scaling efficiency, peak memory, checkpoint time and failure recovery on at least two candidates.
  7. Price the whole system. Add storage, snapshots, data movement, egress, management, support, licenses if applicable and expected idle time.
  8. Choose commitment length. Use on-demand capacity for uncertain demand, a scheduled block for a defined run, managed service for operational simplicity and a private cluster only for durable utilization and security needs.
  9. Recheck immediately before purchase. Provider catalogs, regional inventory, quota and prices change. Confirm the final machine shape, dates, cancellation rules and all recurring charges in the current quote.

Reservations: when are they worth it?

A reservation is valuable when the cost of missing a deadline or failing to assemble a cluster exceeds the cost of committing early. AWS Capacity Blocks are designed for this scheduled case: AWS says they can be reserved up to eight weeks ahead and run up to six months. The maximum published scale is 64 instances, equivalent to 512 GPUs or 1,024 Trainium chips, but your actual offer depends on the available instance family and region.

Use a simple decision test:

  • High utilization and fixed dates: reservation is more defensible.
  • Unknown dates or changing model design: on-demand is safer.
  • Need for software and operations support: compare managed-platform pricing, not only raw GPU rates.
  • Multi-year, high-utilization demand with strict isolation: evaluate a private cluster and its staffing and infrastructure costs.

Read the cancellation and modification language literally. A lower reserved rate does not compensate for hours you cannot use, a delayed dataset, a failed project or a region that no longer meets your residency requirement.

Storage, data movement and operations

Training often reads large datasets repeatedly and writes checkpoints that must survive instance replacement. Ask each provider:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  • Where datasets and checkpoints live, their durability guarantees and their read/write throughput.
  • Whether storage persists after the VM is stopped and how snapshots are charged.
  • How data moves from object storage to the GPUs and whether cross-zone or public transfer fees apply.
  • Whether egress is charged when results, checkpoints or a trained model leave the region.
  • How images, drivers, secrets, logs and monitoring are managed across the cluster.

For inference, include autoscaling behavior, cold-start time, minimum replica count and the cost of keeping standby GPUs warm. For training, include checkpoint frequency and restart time; an inexpensive GPU that loses hours of work after a failure can be more expensive in practice.

Security and data residency

Confirm the exact region, availability zone, tenancy model, encryption controls, identity integration, audit logs and deletion process. “Cloud” and “private” are not sufficient security descriptions. A managed platform may reduce operational burden but still require you to validate marketplace, region and support access. A private cluster can improve isolation while creating more responsibility for patching, physical access controls, incident response and hardware replacement.

Keep regulated or location-bound data in the approved geography, and verify where backups, support logs and telemetry are stored. Put the residency requirement in the purchase order so a later support or storage feature cannot silently move data.

Common failure modes and fixes

The requested GPUs cannot be allocated

Quota and physical inventory are separate constraints. Request quota early, check one-zone capacity and keep a technically acceptable fallback GPU or region. Do not assume a published machine family is available on your desired date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A distributed job scales poorly

Measure communication time, placement and checkpoint I/O. If GPUs are split across an unsuitable topology, reduce the node count, move to a colocated reservation or select a machine family with a supported fabric. A larger GPU count is not a substitute for adequate interconnect.

The hourly quote looks low but the project is expensive

Reconcile the invoice with storage, snapshots, egress, support, idle instances and failed jobs. Compare cost per completed training token or served request, not cost per GPU-hour.

The model does not fit despite having the advertised GPU

A practical decision matrix

Your situation Starting choice Why First verification
Early experimentation or irregular inference On-demand VM No long commitment and easy stop/start Quota, image, storage and total hourly bundle

Bottom line

Start with a measured workload, not a favorite provider. On-demand VMs are the safest default for uncertain demand; scheduled capacity is the practical answer for a deadline-bound distributed run; managed DGX Cloud is suited to teams buying operational simplicity; and a private cluster belongs only to organizations that can support a long, high-utilization commitment.
